Product Details

To be used with AwlGrip and AwlCraft 2000 Topcoat Boat Paints to give a Non-Skid texture for deck and step areas. Anti-Slip and non-skid additives are mixed directly with topcoats, or added to a "tacky" paint surface. People have had success adding these polymeric particles to varnishes (actually 2-part clear polyurethanes), as well as other similar multi-part polyurethane boat paint finishes. Griptex is available in fine, coarse and extra coarse, letting you customize grip or traction levels.

Info & Guides
Mixing and Reduction For spray application, add 4 oz/113.4 grams by weight of Griptex non-skid additive to each gallon of mixed color base and converter.

Application Instructions Griptex particles may be added to mixed topcoats and applied by spray. Dry particles may be broadcast or sprinkled into a tacky paint film. Do not apply to surfaces warmer than 105 F or colder than 55 F. Do not attempt to cure below 55 F (13 C).

Cautions Previously painted surfaces must be tested for compatability before applying Awlgrip products. Gelcoat non-skid areas need to be thoroughly cleaned abraded. Use Scotch-brite, water, abrasive cleaners, and stiff brushes to ensure proper cleaning. For final removal of abrasive residues and sanding dirt, wrap a stiff brush in clean cotton cloth. Scrub the sanded surface with the cloth wrapped brush. Brush bristles force cloth into the grooves and valleys of the old non-skid, removing contaminants from the surface. Change cloths frequently. Flush the surface with fresh water and allow to dry before wiping with Awl-prep.

Note Even on small jobs, long term performance is improved if surfaces are primed before an Awlgrip or Awlcraft 2000 Topcoat is applied.

Takes a little practice to get it spread.

We are using the fine grit additive and I believe the directions said to just sprinkle it evenly over the first topcoat while still wet. Perhaps in a perfect environment (an enclosed building with no air moving whatsoever) that 'may' be possible, but most DIYers don't work in a perfect situation. We are in the middle of painting our non-skid while in the water and having to deal with daily wind. Here's the method I've evolved to using and am getting pretty good/even results. Within 10-15 minutes of putting the first topcoat over the primer, I 'attempt' to sprinkle the particles with the confectioners sugar dispenser that is recommended. Keep in mind that for every 1 cup you get on the paint, about 1/4 cup blows in the breeze and is lost, either overboard, to another area on the boat, or even your neighbors boat! This stuff is extremely lightweight! It actually looks much like confectioners sugar. Buy extra if you have a large project. Once you have a 'whole' section covered completely, use a 2-3 inch chip brush to move the crystals around to get even coverage. You'll want to make sure you have plenty of crystals on before starting this because you will drag paint around if you don't. After 3-4 hours or so the paint will be dry enough to go back and lightly brush the excess off and vacuum off. AND......make sure your hatches and ports are all closed before opening the can! Ask me why? You'll be cleaning up non-skid particles/dust for days inside your boat!! I was skeptical that the 'fine' particles would have enough grip for the deck, but now that we have 2/3 of the boat done, I would say that since we don't wear shoes on deck, it is the perfect amount of grip.

I used this product on 36' Rinker top non skid area. I rolled it on, tried shake method, did not yield great results. mixed with paint and gelcoat before hardener or other activators worked best. Took 3 coats to get results desired. Used coarse size. Product must be mixed thoroughly.

AWLGRIP MIX RATIO

I dont know why so little product is being called for here. Awlgrips product sheet calls for much more product per gallon.............. ""For spray application, add 8-10 oz. (227-284 grams) by weight of GRIPTEX Non-Skid Particles to each gallon (3.785 liters) of mixed color base and converter""

Works Great

You'll need to use twice the amount specified to get a surface that is truly ""non-skid"". Other than that it is an awesome product. I used it with gelcoat.

Q: How do you select the size of the additive? I am after a good non slip finish for relatively steep decks on a Kadey Krogen. I hear that some finishes are akin to 30 grit sand paper which might not be comfortable to walk on or sit on or would graze the skin in the event of a fall (grand kids). Appreciate any input on the topic

Q: I am planning on using coarse GripTex with gelcoat. If I am using a cup gun, is it better to mix GripTex into the initial coat or spray the gelcoat by itself and use a large shaker for Grip Tex to get even coverage? After that should I wait a full day or apply the final coat of gelcoat after the first kicks in? Lastly, what additive do I use for matte gelcoat finish?

1 Answer

A: I don't think you could spray the coarse Grip Tex mixed in the paint. Best to spray a coat of paint and shake on the grip tex. Let that dry, vacuum up any excess then apply another coat of paint. Use Awlgrip flattening agent for a matte finish.

Q: Would you use on a deck? How would I do the hull? Tks.for the info. Jerry Kokoska

A: Yes I have used this on deck with excellent results. I would suggest briefly reading the manufactures guidelines to get familiar with there product and application procedures. There are two ways to apply this material, one is with a method called telegraphing. This is where you roll on the Awlgrip paint and while it's still wet, the Non-skid material is telegraphed or drop over the top by hand in a fashion that looks consistent. Be sure you have good coverage and excessive is ok. After the awlgrip has dried for a day use an air compressor with an air/water separator to blow off the excess nonskid material that didn't stick into the paint. Don't walk on it though as it's still soft paint underneath. The final step is to mix some more paint reduced by 10-15% based on your climate and role one coat over the Non-skid. This seals the material in place on adds a nice consistant look. Let it dry thuroughly for at least a week. The other method is to spray the Non-skid on. I've found this a more costly solution if your in a refit. This is due to material and labor to cover the areas you don't want sprayed. As for applying to a hull side, it may be possible using the telegraph method but I haven't tryed it. Hope this helps. JP

Q: Want to use this product with gel coat or some other non skid additives any suggestions?

A: Matt I used Griptex mixed with paint & brushed on a deck. I also used it sprinkled into wet paint, which was equally sucessful. I had best results by mixing coarse and fine Griptex. This gives a very good non-slip surface that is not as aggressive as all coarse , and hold much better than all fine. I have NO experience using it with Gel coat. I do not think it would work well sifted onto the wet surface of a gelcoat patch or sprayed on coat. I do not think it can be used against a mold surface.

Q: What was the preparation process? does it require two coats? Is med, non skid additive okay for a 40'sailboat deck? Any additional thoughts appreciated. Thank you Norm Jackonen

A: I cleaned and sanded first coat of West Systems epoxy with sun protection hardner then applied second coat rolled on followed by __quote__salting__quote__ or shaking the non-skid onto the wet coat. This allowed me to visually control the amount of non-skid applied and resulted in an excellent surface with lots of grip even when coated with water and fish slime. This is a great product and goes a very long way.One coat is adequate...work one 4__quote__ X 4__quote__ area at at time. Medium should be ideal but leave areas for sitting uncoated or provide cushions. Have fun. One tip is to try a limited and isolated, out-of-the-way area first to confirm your process yields desired results.
