Q: null I am looking to build a fiberglas inbound pool with plywood walls and concrete floor. the pool will be rectangular. basic book shape. !. how many layers of fiberglass will i need. 2. what type of resin would i use 3. what fiberglass will give me the best strength. thanks Matt

A: Sorry, but I can't advise you on this type of constuction other than to say that Fiberglass will not be adding strength to the structure. That will depend on the frame. The fiberglass is just a waterproof barrier. You will probably want to use a 5:1 epoxy with several layers of fiberglass cloth.

Q: null I'm rebuilding the transom on my 1975 SeaCraft SF20 center console. I removed the old transom from the outside and the old skin is unusable. Approximately how many layers and how much resin will I need to rebuild the outer skin? The original was approx 1/4"" thick. The transom is 80"" wide. Thanks

A: Biaxial Fabric with mat backing. Fabric Weight = 24 oz. (per square yard). Single layer thickness = .042"" (average of multiple layers applied using hand layup method). To build up 1/4"" of biaxial cloth with mat backing, you would need approximately 6 layers. (.042"" x 6 = .252 or approximately 1/4""). One square yard of 17 oz. biaxial cloth needs 51 oz. (17 oz. x 3) of mixed epoxy for wet out.

Q: null I am replacing the transom on a 17' Aquasport, I plan to bond ply to the inside of the transom which remains, then do lay ups of 17 oz followed by i2 oz and some lighter cloth to finish. the total would be 1/4 inch, and it will wrap around the top, which I'm thinking I would need to grind a taper into the new lay up and use a light cloth to cap the transom.,Any suggestions for lay up schedule, cloth weight & quantity, epoxy resin quantity?

A: That sounds fine, you will need a gallon kit of resin. You can do all your layups at once. I would cover it after all the layers with peel-ply release fabric that will leave a smooth finish. Taper the existing edge areas so you can overlap the cloth to tab it in so when you fill and sand it will be even with the existing fiberglass.

Q: null I was considering using three layers of 6 oz biaxial to wrap a new plywood core rudder for a 24' sailboat since I believed the 6 oz would be easier to work around the rounded edges of the 1 1/2"" thick rudder. Will I have trouble if go with 17 oz biaxial instead?

A: The woven cloth will be much easier to wrap around a 1 1/2"" radius than the biaxial cloth. If you wet the biaxial out first it will make the bend easier.

Q: null I am considering this cloth instead of the regular 6-7 oz. cloth for added strength on a 16' skiff am building. Would you ay this would be suitable? The boat is a Glen-L Center Console with raised bulwark. Thanks, Gary

A: will certainly be stronger, issue I had with it was it took some effort to get all of it saturated when laying it out but worked well then covered it with a 4oz just to get a smoother finish (I used it to make a trailer lid)

Q: null Is the $8.65 /yard for a running piece 50__quote__ wide and 36__quote__(1 yard) long or is it for a square yard? A 3' piece of 50__quote__ fabric is actually 1.31 square yards would then cost $11.33 per square yard. Could someone please clarify? Thanks

A: I'm not sure. I bought this small piece to do some small fiberglass patching. I suggest that you ask the Jamestown staff who would have a clerar answer for you. Dave.

Q: null how easy is it to wet out this cloth with epoxy resin?
11 years ago1 Answer
A: It is a little trickier than the regular cloth for sure biggest thing i found was just had to go a little slower and once it started saturating it was easy but the initial __quote__wetting__quote__ was definetely different not harder. Flat area or gradual curve, okay- sharp curve or edge real pain. This was the first time, i had laid glass in over 20 yrs in October. It was for a lid for my trailer. My layup was 2 layers of 17 oz biaxail with about 80 % overlap (second piece much easier) then 2 layers 4oz cloth (super easy) with medium hardner epoxy
