Product Details

Mix TotalBoat 2-Part Polyurethane Flotation Foam in equal parts and pour in place to soundproof, insulate, provide buoyancy, and even create art. Pourable foam has 94% closed-cell structure to resist absorbing water, and is unaffected by gas or oil. Available in 2 lb & 6 lb density.

2 pound density foam is great for filling voids in non-structural applications. Can be poured beneath decks and inside cavities to provide buoyancy, and has a flotation range of 75 lbs/qt and 300 lbs/gal.

6 pound density foam has higher compressive strength, ideal for filling cavities to support heavy loads. Its smaller cell structure makes it a popular choice for uses ranging from buoys to sculptures. Its flotation range is 23 lbs/qt and 92 lbs/gal.

Both have been tested in accordance with U.S. Coast Guard Regulation # 33 CFR 183.114.

2-Part Polyurethane Flotation Foam Specifications:
  • The lightweight, 2 lb. density foam is commonly used for filling voids, filling under decks, and practically any other flotation or insulation application.
  • 6 lb. density foam is used for architectural castings, support applications, and has virtually an unlimited number of potential uses.
  • The densities shown refer to the weight per cubic foot of expanded foam (12 in. x 12 in. x 12 in.)
  • 2 lb. density foam expansion: One 2-Quart Kit expands to approximately 2 cubic ft.; one 2-Gallon Kit expands to approximately 8 cubic ft.
  • 6 lb. density foam expansion: One 2-Quart Kit expands to approximately 3/4 cubic ft.; one 2-Gallon Kit expands to approximately 3 cubic ft.
  • All expansion rates and times given are temperature critical. Temperatures below 75 degrees F will lower the expansion rate, which will require more foam. The ideal working temperature is 75 to 80 degrees F, or higher.
  • Accurate measuring of these products is extremely critical.
  • Once fully cured, either foam can be laminated over with any type of polyester, epoxy, or vinyl ester resin without melting. Polyurethane foam is compatible with both epoxy and polyester resin systems.
  • This product can be poured in multiple layers, with excellent bonding between layers.
  • Working time before foaming: Approximately 45 seconds (2 lb. density) to 65 seconds (6 lb. density).
  • Time before full expansion: Approximately 5 minutes

Works great! Just make sure you have a lot of gloves, stir sticks and quart containers. wear old clothes and prepare to make a mess. Works great and take your time. The more holes the better.

i have used this product twice. no problems with shipping or damaged cans. have not had any cans explode endlessly. my reason for picking totalboat over other brands i had bookmarked is because totalboat 2lb flotation foam actually has the capability of carrying more weight per cubic foot than other brands. plus all products coming from jamestown come from craftsmen,builders,shipwrights and other boat lovers not just a company that sells foam and epoxy and such. the first time i used the foam was at 90 deg and the second time was around 60+deg didnt seem to matter, it still blew and covered bout same area. ( what would be great if it came in a divided tube with a mix nozzle or just a blank caulk tube to get to certain places you cant pour) but will being buying more and other products til im done with my boat. thank you jamestown. 1977 glastron t152 trihull

I filled in the gap between the hull and the cockpit floor thru 1.5 in. Holes I drilled thru the defective balsa sandwich floor. Than i sanded the floor level and epoxied in a 0.5 in. Coosa board to make the new solid cockpit floor.

Used 2, 2 gallon kits 2lb foam & got only 5 cubic feet worth

I followed the instructions to a T as far as I can tell. The second time I bought this Total Boat foam for the same pour I even got the temperature just above 80 instead of over 75 as i did on the first pour. With my calculations 2, 2 gallon kits of 2lb only yielded about 5 cubic feet total (that's only about 2.5 cubic feet per 2 gallon kit). Am I confused with what the total yield should be? Is it actually supposed to yield just over 2 feet cubed or 8 feet cubed? I've seen many videos of even higher density foam expanding more than this stuff did. This was in the center of a room and i made sure everything got up to proper temp before the pour. The room was near 70 all day before i got it up to 80 and waited about 30 minutes after to proceed. What am i missing? i also stirred heavy with a mixer for 25 - 30 seconds before immediately pouring and the foam was evenly colored. Confused...

Read the directions and have everything ready to go. I found that while mixing the two parts together quickly and counting to 25 the mixture abruptly turns clear, pour the liquid into the void and watch the magic happen. From the video I thought I would get more volume from the foam. I calculated the cubic inches to be filled and came up short. To complete the job I used a second set to make up the difference.

I used it for under seat and bow and stern floatation materials in a Cap Dory homebrew. The material, of course is free form whereas the places you want to put it are structural. My point is, that a great deal of planning needs to go into the installation before committing to pouring the compound.

Fantastic product that delivers more than it promises.

This expanding closed cell foam product delivers what it promises. I think they under state the strength a bit because I found the surface to be easily rigid enough to act as a floor for light weight items like sails and lifevests. I did make one goof up and that was to allow the cans to get a bit warmer than they should ant that accelerated the expanding foam reaction to the point I had to move very quickly after mixing. It started reacting almost immediately, so abide by their guidelines. Make sure you mix right next to where you plan to pour and drape things well. Basically I think the stuff is fantastic.

I used one quart mixing cups. I put equal amounts that totaled just under a quart stirred and poured in holes in the floor. It was about fifty degrees outside but about seventy inside a heated shop so it didn't kick off real fast and gave me a little time to pour scrape the cup good so I didn't have much waste.

I used this product to fill flotation tanks of a sailboat. Instead of pouring the mixture directly into the chamber, I first lined it with a plastic drop cloth as I did not want to foam to adhere directly to the wooden boat structure. I want the flotation foam to be removable so that I can (at some point) paint or clean the inside walls of the tank. After the foam has cured, the plastic can easily be peeled off. I made smaller successive batches, each one fitting into the contour of the previous batch and easily removable. It's been working very well.

Easy to use and very effective. Just make sure to pour it before it starts to expand (about 30-40 seconds). It can be messy. So, plan ahead and have everything, including stir stick and something to clean any drips ready ahead of time.

I pour totally 4lbs into the bow and stern of my sit inside kayak (Perception sound 10.5). I test the kayak a week later on the near by reservoir by filling up the kayak with water. The kayak float!!! I bought the first 2lbs from James Town distributor. The packaging was poor. Both metal cans have missing seals. The liquid leak out.Even though the metal cans is in a plastic bag. But it is messy.So, the second 2lbs I orderer from US composite. The packaging is very nice. No messy liquid leaking all over the plastic bag.

I used it to replace the under-seat flotation in an old aluminum boat. Did a great job. Filled the voids effectively and solidly. But since the foam sticks securely to whatever it touches, there was some scraping and clean-up necessary.

I had to put a new tube in my boat for all the rigging on the inside of the hull. This stuff worked perfectly. Prepare for a HUGE mess. It is also very sticky until it dries. I spilled some on the carpet in the boat and it pulled the carpet up when I was trying to clean it off. Not a big deal as I am recarpetting the boat anyway. I have a tip for using this in confined areas. The area I was working in was small and I had to get it full all the way into the back. What I did was mix up a batch and pour it into a 1.5"" PVC pipe with a wad of paper towel to plug one end. Then I stuck it into the area I was working on and pushed the foam out with a stick. Sorta like a giant syringe. Worked Great and turned out great.

I invented the innovative new I.T.S.U. Wave Master Kayak/SUP Hybrid for River Masters of Oregon. We fill our kayak/sup with this foam to guarantee flotation over many years of normal use. Normal use in Kayaking terms includes: extreme whitewater, UV exposure, standing water in voids when bilge is not emptied and salt water conditions as well as river water. Pour in place foam is great for boat flotation when restoring waterlogged foam. It expands quickly and is relatively easy to work. Expansion is sometimmes hard to contain. I just let it grow and then cut off the excess. Work quickly after getting prepared ( especially in warm weather).

Product was great! The package was dented bad and was not properly packaged. Jamestown also added a $16.00 charge for handling that was not in the final price when I checked out (beware) I will not order from this place again. But the product worked as sold.

Q: null Hello. I have a small sailboat similar to a Sunfish that is water logged and weighs a few hundred pounds. I am considering cutting most of the fiberglass deck off and digging out any foam, filling it with your expanding foam and reattaching or refiberglassing the deck back in position. My question is how will this foam stand up to epoxy in repairing the deck? Thanks.

A: You can epoxy over the foam. Commonly boats of that type are not totally filled with foam. They may just have foam blocks glued inside the hull. Before you cut off the deck you may want to drill a drain hole in the transom to see if water can be drained out.

Q: null I have a 14 foot fiberglass sailboat with a double hull, that has about 4' of space at the centerboard and tapers down to about 2"" of space at the transom. The beam is 6 feet. I have two questions regarding your 2 pound density flotation foam: Is filling this cavity an appropriate use for the 2 pound product? If some water leaks into the cavity (most eventually have small leaks) what are the consequences of that happening. Approximately how much product do you suggest I order to fill the cavity? A: It might be suitable but more info is needed. Might be worth reaching out to the builder, class association, or online owners group. The foam is closed cell so it should not absorb water. Q: null how easy is the 6lb density foam to cut and sand compared to the 2lb density foam I plan to use it to make a buck/plug to make a mold off of. The 2lb foam is very porous and I was thinking that the 6lb density foam would be less porous. Less filling and sanding to get the surface smooth

A: You are correct. That's why it is commonly used for surfboards. However, it does not expand as much as the 2lb foam so you need three 6lb kits to fill the same space as one 2lb kit.

Q: null Hi I have a 1992 four winn's 180 freedom I am doing the hole bottom of the boat new floor and stringers and foam my question is what type of foam do I put back in 2lb or 4lb or 6lb. I have all of it out and I am putting back the stringers and bulk heads right now so I have time to get the foam to do it right. thank you for any information on this.

A: The boat probably had 2lb foam in it when it was built. It is your best option as it fills more space than the equivalent sized 6lb foam and it weighs less.

Q: null I have a Laser sailboat. The standard flotation is a number of ""cubitainers"" which are just poly air bottles. Mine are missing or damaged. I was thinking of using pour-in foam, since the boat has several hull ports in the deck and footwell which would facilitate the foaming. My concern is waterlogging. The boat will be kept out of the water except when in use. Seems like a good idea, but once done, kinda hard to undo. Am I concerned for no reason? And before someone mentions racing rules, I don't plan to ever sail it in anything other than local regattas.

A: A laser only weighs @ 130 lbs, That means, you only need a little over 2 cubic feet of foam to displace enough water to keep the boat from sinking. My guess is the goal of the cubitainers is to save weight. Foam filling the same space will weigh a bit more. Even though the foam is closed cell it can gradually take on some water over the course of many years, adding some additional weight.

A: The R-value for TotalBoat Polyurethane Flotation Foam is 6.5-6.6 for 2-pound foam, and 5.0-5.5 for 6-pound foam. The R-value is a measure of a material's ability to insulate, or slow the rate of heat flow. These values are based on 1"" of fully cured foam. The R-value for each foam can be multiplied by the thickness of the foam (in inches) to determine a specific application's R-value.

A: I'd like to argue one point here. While buoyancy is defined at the amount of water displaced by the volume, the amount of buoyancy left ""to use"" is reduced by its weight. So if a volume of air displaces 10 lbs of water, you have 10 pounds to use, but if the weight of the foam for the same volume is 2 lbs you have 8 left over, and 6 lbs of foam leaves you with 4 pounds of remaining buoyancy. Having said that the 6 pound formulation is much more dense so should provide a stronger construction. I don't claim any knowlege about the engineering of a Boston Whaler's hull however.
