A bit disappointed
I used this on a sanded section of aluminum diamond plate. The underside coated fine but after sanding and etching the top the coating would attach itself and I ended up with a mess. I did call and ask if sand blasting would be better but I was told to sand to 220 and etch then apply. The bottom side turned out great. The top not so much.

Total Protect Primer & Barrier Coat

Great coverage , adheres very well . I used it as a top coat after i filled gouges and scratches in the gel coat on the bottom of the boat , It's been on for a little over a month and is holding up, doesn't stain easily from the intercoastal water . I don't anticipate any issues with this product

Don't know whether I'm more impressed with the product or Jamestown Dist. The product was well packed, shipped quickly, and, heck they even threw in roller, tray, tape, and draping.

Worked great to cover crazing
Covered entire hull (top and bottom) of 1966 Boston Whaler that had light crazing all over it. Used Wet edge on top of hull after and bottom paint after cured. Paint went on well and has held up great. Boat was kept in salt water last year from may to sept and had no issues.

Totalfair/totalprotect

After repairing the spider cracks in the gel coat with totalfair I prepped the gel coat and applied totalprotect. After a week I sanded and reapplied gel coat. The product had very good adhesion to the old gel coat and the new gel coat went on with no issues. I would definitely recommend this product.

Over priced and dose not work
I am restoring a 13' Boston Whaler. put three new lawyers of 6 oz fiberglass to the entire bottom and up the sides. This is my first attempt at using gelcoat so I called JT to ask what would be the best primer to use with the air dryer gelcoat they have. I was told to use the total boat total protect epoxy so I pushed a gallon kit with the gel coat. First off they add in a roller that is for epoxy paints it is one of the cheapest rollers ever made if you know and thing about paint don't use a roller that has lint that you can pluck out of it. I used a vacuum to remove the lint thinking this roller should work it is included with the primer. The boat is upside down and I was repairing the bottom so I rolled it out right away the paint dose not flow but I figured it would flatted out after a little bit. Not the case the entire bottom and sides of the boat looked like a 1960s popcorn ceiling I had to sand the entire boat down to the new fiber glass. Think I made a bad choice using a roller I ordered one more gallon with some thinner and sprayed the boat with a spray gut with a 2.5 nozzle the stuff is very thick and needs to be miked with a paint mixer before using a paint stick will not do it. spraying it went good and was happy with the results. I let it set for a couple of days and sanded it by hand with 80 grit as recommended. Now i was going to attempt the gelcoat spraying it with the same 2.5 nozzle but thought to do a small test run first so I taped off a 12"" x12"" spot on the bottom of the boat. to set the spray on my gut I had a small sheet of PVC trim stock used for houses I adjusted my spray and sprayed the small spot. I let cure over night and to fine out gelcoat will not cure over this primer the scrap piece I used to adjust my spry was stuck to the PVC like it was made like that the gelcoat on the boat was as wet as if I just sprayed it on. This stuff might work if you are slapping on bottom paint but do not use it if it is something you will see above water

It worked

I purchased the primer and was sent the kit they included a Rollie for epoxy paint do not use it it is a cheap full of lint roller. Order the thinner for the primer it dose not flow at all when rolled on I'm going to order thinner and spray on the next coat Automotive paint would have been a better choice. I have used in the past with better results

I attempted to put this product on with the supplied 3/8 nap roller only to have a popcorn texture remain after drying. I've tried thinning with the 200, tried foam rollers, mohair rollers, and just about every other roller out there along with ""tipping"" and I still end up sanding most the product off in order to get a smooth priming surface. Out of the 3 gallons I bought for my 21 foot sailboat, I sanded at least 2 gallons off to just get it smooth. Now my barrier is super thin and I actually have to patch some spots that weren't I would've probably been better off if I had just roughed up enough for a primer and then put on bottom paint. The product label says to use a 3/8 nap, probably to help you put on 3 times too much in order to sand it down smooth. Very disappointed and frustrated. I appreciate how fast Jamestown gets products to me. I just feel like this one needs improved or better instructions.

I used on smaller boat to test for my 23' and I'll use it
4 years ago
I used it on bottom of a sunfish to get practice with it before using in my 1978 23' O'day. It rolled on well and sanded well. It dries quick, this is a small boat and by the time I got finished with the first coat it was dry enough to go back and put second coat. I sanded because I used the wet edge for the bottom since it will be trailered and not left in the water. I'm going to use it again on my O'day but put on a bottom paint.

Easy application, time will tell on quality

I used 4 gallons, alternating white/grey to barrier coat a 35' Pro-Line Express. One coat per gallon worked out just about perfectly. As some others have noted the white seems thinner and does not cover as well as the grey, if I were to do it again I would do more of the grey maybe even all 4 coats due to the better coverage. I used West System 800 7"" foam roller covers and they worked very well and applied very smoothly. They do start to degrade after about an hour. With 4 guys rolling at the same time it took about 30-45 minutes per coat and I switched out roller covers on every coat. Overall very easy to apply and was able to achieve a smooth finish with each coat. Only comment again would be the white being a little thinner and not covering as well.

Great Barrier Coating, Hard and Sandable AND flexible.
three coats left a tough finish. I was able to sand it to a smooth finish with 320 on a random orbital sander and is sanded easily. I had some left over after the last coat that hardened in the pain cup. I pulled that out and was able to verify that although extremely hard, it was flexible, almost like hard rubber. I'll have this in one of my upcoming videos on my Whaler restoration and will show how it sands easily, is very hard yet flexible. I'm extremely please with the Totalprotect barrier system!

Terrible product
I have used many epoxy coating systems. This by far the worst. At what seems a 90 percent solids properties coating, and using the supplied roller left a popcorn ceiling look that was unable to be tipped. Tipping produced clumps or product dragged to the side. Brushing left huge brush marks. Does it build thick, yes. Can you sand it? No. Not well. The can says 8 to 12 coats preferably but that is because you need to sand off 75% of that to get the finish flat enough to paint. Maybe i got an old can that was on the shelf for 10 years, i dont know. But this product i wouldnt use on a doghouse. This is the white barrier coat I am speaking of. The picture shows the pile of pits to fill after much time spent with 40 grit longboarding.

Ordered barrier paint, some arrived with no note about why, can not do the barrier coat as its layers of gray than white than gray finish with white. White arrived incomplete no gray. Emailed to find out whats happening with order to be told there's a back order of two week. No shipment would have been better than a portion. I could have cancelled order and purchased locally. Now stuck with waiting or paying return shipment.

Seems to be a good product
Just put the first three coats of Totalboat TotalProtect on my boat's hull. So far so good. A few things from my experience. I alternated between grey and white and found that the grey was, by far, more difficult to mix than the white. There seem to be are more solids in the grey and it requires much more effort to mix to a uniform consistency. Both seemed to cover at an equivalent rate and my boat (36' full keel sailboat) required a little less than a gallon - I do not know its' wetted surface area. I like the 3:1 mixing ratio and the fact that it is possible to put multiple coats on in a day ( 3 coats in a very long day) with the right weather conditions. I'll put the final two coats on once I get to the yard. Be aware of condensation on a sailboat's ballast, even in under 85% humidity. The four stars are due to inconsistency between colors (makes me wary) and the fact that I don't know how it performs.

I would buy this again if using Gel Coat over Total Fair
5 years ago
Per The Data Sheet provided for Total Fair … It would be necessary to use a "" Epoxy Barrier "" before applying Gel Coat over Total Fair, I didn't believe it , questioned it, having to buy more materials to complete my transom rebuild, So not wanting any kind of a failure at this point in finishing steps of this transom job I did buy and use the "" Total Protect "" as prescribed. It was true that it was necessary, I applied the Total Protect to the transom and rolled over to the interior side of the transom a couple inches where I intend to paint. When applying the many coats of Gel Coat I did the same rolling it over to the interior side, and true to their word where I passed the point of no Total Protect with the Gel Coat it did not cure, that area stayed very tacky, didn't set properly. Was able to use Acetone to remove the sticky stuff, no problem. Bottom Line … Do use "" Total Protect "" over "" Total Fair "" before using Gel Coat, believe your Data Sheet !

Great stuff

Works like the big name products at a fraction of the price. Do pay close attention to the window for topcoat... you want only a *hard* fingerpress to leave a fingerprint the least-cured area, else you'll get a little crazing in your topcoat. I topcoated just a bit to soon... a few of my least-cured areas crazed a bit. But since my topcoat was bottom paint, no biggie.

After spending 18 months using orbital sanders to carefully remove the original gel coat layers down to the fiberglass, you can imagine how nervous we were about making the right decision on barrier coat. This was an excellent choice and we are 100% pleased with the result.

Q: What is the actual recoat time? I understand there is a fluctuation based on temperature but I'm not comfortable with the time being described some ware between a sticky thumb and 60 days. Understanding that re-sanding is not an option, would you say if the second coat happens within a day or two at 70-80 degree temperatures, sanding would be unnecessary? Please advise,
10 months ago1 Answer
A: I have recoated without sanding in a similar scenario to yours without any issues. You can sand between coats with 80 grit sandpaper. The tech sheet is correct about recoat times. You have up to 60 days to recoat without sanding. The critical point comes when you paint over the primer. Some bottom paints may be applied without sanding as long as the primer is till tacky. Some water based and specialty bottom paints and virtually all topside paints will require sanding prior to application. Q: I purchased a quart of Total Protect primer, and I have two questions: 1) the application instructions talk about fiberglass, which is usually a polyester resin. I am using the primer on a wooden boat, with a fiberglass sheathing set in epoxy, not polyester. Does that make any difference to the application instructions? And, 2) the instructions printed on the quart container are tiny - are they available to download so I can print them in an easier to read size?
a year ago1 Answer
A: Total Protect can be used on polyester resin or epoxy resin. On epoxy be sure it is cured and wash with water to remove any possible amine blush, then sand with 80 grit, clean with acetone or denatured alcohol. More detailed instructions are available on our webside in the Technical Data sheet, here is the link: https://doc.jamestowndistributors.com/userportal/pdfs/TotalBoat/totalboat-totalprotect-tds-6.30.20.pdf

Q: I exceeded the pot life by a few hours, but the epoxy primer/barrier coat was still the same viscosity as when originally mixed. This might be to late to ask, but will it adhere properly?
a year ago1 Answer
A: Typically TotalProtect has not exceeded it's pot life until it becomes too thick to apply. The pot life for TotalProtect is anywhere from 2.5 hours to 10 hours depending on the temperature and the size of the batch. As long as it was well mixed at a 3:1 ratio it should harden and adhere.
