Product Details

3M 4000 UV is a fast cure medium strength sealant used to bond and seal metal, gelcoat, fiberglass, wood, and plastic. A one-part polyether adhesive sealant with excellent UV resistance, 4000 cures to a firm, rubbery, watertight seal. This sealant is ideal for bonding deck hardware, hatches, portholes, railings, and navigation lights.

Suitable for use both above and below the waterline, 4000 Fast Cure is sometimes more appropriate than 3M 5200 polyurethane for parts that may never need removal or replacement. Available in White in various sizes.

this product works for me

I used this product on a boat project, I took an old boat 79, and rebuilt it, this product was very usefull in filling the multitude of holes that various owners had put in the boat, it worked very well for use with fasteners of different kinds,to seal them from leaking it covered well with paint. It is a bit messy to use and caution should be used when using it, to keep from getting it in places you do not want it. It cures quckly, and can be sanded to some extent, not recomended for a dent filler or anything like that.

Wrong quantity tube used in ad

An excellent, easy to use product. Jamestown should use the correct illustration for the 3 oz. tube. A 10 oz. cartridge is shown. Otherwise, an excellent product.

Website Ad Misleading

The website illustration is a 10 oz. cartridge suitable for a caulking gun - which I thought I was purchasing. In very small print it says that one is purchasing a 3 oz. tube. Very misleading and should be corrected.

Better for deck hardware than 4200

Tried both 4200 and 4000 for deck hardware/trim. 4000 stays white and is easier to clean up.

Q: I need to reattach teak rub rails with screws to my cabin sides can I run a bead of 4000uv between the painted wood hull to seal the rail and also us it to rebedd the screws.

A: Yes, it's the best caulk for the job. Even though it's UV resistant, you will see some cracking from the sun after a couple years, but it doesn't penetrate super deep into the caulk. There really is no avoiding cracking with any caulk, except with silicone (not recommended). Alternatively you could use butyl tape for that job. It will keep it waterproof but you will have to clean off grey streaks from time-to-time.

Q: so where can I find a application gun that is reasonable priced for the 3m products

1 Answer

A: Any good hardware store will sell a caulking gun that will work with these urethane caulks, but I'd recommend going to Amazon and buying a more bucks and you'll be able to also use it with epoxy cylinders that require more power.

A: 4000uv is paintable immediately after application - while wet or after it dries. It is not silicone based or silicone blend adhesive sealant.

A: The 4000 is UV resistant and will not yellow if left in the sun, easily removable, more so than 4200.

Q: Can 4000UV be coloured and if so by what? I prefer not to use a silicone base sealant on the boat. It is a plexiglass hatch cover to a teak frame sealed with CPES. I also do not think 5200 is a good option.

3 Answers

A: If you never ever what to remove someting, 5200 is your choice. Transducers, shaft skegs, bronze or stainless fittings it's the best. For everything else, I use 4200 or 4000UV. I never heard of being able to color them. You might want to shoot 3M a question. I would use clear silicon sealant for best results. Also, Jamestown has this info. See if it helps. < a href=__quote__http://www.jamestowndistributors.com/userportal/document.do?docId=510__quote__ target=__quote___blank__quote__>http://www.jamestowndistributors.com/userportal/document.do?docId=510< /a> Robert

Q: how well does this cure in cool weather, lower 40's?

A: I used this 3M product during warm weather so I don't know. I would imagine on the 3M website they would provide a range of temperatures for application. Good luck.
