Info & Guides

Great for Filling, Fairing, and Repairing Composite Surfaces

TotalBoat Polyester Fairing Compound is easy to work with, easy to sand, and provides optimal strength. It's ideal for making quick and easy cosmetic repairs to fiberglass and gelcoat surfaces. Just mix with MEKP catalyst, apply easily with a putty knife, wait while it sets up quickly, then sand. No need to worry about measuring the exact amounts of resin, filler, and wax—we've done it for you!

This lightweight polyester cosmetic filler is primarily for use in tooling and repair applications as a fairing material only, and is not designed for high-strength repairs. For structural repairs requiring strength and dimensional stability, you can use TotalBoat Polyester Structural Repair Putty, a high-strength, fibrous polyester putty for filling larger cracks & voids. After it cures, apply TotalBoat Polyester Fairing Compound over the repaired area, let it cure, then sand to achieve an extremely smooth surface ready for gelcoat or paint.

IMPORTANT!

TotalBoat Polyester Fairing Compound is for use above the waterline only, and can be overcoated with gelcoat or paint. If used below the waterline, it must be overcoated with TotalBoat TotalProtect Epoxy Barrier Coat Primer, to prevent water damage.

fairing compound difficult to sand

The fairing compound would not harden on thin applications, making sanding a real mess. Seemed to do better with thicker blemishes. Not what I expect for fairing compound.

Too thin

For a fairing compound this product is very thin and hard to smooth out. Much thinner than the comparable epoxy compound which used to be the best out there now has its own issue in the opposite direction.

Delivered frozen and damaged :(

I was really excited for this product because I could not find Poly Fair F26 (UK) to fair my '84 Eastern restoration. The two gallon cans were both dented. The first one looked fine but once I started scooping it realized it was very thin and runny. Too thin even with some extra MEKP because then it would curdle quickly. After drying it was pasty and did not sand well at all. Once I opened the second can I realized the problem, the cans were frozen. At the top of the second gallon was a crystaline mess of polyester something. I'm not sure. The second gallon was still very thin and fluid. Adding wax helped a little. It also helped when sanding. Overall i'm very disappointed. I think we would have been better off picking up the product in Bristol if that was an option. I miss going into the store.

Stays soft - does not harden

Used for a simple deck repair for spider cracks and a couple of minor holes. The holes I made epoxy repairs leaving room for fairing. Wanted a fairing compound that gelcoat could be placed over without a primer. Thought this was the fairing compound to use after seeing the video, reading the documentation and reviews. This fairing would not harden even after 24 hours. Stays gummy and sticky. Tried varying the component hardener with same results. Made sanding very difficult, even with wet sanding. Also found the material shrinks and does not look as well as the TB videos make it out to be. Was a real mistake using this fairing compound. Something that was supposed to be so simple wound up being a mess. Would not recommend using.

Q: I am having trouble getting the product to set up. Could you please clarify two points from the included instructions: ""14-16 drops of MEKP to one ounce of TotalBoat Polyester Fairing Compound will provide a working time of 10-15 minutes, and will cure in 20-30 minutes."" Can you confirm that ""ounce"" is referring to fluid ounce? ""20-30 minutes for a 100g mass catalyzed with 1% MEKP @ 77°F"". Can you confirm that 1% is referring to 1% by weight (1g in this example)? Thanks for your help.

A: If it is getting firm but remaining tacky, that is the normal result. To fully set up it must be sealed from air. This is typically done by overcoating with PVA, finishing resin, or gelcoat with wax. Typically it is measured by volume but you can also use weight. 14 drops is approximately 1% mekp to one ounce by volume. Polyester is pretty forgiving and it will cure even if slightly undercatalyzed but it will take longer. If it's not getting firm try adding more drops of MEKP in your mix. For more accurate measuring you can use a Bodi Adjustable Volume Dispenser.

Q: Why do some responders state this product stays tacky and gums up sandpaper?

A: Hey Ron, Thank you for reaching out. This product should not stay tacky if properly mixed, in all of our tests and my personal use I have never had it do that. It has a wax like any finishing poly that suffocates and cures it along with the MEKP to harden it.

Q: I would like to know if the polyester fairing compound is ok to use over dried laminating resin (with shredded mat) I used ? I made a repair above the water line and now need to fair and gelcoat. Thanks

1 Answer

A: Yes. For fine fairing applications such as small scratches or small cavities less than 1/8"", sand the substrate with 100-180 grit sandpaper. For larger areas and deeper crevices more than 1/8"" deep, sand the area with 60-80 grit sandpaper. Then remove all sanding residue.

Q: Product description says it cannot be used below waterline unless coated with epoxy. Can this be used to smooth a fiberglass lamination below the waterline if completely coated with gelcoat as well?

1 Answer

A: Gel coat is in large part a polyester resin with a lot of titanium and styrene in it, it is not an epoxy resin. I would say no. Epoxy cures completely smooth with no porosity. Not the same can be said for the polyesters. Use epoxy to cover the filler, then use a barrier coat paint in place of the gel coat, (barrier coat is epoxy). It is really a good choice to completely coat the bottom of your boat with a barrier coat. You can then apply a bottom paint for antifouling purposes.
