Product Details

Fiberglass Mat, also known as Chopped Strand Mat or CSM for short, is a non-woven material typically used for laminate build-up and repair work. It consists of glass fibers laid randomly across each other and held together by a styrene binder.

For wetting out this form of glass fiber material, use a styrene thinned resin such as Polyester as it readily dissolves the styrene bonding agent that attaches the strands. This tooling cloth can be used with epoxy resin, but requires additional time and labor to saturate properly.

This fiberglass chopped strand mat is offered in various weights per square foot. The lightest version, veil mat, is used commonly as a finishing layer to mask any print-thru in a laminate schedule. This particular veil mat uses longer, thinner fibers than heavier mat weights also offered here. Coarser, heavier mat is commonly used for bulk, random axis strength buildup and is also an excellent initial layer when bonding repair work.

Relatively easy to work with, but did make a bit of a mess

This was my first time working with CSM, so hard to compare to other CSM products. It did what I wanted it to do in repairing and reinforcing a hull crack in a small sailboat. I'm not sure how strong the binders in this product are supposed to be, but I found that when I created a tear to shape the piece I needed, the frayed edges unraveled pretty easily, creating a lot of loose fiberglass strands in my workspace. Not the end of the world - just a bit messy. Overall, happy with the performance of this product.

Pretty straight forward material

This is my first time doing any type of fiberglass work on my boat. The CSM fibers end up coagulating together and make a mess. This might be a norm with fiberglass work but that's the only annoyance I found with it.

Works for me

I used this product to build up the space left after I removed the rotten wood in the repair of my trawler's door. I found this messy and difficult to work with mostly because I really don't know what I'm doing. The good news is in the end it does the job.
