Product Details

Teleflex 4.2 No Feedback Steering Systems are the most revolutionary advancements in mechanical boat steering since the Teleflex helical cable. Built with the same emphasis on safety, durability, and performance as the Safe-T, Big-T, and Rack Steering Systems, the newly designed No-Feedback units help effectively eliminate torque feedback at the helm making for the easiest and safest mechanical steering on the market today.

The precision die-cast zinc helm incorporates the new SSC62XX helical cable assembly for quick and easy installation. Dual cable helms are also available for boats that exceed 50 mph or experience steering instability from engine flutter.

I will probably replace this system with a hydraulic system

Replaced in kind steering system which had only two seasons of use. While the no feedback system works it is hard to turn at higher speeds. At low speeds its easy to turn. Installation can also be difficult as the last two feet of the cable is solid, and in some cases, like mine, the engine may need to be removed to install into the tilt tube. Helm installation is quite easy.

Could not be happier

I highly recommend this product. I installed this on my 1974 Boston whaler Montauk. It was a close call as I have an older winged console and this does not sit as high as the orginal big t steering I had on it. It fit perfectly and install was a breeze. Hardest part is fishing the new cable through but even that was easy. Big fan of this no feed back steering in comparison to what I had. It's nice not having the motor jumping around or the wheel spinning to high hell when I grab one of the rods while trolling. I have heard others complain of friction with the nfb steering systems. None here. Smooth as can be. Great upgrade on a very old Whaler.

Better than original helm, NFB 4.2 rotary.

1990 Wellcraft Sportfish. Used orig manf # for cable length (13') replacement was shorter than original by about 6"". Don't think longer (14') would have fit into center console. Must have a plan to deal with any cuts made in fiberglass to accommodate removal/replacement of engine end if engine removal is impractical. I used Starboard 1/2"" to shrink enlarged cable exit down to original size.

Product installation and application was great

Instruction were adequate and installation was fairly easy. Had a little trouble getting the steering wheel off and not sure if there was any instuctions for this item. The steering wheel and mating surface are tapered and secured with a nut that forces the steering wheel on the steering rod.

JD shipped fast and steering works great

The videos Jamestown Distributors put on Youtube showed us how to remove our broken steering helm and cable. Talks with JD staff helped us decide on the best replacement steering system for our boat. The JD videos also showed us how to install the replacement Teleflex 4.2 NFB system. JD shipped the item promptly and it works perfectly. Thank you, JD.

Questions

Q: I was told the SS147 (4.2) is for engines over 150 horse and that the SS132 (safe-t) is the right choice for my 75 horse. Can this be cleared up it does not specify this on your website. Also, is one a better product over the other? It seems the 4.2 is a newer designed product and may be a little better than the other options mentioned? If so would it work for my boat? I have an 83 16 ft blue fin with rotary steering (that pulls hard to the right!)

1 Answer

A: It primarily has to do with how much range of motion there is. Engines naturally pull to the left, If your engine is puling to the right, check the trim tab setting. An NFB system will reduce pull from the motor. More information is available at www.seastarsolutions.com.

Q: For the end of the steering cable running through the tilt tube - are these diameters and lengths standard, or do I need to specify a particular length and diameter? I have a 1999 Javelin Renegade, 17.5', with a 115 Evinrude Ficht engine. I can come up with length when I pull the original cable out. Thanks

1 Answer

A: The dimension is standard for all tilt tubes. Al you need to know is the correct length of the cable, which should be stamped on the plastic cable jacket.

Q: Can I get the steering pieces to change from straight out to 15 degrees upward tilt? The only #'s I could find were a partial 521070 and 3950210 Seastar. It is uncomfortable straight out for leg room.

Q: I have a 1960 13 foot whaler with a 30 horse yamaha 1987 I think. I am removing the cable steering and wondering if there is something I need to convert engine to teleflex. also can I use the old steering wheel

1 Answer

A: Most 13' Whalers use a Teleflex Safe T QC steering system with a 9' cable that connects directly to the tilt tube on the engine. However some of the earlier Whalers had a lower transom height that prevents the cable from connecting to the tilt tube. If you have that version, you should call tech support as you'll need a shorter cable and some extra brackets.

Q: I have a 2019 Mako pro-Skiff 15. It has the standard rotary steering package (not hydraulic). I do not like the slop in the wheel (approximately 8"" of free play). Is there a replacement helm that would reduce the slop?

1 Answer

A: 8"" of play is a lot, a new helm kit should eliminate that.

Q: I have an older 13' Boston Whaler, hull #22903. That seems to correspond to 1967. It has a side console and the old cable & pulley steering, linked to a 2008 Yamaha 25hp outboard. The cable recently snapped and I'd like to replace it with a modern system. I'm looking for guidance on a replacement helm and the appropriate Teleflex system for my boat. I can also provide measurements and photos as required.

Q: I am replacing the cable steering system on an 11' 199 Boston Whaler. I've been told that I need an 11 foot cable, is that correct? Additionally, can I use my existing steering wheel or do I need to replace it?

4 Answers

A: When I did mine, I determined the length from the numbers on the original cable. The same length in the new cable was a tad shorter (6__quote__ longer would have been better). I had to change the helm to be compatible with the new cable ends. My original Teleflex cable was threaded, the new is retained by bolts. Used my original steering wheel after I destroyed the original helm on order to remove it. I operate my 1999, 18' center console Wellcraft in saltwater and parts tend to corrode together after 20yrs. Length formulas and videos are available from this web site.
