Product Details

This triaxial fiberglass cloth is an E-TLX 2200-10 (0, +/-45°) 23.55oz/sq.yd E-Glass made by Vectorply. Triaxial fiberglass combines the benefits of unidirectional and standard +/-45 biaxial fiberglass. The fiber tows run in perpendicular angles to add strength and reduce both torsional and longitudinal flexion and strain. The weave is retained by a thin polyester stitching which holds the tows in place without affecting structural integrity.

Triaxial Fiberglass impregnates easily and is ideal for large glassing jobs focusing on strengthening a surface while adding minimal weight. Experience excellent results when used during wet lay-up, vacuum bagging, or infusion molding.

This cloth is sold by the yard or roll (106 yds) and is 50" wide.

VERY thick fiberglass

I found this glass mat to be too thick for my purposes. Unfortunately I ordered 6 square yards, way too much. It would be helpful to get a sample cutting before ordering. I had to disassemble the multiple layers of packaging to see what it was like, and now don't believe it could be returned as a result.

Thick and strong. Take your time.

Very strong and thick fiberglass. Only needed one layer. Was a little difficult to work with because of its thickness. However, I am confident in its strength. After initial laying, there is a deep woven pattern that fills easily with filler and thickener. This fabric was applied to 1/4 inch (old) plywood hull with multiple repairs. A thinner glass fabric would be adequate for other applications, but I like how this turned out with only one layer on this refurbish job. I used a lot of epoxy. JD has been uniformly excellent for mail order.

Bad batch

I ordered a second batch of this triaxle cloth this time it came folded instead of a roll. I have used this in the past and it was fine. This time it it was awful every foot or so it had ridges were the fabric was gathered in a big line all the way across the width . I had to try and piece around these defective arrears and the project did not go well. I spent a lot of time and effort plus the epoxy resin to try and do the job. Will have redo the project to get it right. Can provide pictures if any body is interested.

i used this to install a transom on a Mirage River racer tunnel boat. we have literally beat this boat to death in rough water and have not seen any stress or cracking since the repair. I will defiantly be using this again when I install stringers and transom on my Hydrostream Vector.

Great product great price

For the price this is an amazing product. I used it for building skis and it was easy to work with and very stiff when cured. I also loved how wide it came, and how few meters I needed to order to get the amount I needed.

Questions

1 - 9 of 9 Questions

Q: How many layers of this would be recommended for this product (triaxial) when building a deck skin on top of foam core such as divinycell or core cell? Would one be enough or should it be two?

3 Answers

A: There are several factors to consider. Longer spans require more layers (Both Top and Bottom). The thickness of the ""core"" is the second factor. Are there any other supports as ""Ribs"" or ""Stringers"". It takes about 5-layers to achieve 1/4"" thickness. For many applications this thickness is very good. Hope this helps.

Q: How much resin does this cloth absorb per sq yard or foot, of either your 5:1 or 2:1 epoxy resin? I'm wanting to calculate how much resin to buy.

3 Answers

A: A general rule of thumb for Triaxial is 1.75 times the weight of the cloth per square yard.

Q: How does this compare to 1708?

1 Answer

A: It has an extra layer of threads bisecting the biaxial weave, adding extra strength along that axis.

Q: Project I'm working on is reskinning a foam core rudder. If this material is used as main load bearing material, would an outer layer of chopped strand mat be recommended to reduce print through and improve surface finish in a vacuum bagged installation? Do you offer an epoxy compatible chopped strand mat material?

1 Answer

A: This material could work for the load bearing cloth material. The chopped strand matt part doesn't really fit the application.

Q: How does product compare to S glass for use as a canoe skidplate? I will be hand wetting a single layer with West Systems G Flex 650 epoxy.

1 Answer

A: It is thicker and will provide strength and reduce flex. For a skidplate I'd look at Kevlar cloth, much more abrasion resistant.
