Product Details

Fiberglass cloth is a woven material available in various sizes to allow custom strength, thickness, and weight in projects. This material features a plain weave pattern to provide great strength and durability when layered with resin to form a hardened composite. Our 6 oz fiberglass cloth is 3.9 mils thick.

Fiberglass fabric has many advantages: Greater tensile strength than steel wire of the same diameter; excellent fire and heat resistance; thermal conductivity (making it useful for insulation applications); and chemical resistance properties similar to glass. Durable and economical.

Ideal for boat repairs, waterproofing, electrical insulation, wet layup, and lamination. Available in 10 sizes, ranging from 38 inches x 1 yard up to 50 inches x 150 yards.

Strength

I wanted to add strength to my wooden boat as well as waterproof benefits of fiberglass. 6 oz fit the bill.

I would use this product again if I had a similar use.

I used the fiberglass cloth as a strong weather-proof exterior for a wooden bulkhead door. The cloth is thick enough to have significant strength and it wicks epoxy to saturation easily while letting bubbles out. When the excess epoxy is pressed out it makes a very strong bond. I also used the same materials once before to put a new surface on the pads that support our P-26 on the cradle. The pads were about 30 years old and were getting weathered and weak. I used to see new pads for sale but couldn't find a source. The repaired pads are now a bit thicker. The original laminated wood was saturated with penetrating epoxy first, and the new surface of fibergalss and epoxy applied (I think about 4 layers at alternate angles with all epoxy possible squeezed out with each layer and the layers cured between them). The final pads are stronger than new and will probably last longer than I will.

Managed to make it look good

I have ordered glass from Jamestown a few times usually great stuff. Only had a issue with a couple of snags in the mesh this time inside the roll. Was able to hide them for the most part. They were about half way into the 10 yard roll and I had already used the first half on the outside of a canoe so figured I couldn't return the rest. Like I said I was able to hide them foe the most part.

Rolled then folded

Ordered Fiberglass for a Cederstrip Canoe project. Description listed ""rolled"" and it was if fact rolled however the roll was folded twice to fit in a shipping box. I was hopeful the crease marks from the folds would roll out in the project however they did not and folds are visible on the final canoe. Lesson learned.

Though I haven't yet used the fiberglass cloth working as an insulator in my new strip heater it is exactly what I needed to protect he wood base against the 280 F heater.

Nice cloth but read the description carefully!

This is the first time ordering cloth from Jamestown. I've ordered cloth other places, sold by the yard. Other places if you wanted 12 yards I'd just order 12 units and would get one 12 yard long piece. With this order I received 12 separate 1 yard packages, each separately packaged. I guess I should have looked at the description more closely or perhaps it should have been more descriptive. I wonder who would order 12 separate 1 yard packages and perhaps Jamestown should have questioned it.

Invisible

I was looking for a light cloth to cover seating repaired with 1/4"" plywood and this material worked great. It totally disappeared in the resin and provided the light support I needed. I would recommend using the electric shears. I'm not experienced with fiberglass and used scissors. Some parts of the cloth got distorted while cutting. I think the electric shears would make a cleaner cut without as much distortion.

Q: Hello. I am interested in buying 25 yards of 6oz - 50 inch fiberglass cloth and I have several questions: - Is it really 3.9 mils thick? most cloths I've seen are in the range of 7 - 8 mils thick. - What is the thread count (or warp / fill)? - Does this cloth provide equal strength vertically and horizontally? - If I order 25 yards, will this come in one single roll? I appreciate your assistance.

1 Answer

A: Thanks for bringing this to my attention. The thickness is .010"", or 10 mil. Sorry, I don't have thread count information. It has the same strength vertically as horizontally. On rare occasions, you might get a package with two pieces instead of one piece. You can specify that you need one continuous piece when you place your order.

Q: can i use polyester resin with 420 cloth

1 Answer

A: Yes. You can use polyester resin with any fiberglass cloth or chopped-strand mat (CSM). You should not, however, use epoxy resin with standard CSM, as the strands are bound together with an adhesive that relies on being dissolved by the styrene in polyester resin. Wise of you to have asked. I learned the hard way!

A: It depends on the size, some of the smaller sizes are prepackaged in a bag while the larger sizes are on a roll. Please contact us at info@jamestowndistributors.com with the size you are looking at and we can confirm this for you.

Q: Hello there, I was wondering if this cloth works for neon tube benders? I work for an electric sign company and the product we use to use is no longer available or I am unable to locate it. It says fiberglass cloth is fire retardant so I just wanted to know your thoughts on it.

1 Answer

A: Sorry but I really don't know enough about your application to advise you on it. Perhaps if you call the Support Center and describe what you need, one of the JD techs may be able to help.

Q: I am a glassblower and I use the fiberglass sheeting I purchased from you for breaking off my glass before I put into my annealing oven. The glass is still around 1200*F at that point. So its great stuff for this kind of application. A couple of years ago I purchased some 10oz sheeting of fiberglass from you stock #1551, fib505. Is the 6oz lighter in weight? I now have the 10oz fiberglass. Do you have anything heavier and possibly thicker?
