West System Made Me Look Like A Pro

This being my first time using West System, I couldn't be happier. Using the metering pumps was so much easier than trying to measure out exact volumes. The project came out very good.

West is best...

If 17th and 18th century English Admiralty shipbuilders could have used epoxy for frigates, man-o-wars, ships of the line, they would have.

Gone West...

West System would have been used by British Admiralty shipwrights in the 17th century if it were available. I'm glad to be able to use it now.

The key is the ratio

First time: mix only a small amount-2 or 3 ounces. Use the right ratio! Get a feel for the harding time and your tools.

Worked better than I expected.

""Fast"" was slower then expected, which was a plus for a difficult glue-up. Loved the despensers; quick, clean, accurate! Easier to use than any previous products. Piano back frame strength is restored and ready for the next century. Ordered another kit for the next job.

Consistent results

At the lower range of use temperatures, I found it helpful to put heat lamp on wet epoxy to reduce the cure time. Otherwise its several days to cure. Biggest drawback with this product is its price. Like all epoxy, it's messy and you need to be prepared to work with it by using proper application and protective equipment.

Questions

Q: null What is the usable temp range of the fast hardener?

1 Answer

A: The minimum working temperature is 40 degrees. At 72 degrees the pot life is 9-12 minutes. In warmer temperatures, the pot life will be reduced and you would want to use 206.

Q: null I read to fix stress cracks use 105/20x resin. What does the 20x represent. Thank you Burt

1 Answer

A: Hello, that 20x must be a typo mistake, West System has 205, 206, 207 and 209 hardeners. The 205(fast) and 206(slow) are most popular.

A: I have had my opened containers for five years. Just used it again a few weeks ago and it was fine. Never allowed it to freeze. It does turn a darker amber with and but does not affect hardening.

Q: null Are there any side affects using 205 when sanded as in rash , itchy ?

A: Some of us are sensitive/allergic to epoxy. Actually the hardener I believe. I too swelled up badly until I learned. I must avoid the fumes and skin contact. I get rid of the fumes with a fan blowing fresh air into my work area and use rubber gloves combined with long sleeved work shirt with tight cuffs. I am not a boat builder, I am a hobby woodworker. I am currently using West System 105/207 epoxy. I have no problems when I am careful with skin contact and blowing the vapor away from my eyes and that is easy to do.

Q: null I am looking to apply closet cedar planks to my bathroom drywall ceiling. It is a moisture prone area because it contains both the shower and tub and I live in a humid area. I am curious if this epoxy product West Systems is recommended for this use as I would like it to last my lifetime? The area is approximately 75 square feet....any idea on how much I might require for an area this size if this is a good choice? Thank you. Aloha, LaRen

A: Sir: Be certain that you have used ""moisture proof sheet rock "" as a surface to bond with. Any adhesive is only as good as the surface integrity you are bonding with. Perhaps 3/8 ths inch plywood screwed in place will give you the performance you are looking for. If it is that wet, get exterior glue plywood. Once you have a quality subsurface, West system epoxy will do an excellent job of securing your cedar for all time. Best regards, Dan
