I bought this wrench to help remove and install new thru hulls. (Note that the description plainly states that it is not for ""removal""). If I could have had enough room inside of the bilge for the thru-hull removal, the wrench might have worked but we ended up just grinding the mushrooms off the thru-hulls and then using the tool for the reinstall. Worked great and we (two person tool only, one on the boat inside and one outside holding the tool with a monkey wrench) were able to quickly reinstall new thru-hulls. Couldn't have done it without this tool.

I found it very useful both to put in thru hulls and also to remove them - I don't know why the manufacturer says it is not suitable for removing thru hulls. It's robust, heavy duty and does what it's designed for.

If the thru-hull is old, its knobs/keys that the wrench locks into may be gone. Then the wrench is useless and you either try vice grips or a grinder and grind off the ring of the TH. For an install, the tool was VERY helpful to tighten the TH from the outside where there was not room for a wrench on the inside nut.

Q: null I need a step wrench that for sure fits Forespar Marelon thru hulls, I bought 1 from West Marine it fits bronze but NOT fit Marelon made by Forespar??? Can you folks help me ???

A: I'm sorry but I bought this item in June 2013, so I cannot remember how long it took to be delivered. I guess I expected it to take about 2 weeks from point of ordering, to delivery down here in Cornwall. So I would probably remember if it had been markedly different from this.

A: A shopper asked: Will it work with Graco thru hulls too Hi Larry Sorry, but I live in the UK, and I have no idea what Graco thru-hulls are, although of course I can guess. The step wrench I bought works for a number of different diameter thru-hulls, although it DOES have one inevitable design problem: because the wrench has ?À_??steps?À_?? in it, one for each internal diameter it has to fit, there comes a time when the LENGTH of the combined steps means that you cannot make the larger sized steps fit a large-diameter thru-hull without sawing off the smaller diameter steps ?À_?? these smaller steps physically prevent the wrench from reaching into the fitting because of the design of the valve inside it. I hope I have explained this clearly, it is not easy to describe without a sketch. In my case, this was a very expensive answer to an otherwise impossible problem, but then, I live in the UK and had to pay postage from the USA. Best regards William Humphreys

A: Yes, from what I can see on Spartan's web site pictures, and knowing what the tool actually looks like. What you can't see from the picture of the tool are the small groves cut into each of the steps on the tool which grip onto the tabs on the thru-hull. I just visited Spartan's web site and looked at their thru-hulls and you can clearly see one of the two tabs inside the thru-hill. Great tool.
