Product Details

TotalBoat Polyester Laminating Resin is used as a first coat for base coat applications. Without wax, this resin remains tacky to hold fiberglass fabric in place on vertical surfaces. Needs no sanding between coats. Laminating resin is excellent for saturating fiberglass fabrics. MEKP (methyl ethyl ketone peroxide) catalyst included.

Available in Quart, Gallon, and 2-Gallon Kits.

Well worth it

Started restoring a 1974 Wellcraft and went with another option for polyester resin to save a buck. During the project I really struggled with this cheaper product. Even ended up throwing away a 5 gallon drum because it had started to crystalize from sitting too long. Ordered the Total Boat product and will NEVER use anything else. This is a superior product!

I used this in covering the new ply laid in on my floor. It became easier as I learned how to mix it with the hardener and mixing the right amount for the time I had to work it. I never mixed more than 8 ozs.

Great for old sailboats

Used this resin on my old sailboats' interior and exterior. Since polyester resin was used to build the boat, it works great. Use protective clothing and a mask. It has strong fumes. I followed Andys' suggestions at Boatworks Today when I applied it.

I'm not a professional at working with fiberglass but I have learned enough to know that quality resins and glass makes any job easier. I have tried a lot of different types of resins in the past most driven by cheaper prices. For the money total boat resin is the best I have found.

Laminating resin didn't remain tacky

I have used JD products extensively in the past and all have surpassed expectations. This gallon of laminating resin, however, turned rock-hard/solid after about 12 hours. I followed the activator (MEKP I think) instructions to the letter...exact number of drops per oz, and the temps were around 70F. I have used JD resin, West Marine resin, Bondo resin, etc so I'm very familiar with finish resin, laminating resin, etc and application. Two stars because, as a finish resin, the product would have worked great, but this was supposed to be a laminating resin. I was able to sand up the final 'lamination' (now really hard), and zero resin transferred to the sandpaper...generally laminating resin will gum up coarse grit sandpaper. I'm speculating this was just a batch or lot of resin that was mis-labeled as laminating resin, but was actually finish resin. I contacted JD and they offered to send over a replacement gallon of laminating resin which was great, but I declined, as I was able to make the 'laminating' resin work by coarse sanding it to prep for the finish layers. I will buy from JD in the future, but just be cautious if you leave the final 'laminating resin' layer overnight to finish with a 'finishing resin' coat that the 'laminating resin' may be 'finish resin' and require a coarse sanding.

Total boat Poly resin

I'm giving it 5 stars because ive never had an issue with this resin, also i am not a professional in fiberglass boat repair or fiberglass in general. i cannot compare it to other resins on the market because this is the only one ive ever used. i believe the price point is fair, quality seems to be very good, i have no complaints about the resin. ive almost exclusively used it in cooler temps with no problems. as for JD, customer service is great, shipping is great. cant complain and will continue to purchase their products.

Update on Basic Directions

I wrote a review this AM after doing a ruinous wet layup. I repeated what I had read in the reviews stating what the gradients on the pipette meant. I was wrong as was whomever wrote the other review. I performed an experiment and found that a teaspoon is about 180 drops from the pipette. Thus, I thought the other gentleman must have been using an eye dropper or something with a larger orifice than the provided pipette. The ""1"" gradient on the pipette is around 40 drops. Do the math - go from there.

This had excellent flow and mixed well. This was much better than a popular brand I bought at the auto supply store. It can be tricky to measure properly. The first gallon I purchased did not come in a kit, and I ran out of hardener, possibly due to measuring difficulties. The droppers included in the kits made this much simpler and more accurate.

I'm leary about ordering product from you again.

When I got the product it was the wrong color. The laminating resin is amber and this was blue finishing resin. I ordered the laminating resin. The shipper tore the label off of a finishing gallon jug and replaced it with a label from a gallon of laminating resin. I sent the product back and received a credit to my credit card very promptly. I explained the situation to Hillery but I don't think it went any further, I never heard back from anyone.

very disapointing

Completely unsuitable for applications requiring strength and durability. Purchased the product for fiberglass work on the underside of a deck. Selected the product based on 5 star ratings from previous reviewers but very disappointed with the results. Areas being repaired were below a winch station and other deck hardware on a sailboat; where water had penetrated and rotted the balsa core. These repairs required a high strength product. The repair areas ranged from 36sq-in to 3sq-ft. The first attempt at re-fiberglassing, after replacing the balsa core, was unsuccessful. The wet resin had very low tack and would not hold the fiberglass in place when wetted out on the repair surface. Tried wetting the fiberglass on a bench first, then applied the fiberglass to the repair with a roller, held it in place with a board, and used a sponge underneath to conform to the repair surface and provide distributed compression. The result was very poor - large areas with micro air bubbles and partially bonded fiberglass strands. The fiberglass layers had poor adhesive strength and were easily removed. Subsequent attempts were conducted by vacuum bagging. These repairs, although providing an improved result, still exhibited substandard bond strength: the fiberglass sheets de-bonded easily and on one repair the shear force exerted by a screw driven into the surface caused it crumble; on a repair with 6 fiberglass layers two days after it had cured. I can't know whether other reviews of this product giving five stars are genuine, but if they are it shows great variability in product quality control. The resin I purchased was blue, other reviews, and the JD picture indicate pink, this alone raises suspicion on product quality control. Based on my experience I will never again purchase a Total Boat product; the suspicion being that the entire product line is substandard with poor quality control. I've also lost respect for Jamestown Distributors, as a supplier of quality boat products given their adoption and intense promotion of Total Boat; where quality control or product inferiority would appear to be an issue.

batches differ

The first few gallons I ordered cam in a blue color. The blue batch gelled and cured out in the time specified on the container label. The last few orders I received poly in a pink color. This pink batch took twice the catalyst to get the same gel time. And it took a good 18 hours to cure out. My advice, mix a test batch when you receive a new order of poly. Depending on the age of poly and the batch, it does not always react to the catalyst consistently.

FOR A FIRST-TIMER IT MADE MY JOB EASY!

This was my first time fiberglassing. I own a Formula 242LS and have been using the swim platform as the support for a 150 quart live baitwell. Needless to say I would have found the baitwell and swim platform 30' under if I hadn't been proactive! The resin went on like a breeze, hardened like a rock with plenty of time to message and is now bullet proof! I wish I had taken before and after pictures! THERE WON'T BE A NEXT TIME! Note: I can't take ALL the credit! Chet helped me. Actually, he did a lot! BUT, he was 100% satisfied as to the ease of application and final results! Thanks Chet, I owe you dinner!!

Q: I am doing a 2"" build -up on my swim platform to install hydraulic lift. 1st i need to stick it to the existing fiberglass what to use between the existing fiberglass and the new plywood? I am using (2) layers of 1/2""marine plywood (1) 1/2"" thick aluminum (1) 1/2' marine plywood 2"" total. I was going to bolt all (4) pieces together then laminate to existing fiberglass platform this is on the bottom side of the platform, so it's not seen when in the water. It will be submerged when lowered. The piece I am adding is 8"" wide x 36"" long x 2"" thick. Should I laminate between each layer? I would like to have the aluminum. plate be the last layer can I laminate over that?

Q: I am using this product to replace the stringers in a 22' Center console. I plan on recoating the bilge area of the boat with resin when filleting, then painting the bilge with bilge paint. I am not looking for a superior finish just a durable easy to maintain surface. Can I save time and work by skipping the sanding step or is sanding required before painting over this resin? Same question for this product with wax.

Q: What do i add to polyester laminating resin to make it harden tackfree?

1 Answer

A: You can add Flywax to laminating resin (it's in the dropdown menu on the TotalBoat gelcoat page). You can overcoat it with Evercoat PVA. You can cover it with PeelPly then remove the fabric after the resin cures. You can also apply finishing resin or gelcoat with wax over the top to get a hard finish. You will find complete instructions at this link on the website: https://doc.jamestowndistributors.com/userportal/pdfs/TotalBoat/totalboat-polyester-resins-all-tds-10.28.21.pdf

Q: Replacing a transom with Coosa, (2) layers of 3/4 Bluewater26. My thought was to laminate the two layers using PE resin and CSM between the Coosa. Should I be using a laminating or finishing resin for the bonding of the two Coosa layers? If using laminating resin is there an issue with getting a full cure, since no wax, gel coat, or PVA would be used?

A: The laminating resin will cure when it is sealed in by the outer layers of fiberglass, resin and gelcoat.

Q: I am using your polyester resin on a CC that I am building. My question is I was thinking about using it to lay carbon fiber on my gauge panel as it appears to be UV stable (Non-Yellowing) and clear. Would this work or am I off base here?

1 Answer

A: Laminating resin has an amber tint to it. You will get better results if you laminate the carbon fiber with TotalBoat High Performance Epoxy overcoated with TotalBoat Envy 2-part Clear Varnish. Check out this video demonstrating a carbon fiber lamination: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTGMdbejtbM They used 5:1 epoxy but the 2:1 will give you a clearer finish.

Q: iS THIS THE BEST PRODUCT TO AAPLY TO PLYWPPD BEFORE ADDING A LAYER OF FIBERGLASS MATERIAL AND FURTHER, IS IT TE BEST TO COVER OVER OR SATURATE THE SUCCESSIVE LAYERS OF FIBERGLASS CLOTH?

3 Answers

A: Depends on what you are trying to accomplish.  A patch or a whole boat?  If used I suggest a layer or  2 of mat before using cloth as a finish coat.  For small projects I use the West system. There are multiple pubs covering either system.  Perhaps Jamestown Dist has some in the back issues or try u tube.

Q: Hello, I purchased a quart of your laminating resin a year ago and was never able to use it because of family business. The can was never opened and I was wondering if the product is still good to use?

1 Answer

A: If the resin is completely fluid with no lumps, then it's still good to use.  If it has lumps with a thick, rubber-like consistency or if there are solid pieces in the resin, then it's no good. Bob

Q: Can I use polyester resin on a strip canoe I am building?

6 Answers

A: Our company makes color dispersions for polyester, epoxy, polyols (urethanes), acrylics, alkyds, etc.so we are familiar with the chemistry. I also build strip boats and have experimented extensively with these different finishes in regard to outdoor durability. That includes the addition of hindered amines (HALS), benzotriazole and benzophenone UV inhibitors. Acrylic is the best polymer for outdoors, Polyester is second, 2 part urethanes 3rd and epoxy doesn't last 2 years in the sun. However, when it comes to physical properties such as impact, tensile and elongation, epoxy is best, then polyester, urethane and acrylic (brittle in coatings and difficult to handle). If you are going over wood wet out the glass with epoxy and apply a better UV stable coating such as polyester or urethane over the epoxy. You can also use an alkyd based or spar varnish with UV absorber, usually benzotriazole such as BASF Tinuvin 329 or 400 @ .5%. Chemists have made huge advances in the last 20-50 years in improving the durability of these coatings. These polymers are compatible so watch for and experiment with blends of epoxy, urethane, polyester & acrylic. Don't discount the water based products either. We have used water based epoxy on concrete floors that is almost as good as the bis-a & amine, and WB acrylics that are lasting on wood outdoors for 5 years. Unfortunately liability in our litigious society keeps many of the technical advances from public consumption. Monomers such as PMMA (acrylic), styrene (in polyester) and isocyanate in urethane are nasty and require special handling. Epoxy is relatively safe although some people do react to the amine catalysts.
