Good Primer
I use this on my pontoon panels, brushed along the frame then rolled the rest of the panels. Primer was thick but I did not have to thin at the temperature I had, but the thinner is great for clean up

Better Primer than Most
We got to the finishing stage of our cuddy cabin build on our 20'LOA, 20' Ply on Frame Fiberglassed backyard built boat and decided to purchased the entire TotalBoat finishing system that included this primer. We're glad we did as the primer was easy to apply, had an excellent buildup and after a few coats, easy to fine sand. The base it established for the TotalBoat topside paint was extraordinary. We highlt recommend it over any other marine use primer on the market.

I wouldn't buy this product again,

Very difficult to work with, especially in south Fl. Thinner recommended really sucks. Directions on website and various videos provide different directions. Website recommends xylene as reducer for wet edge finish coat when spraying, but produces terrible results when laying over the primer.

TotalBoat Topside Primer Is A Winner!

This primer applies and sands nicely and is a great undercoat for the TB WetEdge Topside paint. If rolled on, it needs to be thinned with the associated Brush Thinner to suit the temperature conditions when you are applying it.

Excellent for coverage and little sagging

The only drawback to this product is that it turns a very light tan when it dries. Actually kind of useful when you know about it, it helps spot holidays in the top coat.

Good Alternative

Creates a nice thick base. 2 or 3 coats and then sand back. I orbital sanded 120, 180 and 220 to glass smooth finish. The topcoat went on beautifully.

Works, but you will need to wet sand.

Easy to use and covers well. The major problem is that it gums up the sandpaper even after 72 hours, However, if you wet sand it is not a problem.

Doing a rebuilt on an old C-Hawk and this is what the doctor ordered. Great filler properties and base coat/foundation for this 30+ year old hull inside and out.

HARD TO SAND
Perhaps thining the primer before rolling on would have helped, next time. I planned on spraying but it was too windy so I rolled it on. Had a hard time sanding after I rolled it on. Took about 1 hour per square foot to bring it down to a smooth surface. I also us d automotive primer in another area and was much easier to sand.

Worked great. I sprayed it through my primer HVLP gun with a 1.8 tip. I thinned it 20% with Zylene. two coats gave good coverage. Topped it with Wet Edge.

I don't like it.

There are two things wrong with this product. Xylol must be used to clean your brushes. If you were trying to save a buck or two by buying this brand, and don't already have Xylol in your shop, you're going to eat up all your savings. More importantly, many sandpapers clog up with this product. I could not use my ROS with 3M paper. The sanded material heated up, attached itself to the paper, got hotter, and deposited itself in globs on the newly-primed surface. This happened within 15 seconds, using a new disc. I had to hand sand everything. Even then, some quality papers did not work.

Did not work for me...

used this under single stage topside paint, rolled on with foam roller(light coat) The stuff took way longer to dry than info said, terrible to try to sand, even after letting dry another 8 hours. I used very little of it and wish was returnable..for this kind of job where you are wanting a very smooth surface stay away from this in my opinion

This primer didn't brush out well.
I was using TotalBoat Topside Primer on bare wood surfaces in my boat. The conditions at the time were overcast and low 60's F. The primer didn't brush out well even while trying to keep a wet edge. With hindsight, I probably should have thinned it.

Ok, hate to do this, but done lots of painting, tried this primer for a topside epoxy job I'm doing. There may be a good use for this but not for mine and if you are expecting a nice sandable primer that you can get nice and smooth, this is not it !!!! worst junk ever had to deal with in my life !! After giving it 30+ hours dry time @ 80 still sands terrible and balls up terrible. I talked to tech guys after waiting 6 hours(they say 1-4) and told let dry more, still junk to me..they said maybe to thick ?? did with foam roller in what I consider not to heavy. Super disappointed in this and have not finished dealing with it as of yet...

Cure time was unacceptable
I applied this via roller, during the April to July time frame, here in Key West FL. With no thinner at all it was nearly unworkable. It gummed up the sandpaper even after 7 days of waiting. I started thinning it (up to 40%!) and got better results, but the final product almost always gummed up the sandpaper to some extent, no matter how long I waited. Considering the temps here in the Keys, it makes no sense as to why I'd be waiting days upon days for a cured product. It really put the brakes on my project as it set me back weeks waiting for a sandable finish. One coat, wait 3-5 days, one coat, wait 3-5 days. Eventually I was able to get it sanded and overcoated, so I'm not giving it one star, but I'll be reluctant to ever use this again. On the flip side, however, I've had great success with everything else from Totalboat!

This is a good product. I used two coats to cover above water line of my paintless aluminum boat. Used a brush. Easy to apply, and I'm sure it made a good base for my Topside Total Boat paint.

Don't sand this primer in hot weather or direct sunshine
5 years ago
I sprayed the primer (thinned 15%) with some difficulty. Probably would have gone on better with a larger air cap. At the time all I had was a 1.3 mm. I had a lot of trouble sanding the primer due to its dust particles re-combining into little balls or disks and sticking to both the boat surface and the sand paper within seconds or about 10 swipes. This was after letting the primer set and cure for 3 days. I was board sanding by hand in order to fair a small racing sailboat's hull. I think the problem was due to the sand paper having a small contact area between the flat board and curved hull and friction creating heat. I learned to sand in the shade either early or late in the day when ambient temperature was below 65 degrees. Probably should have wet sanded and used a more flexible board. Applied primer in April in mostly cool weather. Perhaps if primer had cured in warmer 80 degree temps it would not have clumped up as badly for me. It seems like a good primer otherwise.
