Outstanding results

This was the only product I found readily available for refinishing our aluminum dinghy bottom. Initially primed with Total Protect Primer. Worked beautifully and so far, very robust. I'll use both next time too.

i won't purchase anything from Jamestown Distributors again.

I ordered 3 kits of Interlux VC Epoxy from Jamestown Distributors. Before the product ever left their property, I emailed them that my project had fallen through. No reply. Before epoxy was delivered, I called. I was informed it was non returnable. Period. I have used the Interlux before. Good product. I have used Jamestown Distributors before also. Horrible customer service!

Just spray it

Hard like gel coat. Not high gloss, but pleasantly smooth and oddly slick. Seems durable. Don't even pretend to roll and tip this stuff, however. It will NOT lay flat on its own, even at higher temps and well-thinned with brushing solvent. I laid on 1/2 a gallon with a roller and brush then had to sand it nearly all off because of the brush marks. Since the paint is exceptionally hard this was a miserable chore. After that painful experience, I sanded with 80 grit, then 120 grit with a Dual Action sander (3M Corp). Then, I got a good HVLP sprayer and diluted the paint 20% with Interlux 2333N brushing solvent. The paint does not readily sag or drip so I laid on four relatively thick coats. This worked great. Once the paint dried and cured, it looked outstanding. There were still faint swirl marks after 3 coats, so a more thorough sanding with the 120 grit or a 220 grit final hand wet-sand might be called for. I'll be interested to see how it performs one the boat is in the water. For now, though, I'm quite pleased with this finish!

Bad advice and support from Jamestown Distributors
5 years ago
I was told this product could be rolled on for a smooth surface from J.D. I did not perform as directed by the ""experts"" at Jamestown Distributors. This paint is made to be sprayed if your looking for a smooth finish. Jamestown would not exchange or give me credit for my purchase. All my money down the drain because of their bad advice and recommendations...

Really too thin for rolling or bushing was really messy to apply by brush or roller. The next time I use the product I will spray it on. I liked the finish when applied to the bottom of our boat

Brush marks

For those of you complaining about the difficulty you can have rolling/tipping or just brushing this product...yes it is difficult. But READ the data sheet and it is very clear this coating was designed for spray application. Dont assume all paints or coatings are applied in the same manner.

Forget trying to roll and tip this stuff
I'm sure this is a great product, but was very disappointed with my results with rolling-on and tipping with a brush. Left huge grooves and was very difficult to apply an even layer. I'm done this process many times with other paints and never had this issue. Ended up having to sand away practically everything that I put on in order to get the finish smooth.

Tough coating put over Interprotec 2000e for trailered sailboat. Also adds additional protection against osmosis in fiberglass boats.

Q: null I have a 15' whaler that was painted (bad job). Its peeling up, etc. The boat is going to get sand down back to the gel coat (or whats left of it) underside. I was going to fairing and sand the uneven spots where there are chips, etc. Which primer do I need and process before applying VC to it?
3 years ago1 Answer
A: Hello. I recommend InterProtect 2000e. The VC performance is an epoxy so it will only bond to another epoxy and the InterProtect is designed as its companion. Take a look at the data sheets for both products as they have a lot of good information including application guidelines such as spray tip sizes, etc. Brian

Q: null Can I paint the complete Hull of the boat with this product.
3 years ago3 Answers
A: Steven, I rolled and tipped my under-construction, 16-foot whitehall skiff with Interlux VC Performance Epoxy last year...the exterior hull from just above the waterline to the keel, and the interior under the floorboards. I also used it inside the mahogany centerboard trunk to ensure wood protection. Jamestown reps. were very helpful in supporting my decision to use the product for these purposes. I started with three coats of West System Epoxy. (West System 105-205 was used to saturate and coat 4-ounce fiberglas cloth over the western red cedar hull.) This was followed by two coats of Total Boat, Total Protect primer. Then all surfaces received three coats of the Interlux V C Performance Epoxy. I recommend properly thinning the paint as per the instructions and applying it quickly. Make sure the Total Protect primer is properly applied and sanded, if needed. Do not attempt to ""touch up"" or overwork the paint. Better to wait until it cures and sand any imperfections between coats. I have not had previous experience with epoxy paint. I'm hoping that the V C Performance Epoxy will hold up under UV exposure better than any poly alternatives.

Q: null After applying vc does it need to be in the water within a certain window. Im referbishing my boat and need a time frame as how soon do i need to put in water, or can it be out for a long time prior to launch.
4 years ago2 Answers
A: Hi There. No it does not have to be put in the water soon after application. I kept mine out for several months and it is on a trailer able boat I take out for several months per year. Keep in mind this paint has no anti-fouling properties and build up starts after a couple weeks in the San Francisco Bay. Cheers. Brian

Q: null Can ablative/anti fouling paint be put on top of this VC epoxy. If not what needs to be done in order To apply anti fouling paint
4 years ago1 Answer
A: Yes most bottom paints will be compatible with VC Offshore. Lightly sand the surface and wipe down with 216 thinner using a 2 rag method (1 rag dampened with 216thinner and the other to wipe off). Then apply your bottom paint.

Q: null Does the 199 sq-ft / gallon refer to the coverage of the entire gallon kit (which I understand consists of a gallon of base and gallon of catalyst) or the capacity of one gallon of total mixed base and catalyst? In other words, if I mixed the base/catalyst at a 1:1 ratio, should I expect the gallon kit to cover 199 sq feet or 398 square feet?

A: Sorry, I don't have direct knowledge of this. Buy a qt. kit and try it...

Q: null Can the color be changed?
5 years ago3 Answers
A: I used it in white only. Went on easy, but it's pretty thick so make sure you have the right set-up. You'd have to ask an interlux rep about adding color. You might be able to find it on the interlux website.
