substandard

8-32 x 1/2"" flathead machine screws received, bound in the stainless steel bracket I had. They broke when removing. Checked them with a magnet and found that they are not stainless steel even though that is what I ordered. A replacement box was sent to me but they also are not stainless steel. Never had a problem with hardware received before, this must be a bad batch.

[ Had what I needed

I used the machine screw and nylon nuts in place of rivets. I am recarpeting my boat. Riveting all the lids back would have taken forever. Going through Jamestown save me time and money

Questions

1 - 1 of 1 Question

Q: What grade of SS are these screws? 18-8 or 316?

A: There are lots of alloys called stainless, and some contain enough iron to be magnetic. So if it's not magnetic, it probably is stainless, but if it IS magnetic, it may still be stainless. The iron makes the metal much stronger, although less resistant to corrosion in chemicals stronger than water.
