Great results

Used the gray TotalProtect to coat a new aluminum fuel tank. Rolled on very easily laid down well. Prepped the bare aluminum with the Total Boat Etch Wash. I've got a lot of confidence that this will give the tank the protection it needs.

Worked like a champ

First experience ever with bottom painting. Hull (23' Whaler) was unpainted so I followed the instructions, sanding with a DA, and laid multiple coats of barrier coat thinned at 10% with TB Epoxy Primer Thinner 200. Got lucky with a cool cloudy day—pot life was long enough that I was able to knock out three full coats (followed by two full coats of TB Spartan bottom paint). Made for a very long day but the job looks absolutely professional.

It was pretty awesome

We needed to barrier coat and bottom paint our forty-year-old 36-foot trawler in one day and we chose this and the Underdog ablative. It's gotten very hot where we are in southwest FL, so we knew it was going to be a race once we got started. At dawn we were wiping and taping and about an hour and a half later, I boxed the two gallons of ablative and then mixed the first gallon of barrier coat. Let it sit twenty minutes, thinned it 10%, and started applying as soon as the thinner was mixed well. Ultimately, we started at the starboard bow and worked our way back, then up the port side to the port bow and then around again. We ran out of barrier coat about 2/3 of the way up the port side during the first coat, so we mixed another batch and continued around for two full coats - admittedly a little thinner on the second one. The weather cooperated and the timing was perfect as we started the second coat the first was thumbprint tacky. As luck would have it, the second coat was also thumbprint tacky once we got back around to the port bow and we were able to immediately start the ablative application. I did NOT thin the ablative and it went on much thicker - but also easier. With two of us working - one cutting and one rolling, switching out roles several times, we were able to do the entire bottom in about three hours. If I were to do it again, I would recruit another person (or two) to add the ability to either do both sides at once or to swap in and out so we could rest/eat as we didn't finish until after 4 PM. But I was impressed with the fact that this barrier coat did in fact have a very long pot life even in the 97 degree heat that day and it was applying at the same thickness it was when we started all the way through.

it sets up pretty quick even in cooler temps. Not so easy to sand. Loads up the paper pretty fast.

Used the Total Boat Epoxy Primer Thinner 200 with both applications for use with a roller. It mixes easily and the pot life is more than enough.

Great barrier paint. Dries very hard which I am glad of, but I did not achieve as fine a finish as I wanted using to the mohair hair blend roller that came with the kit. I had to do a lot of sanding before my second coat and make my second coat using a 3/16 mohair roller achieving a much improved finish.

Q: null What do I do if I sanded an epoxy repair before washing off the amine blush ?

1 Answer

A: Hi there, I recommend washing the surface with warm water and a mild soap. This will help remove the amine blush.

Q: null What is the actual recoat time? I understand there is a fluctuation based on temperature but I'm not comfortable with the time being described some ware between a sticky thumb and 60 days. Understanding that re-sanding is not an option, would you say if the second coat happens within a day or two at 70-80 degree temperatures, sanding would be unnecessary? Please advise,

1 Answer

A: I have recoated without sanding in a similar scenario to yours without any issues. You can sand between coats with 80 grit sandpaper. The tech sheet is correct about recoat times. You have up to 60 days to recoat without sanding. The critical point comes when you paint over the primer. Some bottom paints may be applied without sanding as long as the primer is till tacky. Some water based and specialty bottom paints and virtually all topside paints will require sanding prior to application. Q: null I have a 5 year old fiberglass red Rv trailer that has oxidized terribly in the sun. Is this a good product to use on it? What prep is necessary? And.. how much is needed to cover a 20' Winnebago Micro Mini?

1 Answer

A: If you are going to prime and paint it is a good primer for that. You will need to clean the surface well, sand with 120 grit, clean then apply the Total Protect.

Q: null I purchased a quart of Total Protect primer, and I have two questions: 1) the application instructions talk about fiberglass, which is usually a polyester resin. I am using the primer on a wooden boat, with a fiberglass sheathing set in epoxy, not polyester. Does that make any difference to the application instructions? And, 2) the instructions printed on the quart container are tiny - are they available to download so I can print them in an easier to read size?

1 Answer

A: Total Protect can be used on polyester resin or epoxy resin. On epoxy be sure it is cured and wash with water to remove any possible amine blush, then sand with 80 grit, clean with acetone or denatured alcohol. More detailed instructions are available on our webside in the Technical Data sheet, here is the link: https://doc.jamestowndistributors.com/userportal/pdfs/TotalBoat/totalboat-totalprotect-tds-6.30.20.pdf

Q: null Is this the correct product to use for an older dinghy with some cracking and crazing of the gel coat. Many thanks for your reply.

A: This could be the correct solution provided you have the tools and patience for the 2 part paint which needs meticulous preparation before applying. These products will give a long lasting durable result.  ?

Q: null I exceeded the pot life by a few hours, but the epoxy primer/barrier coat was still the same viscosity as when originally mixed. This might be to late to ask, but will it adhere properly?

1 Answer

A: Typically TotalProtect has not exceeded it's pot life until it becomes too thick to apply. The pot life for TotalProtect is anywhere from 2.5 hours to 10 hours depending on the temperature and the size of the batch. As long as it was well mixed at a 3:1 ratio it should harden and adhere.
