Q: null My TotalBoat gel coat with wax is not curing can I use PVA sprayed over it to eliminate air and make it harden up. I brushed it on inside my ice box and after several days it is still wet and smells chemical. It was the gel coat with wax but I think the wax had come to the top of the Quart bottle where I had to cut it away Inorder to pour the gel coat out. The temp has been freezing at night daytime is 50 F and I use a heater with boat open. I've got a mess now. The product is 2 yrs old at this point.

A: I am by no means an expert on this stuff but almost always when I am using gelcoat or doing fiberglass repair it is during the winter months and this temp range and colder is typically what I am dealing with. If your gelcoat is 2 years old and was already opened then it may just be too old to use at this point. There is also a chance that it didn't get mixed well enough again before using it this time, and between that and the cold temperatures youre dealing with is keeping it from curing. The amount of MEKP used to catalyze the gelcoat I would guess is going to be crucial to the curing or lack thereof when dealing with 50degrees and less. The fact that it is still wet after several days leads me to believe that the curing problem is purely catalyst, and temperature related. Because even if theres no wax in the gelcoat it should still set up and be dry to the touch but not fully ""cured"" until wax was introduced. I cant fully grasp your set up regarding the ice box on the boat and where it is and how youre using the heater, If the boat is open and youre got a heater going in the general space youre in I don't think that will do you much good. I have had success in the past using a directional heat source, like an artificial sun which is like a tabletop oscillating fan that is an electric heater. I think if you can directly apply heat to the space your gelcoat is layed up it could cure, although with freezing temps there may have been too much moisture introduced at this point to be fully successful. I would say if you can introduce directional heat to the ice box and get what you layed up to dry, then you could go over it again with another batch of unwaxed or waxed gelcoat while keeping the heat source on it. if you cannot get it to dry with the introduction of heat then you may need to wipe out what you can and then spray or brush PVA on it to see if it drys. Other things to keep in mind, shake or stir your gelcoat can very well before, and during catalyzation. Also preheating your product before mixing in catalyst will help immensely. Keeping consistent temperature before during and after application is a must in your situation. I know the struggle of dealing doing this kind of work in cold temperatures, Good Luck.
