Product Details

Pettit 1933 Copper Bronze is a general-purpose antifouling bottom paint for boaters looking for aggressive bottom protection in an easy to apply, attractive finish. This copper bottom paint is a hard, modified epoxy finish formulated to resist algae, barnacles, grass, zebra mussels, and other marine growth. The formula is effective in both freshwater and saltwater, and provides excellent protection for trailered boats.

Some settling may occur if the copper-based paint remains on the shelf for an extended period of time. Thorough shaking is required before use. If desired, thin up to 10% with Pettit 120 Brushing Thinner or Pettit 121 Spraying Thinner.

Use 1933 Copper Bronze boat bottom paint on bare fiberglass, bare wood, bare steel, previously painted surfaces, and lead, steel, or cast iron keels. NOT FOR USE ON ALUMINUM.

Sold in quart and gallon sizes.

Very thick and rough finish

Previous year the paint wasn't as thick and dried to a much smoother finish. Upon opening the container this year, about a third of the container had the consistency of playdo. I was able to stir it in but due to the thickness of it, I was not able to finish the bottom as I had previously been able to. The finish also dried much rougher than last year. I don't know if I got a bad can or if the product had changed. I would have contacted the company if I could have delayed my lift date. It performed well last year with 5 months in fresh water.

Hard Racing Bronze bottom paint.

Best finish for bottom paint on Woodies. Great for touch-ups. Fast drying and easy to sand. I usually thin with a little reducer because it is so thick. It seems like it's the only surviving brand out there--in todays' dollars, probably priced right. Too bad it's so expensive.

This is a Great company to do Business with, I will purchase from them again and their pricing is good and also shipping is as well. We live in a cold climate and can only do work in Spring/Fall and they are an ASSET to the Marine Business. Respectfully John N.H.

Nice color, does what it's supposed to do.

I've been using this product on my Cape Dory Typhoon for over 18 years. It has a nice copper color and works well for the four months I put the boat on a mooring in Minnesota waters. I always can reapply with minimal effort. More time sailing, less time working on the boat.

I would buy again. Delivery swift and trouble free.

I haven't used it yet, but the paint arrived just fine. A slight discoloration on part of the outside wrapper, but i don't see it affecting functionality. Not much choice for me as I have a wooden Lyman. It is either this or the Copper Bronze sold by Sandusky Paint in Sandusky, Ohio. That one is slightly darker. Since I already had the lighter Pettit product on my bottom, and I wanted this for touch up, there was not much issue what to use. Sandusky Paint told me to use the Pettit, but they were out of stock. They suggested Jamestown.

Q: What's the percentage of copper and how often does the boat have to be done? Is it yearly or does it last longer like Copper Coat?

1 Answer

A: Pettit doesn't list the percentage of copper, just that it is 49% solids. It is a hard paint and should last a couple years. Two coats are recommended.

Q: Can this paint be buffed to help blend in brush strokes and roller marks?

A: To date, I never experienced an issue with a Pettit CB 1933 application footprint. Prior to application, I mechanically stirred the product for an hour to attain a consistent blend. I applied the paint with both a brush and roller. Never attempted to buff the product - not necessary. Applied over sanded mahogany impregnated with Smith's CPES.

A: I really don't know but by the weight of the can it's a lot. I've used this on my chris crafts since the 60's. There might be better but I've never ventured a try. good luck
