Gelcoat No wax

Only thing I didn't care for was the gel coat is to thick to use in a gelcoat gun. Brush it on or roll it on it's probably OK but its to thick to spray on.

New to fiberglass and boat repair, I had no idea what I was doing. The Gelcoat worked better than I had imagined and the repair turned out better than I thought it woruld. The next time I have to do some repairs, I will probably re-surface the entire boat.

First time using gelcoat, good results.

Final topcoat product. I did not know this when I bought it, so after first application I sanded it down to get a good bonding surface for the gelcoat without wax, and put on 3 layers. Final coat was the gelcoat with wax. Since my objective was to protect the bottom of a kayak and learn about fiberglass and gelcoats for the future I sanded the areas above the waterline smooth and left the heavier bottom with brush strokes.

You need to know what you are doing before doing it!

The product is good, the guidance is poor. I have a PWC (Seadoo) that needed its bottom restored. I decided it needed new gelcoat. After watching several YouTube clips on how to apply and finish gelcoat I decided I could do this. I have experience spraying cars and trucks. I spoke with the sale lady and explained I needed to cover about 30 square feet with black gelcoat. She explained the prep steps, how to roll on the gelcoat and how to sand it down before applying the second or third coats. The sanding was necessary because she sold me a gallon of gelcoat with wax. I thought a gallon was overkill based on auto painting but I assumed she knew what she was doing. Also, rolling is a bad idea because it leaves it not with orange peal but grapefruit peal and it takes forever to sand it down due to the various contours of the surface. I could use my mechanical sanders on about half of the hull. After the first rolled coat I sprayed the next coats with great success. It does not level well and still needs sanding but nothing like the roller. Later when I asked why she didn't recommend the first coats using gelcoat without wax she explained that they didn't sell black gelcoat without wax and assumed I could sand it down for the subsequent coats. She should have warned me that would be really hard. After 10 minutes to spray a coat it took a couple days to sand it down for the next coat or for the finish polishing. In the end, the bottom came out looking almost new but it took 10 times longer to do than I expected. My recommendation: If you need multiple coats then do the undercoats without wax then finish off with wax. Furthermore, she sold me a whole gallon and I only used a little over a quart. Anyone want some black gelcoat with wax?

I use this to repair my boat. End product looks good. More on what I wonder. The first quart works fine. I don't use it all at once, but rather a little bit at a time. By the end of the quart, the gel coat get a little more concentrated, still works fine. This was in hot summer. On the second quart I ordered in the cold weather, the first batch is fine. Second batch get a lot more concentrated only roughly 2 weeks after the first time opened.

Works very well. I mixed too much (12 oz) the first batch and it hardened before I could finish rolling it out. After that I stuck to 6 oz batches & a few drops less of hardener.

Good product and there is a difference

I've been working on a particularly difficult kayak repair in fiberglas. Its difficult because none of the surfaces are flat and all are curved, bending, tilted, etc. I've used and removed three different gelcoats before arriving at Total Boat gel coat, neutral. With a bit of tint we got close to the original, the application was by brush and the product thick enough to avoid pooling and running. Good stuff. Just reordered.

I dented my swim platform and after filling and fairing it was time for Gelcoat. This product sticks and stays to an almost vertical surface. Dries hard and sands with wet dry sandpaper to a smooth finish. Matching the color is the hardest part.

Again this was my first fiberglass job. It turned out fine

My only regret was ordering paint with the wax mixed in the paint. The first coat didn't go on thick enough. Because the paint had wax in it I had to sand it with 80 grade, de wax and paint again. It all turned out well in the end. I could have saved time by using untaxed for the first coat and added wax in for the second.

Worked great with thickener for nonskid

I used it in the bottom of a bathtub that had worn areas and it worked great. I thickened it with silica powder and used a short nap roller. Masking neatly and removing the masking tape while still wet is important. I had to add some color to match. I have used this on boat decks before.

I used the white Gelcoat to cover some exposed fiberglass. The Gelcoat went on easy with a foam roller and a brush. I feel the results were smother with a brush but both required a little sanding to make fully smooth. Over all great product, easy to use, and great results.

First, the packing and shipping of the Total Boat products is great--well packed and shipped quickly. The Gelcoat goes on easy and smooths out very well. I was forced to apply in less than ideal temps ( 47-55 degrees) and it cured out fine--a bit slower on the shady side.

Happy with this Gelcoat

This is a nice bright white gelcoat. I have applied it with brush, roller, and preval Disposable spray when repairing various cracks, holes and breaks in our youth sailing fleet of boats- happy with the gelcoat! I'm not a pro - here's a pic of a C420 bow that rammed the dock head-on one too many times... glassed with JD Polyester laminating resin and topped using JD Gelcoat right out of the can -without and coloring agents... please judge the gelcoat ...not my repair job :)

Good product. Not as intimidating as you would think.

I used the total boat poly laminating resin and glassed in a block to mount an anchor winch. Poly resin does not cure by itself. I used the gel coat with wax as a final layer. Keeping in mind I live in Tulsa Ok and it is summer here. That said I used a bit less mekp than it called for (about 3 drops less per oz). I put down two coats lightly sanding between and had absolutely no issues. I also used the liquid tint and was able to color match and fade with no problems using a foam hotdog roller. This was my first time working with fiberglass and gel coat. Seeing as it's pretty easy to work with. I'll do the interior of the boat next. My suggestion. Read the instructions. It clearly states X amount of drops per oz at X temp. Adjust accordingly and make sure the surface is correctly prepped.

Q: null Can I use TotalBoat Gelcoat with Wax (white) over plastic and epoxy? I had a ""professional"" re-coat the bottom of a plastic/poly Delta shower and tub insert. I believe he used a roll-on epoxy or gelcoat application to resurface the bottom of the tub and shower. Over the years it's started flaking off hard chips of paint. I assume I need to sand the surface completely and prep accordingly. I purchased the gelcoat with wax. I realize now the wax version should be the final coat but I'm wondering if I can sand between coats if multiple coats are needed. ... or do I need to go a different direction? I've watched a lot of videos about using gelcoat for tub resurfacing but nothing specifically regarding gelcoat over plastic.

A: Hi Brady. Neither epoxy nor plastic are suitable substrates for gelcoat. Plastic is a difficult material to coat in general, but if you'd like our best detailed recommendations for this project, please give us a call at 800-497-0010 or send us an email at info@totalboat.com.

A: If you sand it well you can overcoat your old gelcoat with new gelcoat to restore the shine. It will have to be wet sanded and buffed after applying the gelcoat. Q: null I'm planning on refinishing the cockpit of my Maritime Skiff with Total Boat Gelcoat with wax. Is there an additive that can be used to ""flatten"" the finish for the sole of the boat. Gloss up the sides and deck area will be fine but I'd rather have a semi-gloss or matte for the floor. Thanks in advance for your assistance, Jay

A: If you just wet sand with 400 grit that will give you a flat finish without polishing it out.

Q: null I have a 2004 Compac Eclipse sloop that it needs a bunch of gelcoat repair...deep scratches/cracks. Aside from sanding, what products would you recommend for this repair? Is TotalBoat gelcoat w/wax the right product for the job? Anything else I would need? Since the gelcoat color is beige/cream, what can I use to achieve the proper match?

1 Answer

A: Hello, thanks for reaching out. If the cracks are wider than a hair, I would recommend using a Dremel to open them up, then fill it with our Polyester Structural Repair Putty. If the cracks are less than a hair wide, you could use our Polyester Fairing Compound, then go over the top with gelcoat. We sell Pigments that can be added to gelcoats to achieve the right color. Q: null I thinned 4 oz of totalboat white gelcoat (with wax) with 15% styrene, then added 10 drops of MEKP per oz of gelcoat (40 drops). (I thinned it to spray it with a Preval sprayer, but the sprayer didn't work very well, so I ended up brushing it on. And I only added 10 drops/oz of MEKP because I wanted a longer working time.) It's been 24 hours and the gelcoat has not cured. It's still sticky and will come off on my finger tips. I'm in Beaufort, SC and the average temp has been 70*F (80 in the day, 60 at night). Will it eventually cure or do I need to remove it and start over? If I need to remove it, what do I remove it with? Thanks.

1 Answer

A: Hello, Unfortunately, If the gelcoat has not cured, it probably isn't going to. When gelcoat isn't catalyzed or mixed properly this can happen. This can also happen if the surface isn't compatible. What are you coating over? Zackary Hovey-Cook Total Support Tech (800) 497-0010 Ask for Zack
