Product Details

Awlgrip Wash Primer CF is a chromate-free etch primer that provides superior paint adhesion to aluminum, anodized aluminum, and stainless steel surfaces. Wash Primer CF is not suitable for use on wooden or plastic surfaces. Can be directly overcoated with Awlgrip, Awlgrip HS and Awcraft 2000 topcoats.

This chromate-free etch primer is based on "Controlled Fusion" (CF) technology. CF technology is a unique chemical system that allows extended re-coat times, removes the need for sanding prior to applying the next coat and provides excellent substrate adhesion. CF technology eliminates the requirement for high hazard chemicals and ensures a tightly fused intercoat layer between the CF-based coating and the next applied coat.

FOR PROFESSIONAL USE ONLY.

Q: null 1]will this bond to sand blasted stainless steel 2]what hard nonskid product would be best with this primer

1 Answer

A: It will bond to stainless. You should follow with Awlgrip 545 primer. From there you can use any kind of nonskid you want. If it is going to see hard service it's likely that any paint will require regular recoats.

Q: null I have stripped the loose paint off my aluminum mast and now have some exposed aluminum, some primer and some finish paint. Can I apply the Awl Grip primer, 3300 & 6600 over all these substrates

A: Is the aluminum anodized (you can check with multimeter)? If not, current recommendation from Awlgrip (in order to avoid using chrome containing compounds, e.g. Alumiprep/Alodine) is to use their CF product before primer (presumably 545). I'm not sure about a mix of substrates... we used 'aircraft' stripper and just took it all the way down to aluminum, which is of course a PIA.

Q: null I want to touch up the skeg on my white Awlgrip painted Yamaha motor. I want to use a sprayer for the painting (Fuji Pro-2) with M-model spay gun. What primer do I use for the Awlgrip Polyester Urethane Topcoat Base, if any?

A: Awlgrips WashPrimer CF is the best way to go.... Had leftovers from refinishing my mast so I did the lower housing of my outboat and painted it awlgrip hatteras white... That was 2 years ago and it still looks like it did the day I painted. Prior to that it was acid wash then Zinc Chromate before paint but the bond was always hit and miss... Wash Primer CF is a bit pricey but the bond between it and aluminum and the topcoat is un beatable.. hope this helps

Q: null While painting vehicles isn't new to me, painting a new aluminum boat is. What products from primer to topcoat to clear is best? I am just not familiar with the best product needed. The local distributor didn't offer any help so they will not be getting my business. Primer does need to be sandable as there are imperfections where welds were ground down.
