MICRON CSC Antifouling Bottom Paint

super good bottom paint for New Jersey and northern waters, works very well and I am in the water for 9 out of 12 months a year, lasts two years with minimal touchups and I have little or no growth at all. easy to use and less costly than Micron 66 which is outstanding but much more in price.[...]

My Kind of Paint

I've used this paint on my boat for 5 years. When I first bought it, I gave a quick sand to the existing paint, then applied 3 thick coats of Micron. I haven't had to paint the bottom since (not including the shafts, tabs, rudders, etc.) I simply touch up the waterline and above for looks, and then a few quick spots beneath. This paint holds up extremely well, doesn't flake, and resists growth unlike anything else (IMO). I saw boats hauled out of the marina loaded with barnacles. I could could the number I had on one hand. It saves me a ton of time in the spring because I don't have to paint the entire bottom. It's a little messy and takes forever to get off your hands even if it's wet, but that goes for most bottom paints. It's easy to roll and stays on the shelf forever. In the Spring I just pull the skin off, give it a good stir, and I'm ready to go.

A: Hi Joe. Unfortunately no, this cannot be applied over VC17m. You will need to remove the VC17, prior to using this paint. If you would rather not remove the VC17m, you'll need to recoat with more VC17m.

A: I have been using Micron CSC both on my 30' sailboat and 35 knot capable center console in brackish water mid Chesapeake Bay. I keep the sailboat in water 3 years or so at at time and I would say the antifouling properties are good for a solid 1 1/2 years. It seems like moss, or slime, gradually builds up and then barnacles start attaching. I control that by wiping down the hull (with scuba) with a 3M pad, or sometimes just with work gloves. It seems the teflon component really does help with getting organisms to release at that point. The boat sits in mud on really low tides, stripping bottom paint off there, so it is easy to guage effectiveness of the bottom paint. As far as being ablative preventing buildup, I would say not so much. I still fair remaining bottom paint with 60 grit before spring launch. Michael

Q: My Nonsuch 354 bottom is about 280 sq ft. How much CSC do I need per coat?

1 Answer

A: According to the tech sheet posted on the web page, one gallon covers 439.7 square feet, however that does not account for loss. Its' safe to say that one gallon will get you almost two coats. The paint will keep if stored properly so it would be more economical to buy it by the gallon.

A: I don't think so.  I have never heard of a high gloss bottom paint.  I've used this paint for years.  It's great.  But not high gloss.

Q: will this product work on wood boats

3 Answers

A: David - Micron CSC works well on wooden boats, at least on two Beetle Cat bottoms which have been repainted annually for many years. Attention though to avoid overpainting and/or too little preparation before applying new coats. Like all copper-infused bottom paints, too much paint can cake and chip away, leaving a rough surface. My practice (not Micron's recommendation) was to apply just one coat each spring, which would ablate down to almost bare wood by fall. Both boats have proven fast in competition. Hope this helps. Be well.
