Product Details

TotalBoat AlumiPaint AF is a copper-free antifouling paint that combines a powerful organic biocide to ward off barnacles & zebra mussels, plus zinc to combat slime for full-season protection on pontoons & aluminum hulls. This unique copolymer ablative wears away over time, continuously exposing fresh biocide for maximum protection.

Formulated especially for use on pontoon boats, it provides superior coverage, durability & performance. Apply 1-2 coats per season over previously painted surfaces in good condition, or over properly primed aluminum, steel or iron. It's also ideal for outdrives & running gear & won't cause galvanic corrosion.

APPLICATION NOTE - PRIMING Proper preparation and priming of bare aluminum is critical for paint performance and to prevent corrosion. Unprotected aluminum corrodes rapidly in salt or brackish waters. Even freshwater salinity can pose problems. We recommend priming with TotalBoat Aluminum Boat Barrier Coat Primer, as directed.

Black paint Turned gray

If the product keeps off the alege, I am fine. I was a little surprised that it turned gray after being in the water 24 hours. I applied two coats and let it dry 7 days before putting it in the water. The black color will come back when it's wet.

Absolutely NOT

I was expecting a paint that would not grow barnacles and algae, as advertised. I followed the application instructions word for word, and wish I have not bought this to begin with. This also applies to the topside paint which is incredibly thin. After numerous thin layers, it looked fantastic but it has already started to chip away after only 4 months of moderate use. Very disappointed, especially after the time I put into the project and the expensive price point.

This produce works!

This bottom paint goes on smoothly and looks great. Not enough time in the water yet to see how well it works over the course of a season but at this point I wouldn't hesitate to buy it again.

A: Hi Ryan, Thank you for reaching out. That should not be a problem, just prep per ""Previously Painted Surfaces"" here: https://doc.jamestowndistributors.com/userportal/pdfs/TotalBoat/totalboat-alumipaint-af-tds-3.28.22.pdf

Q: null Are there any data sheets that specify spray gun application? What is the recommended PSI and tip size size for a HVLP?

1 Answer

A: Sorry, there is no tech data on spray application. As a general rule, spray application is not recommended for most bottom paints because they're too thick to spray without thinning, and thinned paint will not contain enough biocide to be effective. Spraying of antifouling paints is prohibited in Canada.

Q: null The description states to reduce this product with Xylene when spraying. Can you tell me how much it should be reduced: 4:1, 2:1, 1:1?

1 Answer

A: Thinning will vary depending on your environmental conditions. You can thin up to 20% percent but the goal should be not to add any more than necessary to get good flow.

Q: null Will total boat aluminum AF bottom paint adhere to bare metal on the bottom of my Jon boat. Do I really need to use primer because I really don't have any extra money to buy primer since everything I'm reading says apply primer first. I've already sanded it down to bare medal so I'm ready to paint now

A: Epoxy primer should be used. Hardware store spray primer may not withstand prolonged submersion.

Q: null why do I NEED PRIMER? ON NEW ALUMINUM DINGY ? WHAT PRIMER AND HOW MUCH FOR 11' ?

1 Answer

A: I have an aluminum hull Achilles RIB that stays in the water through the season. When I first got it I knew I wanted to use antifouling. I was advised to strip off the new white hull paint, put down an epoxy primer and then use the alumipaint AF antifouling. I'm glad I didn't do that. Instead I slightly scuffed the hull paint and put down the alumipaint that slightly overlapped onto the hypalon tubes. On the tubes themselves, I used a different antifouling made for hypalon that remains flexible. This combination has worked great for me, with very little growth through a season and great paint adherence. Each season I renew with a single coat. No problems.

Q: null I bought a 1968 Weldcraft aluminum project boat 24' X 8'. It is painted blue on the side rails, cabin, and bow deck with a blue strip on the side. Some paint is existing, some new aluminum for cabin changes and a very small amount has come off. It is primed with something that seem secure for the most part. Is this paint for above waterline as well as below the water line? Can I paint over the existing paint? What do you recommend for paint and procedures? I'd like to keep expense low. There is probably 400 to 450 square feet to paint, all above the water line. I'm going to buy something in the near future. I want the best I can afford

1 Answer

A: This paint is only intended for below the waterline. Above the waterline, bare aluminum should be primed with epoxy primer.then it can be overcoated with a one or two part urethane paint. Two part urethane paints will give you the best looking and most durable finish. Painted surfaces can be overcoated with paint, however, before using a two part paint you should test the existing paint for compatibility. If acetone or paint stripper wrinkles the existing paint it is not compatible with a two part urethane. Plan on 400 sq ft per gallon for each type of paint used.
