Product Details

TotalBoat TotalBuff Rubbing Compound is a fast-cut marine polish that is ideal for removing stubborn oxidation and restoring your hull's original color. This liquid polishing compound is designed to remove 600/800 wet sanding scratches from gelcoat and previously painted surfaces.

TotalBuff is the first step in a three-step buffing system, and should be applied using a polisher and wool pad. Follow up with a coat of TotalBoat TotalShine for maximum gloss and an outstanding finish. For superior protection and longevity, a final coat of TotalBoat Premium Boat Wax is recommended.

Info & Guides
At Jamestown, many boaters ask us what we recommend when it comes to buffing. We take our cues from the experienced boatyards that shared with us their multi-step system. Once you see the results for yourself, we are sure you will agree.

First off, let it be noted that these compounds are essentially liquid abrasives that are used to lightly sand or polish your hull. For more faded or "oxidized" hulls, pay close attention to the compounding step in order to restore the hull's original color.

Step 1: Compounding
For faded topsides, we recommend starting with TotalBuff Rubbing Compound. It works towards bringing back the hull's original color and revitalizing that ugly faded look. Apply with a polisher and a pad.

Step 2: Finishing
The next step is to follow up with an application of TotalShine Finishing Compound using a polisher and pad. TotalShine will grant a glossy, bright finish, as well as remove any micro scratches and swirl marks.

Step 3: Waxing
The final step is to protect the newly polished finish with a wax like TotalBoat Premium Boat Wax. It's important to seal and protect the finish with a good wax to maintain that glossy look. Any buff cloth or pad to hand apply the wax will suffice.

The best rubbing compound i've ever used . I thought is was expensive , but I was very wrong .I brought the black hull gelcoat back on a 18 year old boat. Not even the old faithful Dupont came close.

Q: null I asked a question earlier about new Painted alexseal paint. Most of boatworks today talks about gel coat repairs. If I wetsand with 1500 and then use totalbuff and total shine that's all I need….or should I use the 3 part.

A: Buffing paint is pretty much the same as buffing gelcoat. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V7eTydzr5n4&t=91s

A: Why do you ask customers like me to answer questions that JD is much more likely to be able to answer? You all would surely know if your products are available in the UK!

Q: null If my boat has medium to heavy oxidation, do it need to wet sand it first with 800, 1000 or 2000 paper? Or will the total buff compound and variable speed buffer be enough?

2 Answers

A: Here's the rub: You want to use the least aggressive method to remove the oxidation. It's likely the Total Buff will work but the only way to know for sure is to try a spot. If the Total Buff doesn't take off the oxidation, work your test spot with 2000 grit and work your way lower until you get to a grit that removes the oxidation. Then sand the whole hull with that grit. Now try a spot with the Total Buff again to see if it buffs out the sanding. If it doesn't sand again with finer grits until you get to a finish that is buffable. Make sure you thoroughly dewax the hull with TotalBoat Dewaxer and surface prep before buffing and sanding.

Q: null What is the typical coverage in sq. ft. or boat length for the rubbing compound and the accompanying wax TotalWax

1 Answer

A: One container of each will do a 28 - 30' boat depending on how tall the hull is.
