FixWood Repairs Rotted Wood for Good

TotalBoat FixWood is great for permanent repairs to wood that's rotted, missing or damaged, especially if it's not feasible to replace the wood due to its unique shape or historic value. Just fix it in place with FixWood.

In cases of deep rot, the wood must be consolidated first so it's strong enough to accept FixWood. Use TotalBoat Penetrating Epoxy to consolidate punky or soft areas, then apply FixWood while the Penetrating Epoxy is still tacky, for maximum bonding strength.

It's a money saver !

I have a 1962 wooden boat that I bought in terrible condition. This product kept a lot of the rotted hull from having to be replaced. It is easy to use, sands well and does exactly as it claims. Three years and is still as good as new. Even used it to repair and patch a windowsill at my home.

I used this to fix some rotted wood on two French doors. This stuff is great. Easy to mix, easy to apply, sets up nicely. Now all I have to do is get sandpaper into the corners.

Great for repairing transom

I am restoring an old 1960's Starcraft and needed to do a small amount of wood replacement on the transom. Not wanted to do a full transom redo I looked to this product for help. Mixing is quick and easy. Kind of mixes like dough. Hardened in just 6 hours and sanding was like butter. Recommend.

Perfect for any wood project

While I have been boating for awhile, I am not using this product on a boat. In combination with Total Boat Penetrating Epoxy, I am using this to repair rotted wooden window sills and frames. It's perfect. I mix the 2 parts with each about the size of a golf ball. It starts out kind of stiff and during kneading, becomes very soft and malleable. Unlike other 2 part systems, this product is very easy to sand. Follow the instructions! It is far superior when using an adhesion coat of Penetrating Epoxy.

Good for filling gaps in old wood.

I used this wood putty to fill some cracks, checks, knots, and screw holes in the oak superstructure of a lobster boat. I used it over the penetrating epoxy according to the instructions on the product and had good results with adhesion. It's easily sanded with a random orbital sander so don't be scared if it goes on a little proud of what you are filling. My only caution is that despite its 20 minute working time, towards the 10 minute mark it will become exponentially more difficult to work with so do yourself a favor and mix very small batches. Also I'd recommend a pretty stiff metal putty knife as it hits this harder-to-work-with consistency. Overall, easy to use and does exactly what it says it will. Wish the color were a bit darker, though.

Q: null I am rebuilding a 1957 Lyman. I removed 12 ribs which I am replacing. I want to fix some miner rot/damage and fill all the old nail holes. Is this the right stuff to use?

2 Answers

A: Ken, Thank you for reaching out. It would definitely work for that. Works great with the penetrating epoxy as a rot treatment. Penetrating epoxy first to seal and stiffen the old wood and when it becomes tacky apply the Fixwood to it.

Q: null Is water based latex paint compatible with this prodjuct

3 Answers

A: Yes. I repaired porch columns with this product a few years ago in the Northeast and the latex paint adhered without issue and has remained that way. As with any epoxy, especially when not knowing the cure chemistry, I wipe with a rag wet with water, to remove possible amine blush, followed by acetone typically. Amine blush is not soluble in most solvents but readily cleans up with water.

Q: null Will Lust, Gleam, or other non-water based varnishes properly adhere to cured FixWood?

3 Answers

A: Hey Vince, Thank you for reaching out. You can apply Gleam or Lust over Fixwood, just follow the instructions for Epoxied surfaces here: https://doc.jamestowndistributors.com/userportal/pdfs/TotalBoat/totalboat-lust-varnish-tds-1.28.22.pdf AS for other varnishes, I cannot say for sure, usually they would, but we cannot guarantee every other oil based varnish as we have not tested them all, it's best to follow the instructions above and then do a test in an inconspicuous area.

Q: null Specs and directions say ""paintable."" Will FixWood also provide good adhesion to Lust, Gleam, or other non-water based varnishes? Thank you.

1 Answer

A: Hi there. Yes, FixWood will accept varnishes such as Lust and Gleam 2.0. Please keep in mind that because FixWood is a different color than the wood surrounding it and has a different texture and porosity, you will likely be able to see the repair underneath the varnish.

Q: null What is the maximum recommended thickness (or depth of a repair) for application of this product?

2 Answers

A: The application I used this for was to repair a rotted fir window sill (outside).  The hole after cleaning out the rotted wood was probably 2-in long by 1-in deep at the max.  The Fix Wood was hard the next day, sanded nicely, and accepted latex house paint well.  I don't know it's actual limits however, but hope that may have helped a little.
