Problem with proper mounting of Scupper.

Bought a pair to put on my refurbished 18' Eastern. Confused as how to correctly mount them and as a result my transom floods as soon as I step to the rear . JD photos show conflicting proper mounting shots where gasket is 360 degrees off from one photo to another. Which is it? Went to SEACHOICE products web site (manufacturer) and mounting instructions equally confusing. Will try and change but adhesive may result in breakage. May go back to regular flaps if not solved soon! At this point I would not recommend.

Excellent Product and service!

I have had other ball scuppers, flap scuppers, and plugs in place of scuppers. These are the BEST! My 250 pound fishing buddy used to wear wading shoes in the stern of my 172 Scout, but no more! These scuppers work great!

Not very good

I had this product installed by a marine center. After using my boat I found that this type of scupper did not stop water from entering the boat. I do not like this product and will be replacing it with something else.

Questions

Q: null I'm looking to replace the self bailer on a Force 5 sailboat. They don't make the part anymore. It goes in the floor of the deck just behind the centerboard trunk. The old bailer worked like this gadget. It had a float ball. The only difference that I can see is the old one had a rubber stopper that plugged it from the upper side when not using. Surely I could find a stopper that would fit this? Do you think this would work?

Q: null Will this valve fit over the Attwood flipper valve?

1 Answer

A: should mount in the same place after removing attwood valve. I would use a small amount of marine sealant in screw holes. or seal old mounting holes if they do not match new ones.

Q: null if I overload my boat and they go underwater will they seal out the water? ijust removed the drain tubes on a 78 McKee its almost 2 inches thick do you buy 3 inch tubes and flange both ends?how much tube do you need to stick through to make the flange?can you squish it right to the transom?the old ones were just stuck in the hole and cut flush.how can you permanently seal one below the waterline?

A: Yes both ends need to be flanged, and Jamestown sells the flanging tool. I sealed the tube holes with epoxy and then generously used 5200 when I inserted the tube and flanged it. You need about a quarter of an inch for the flange. One end will already be flanged. I insert the tubes and mark them for cutting, and cut them with a dowel inside the tube so that is does not compress. There is no good answer for the tubes under water. I have used the ping pong scuppers and they are OK, but they get clogged a lot, then they are wedged open. Atwood makes a duckbill scupper that some people like.

A: Probably not...these are made for boats that have a self bailing deck and or low transom in the back. Most of the time they are above the water line. Best, Guy

Q: null Will this work on a 16ft Carolina Skiff?

A: Hi Dan, I would asume they would work...I have an 18' Palm Beach and the size of the bailing hole is almost a perfect match....the only problem is that the predilled holes in the scuttles don't exactly line up with the 4 pre existing holes from the scuttle flaps I had...They are in but about 30 degrees away from pointing straight down....still get very little water if any pushing back inside. I have gotten use to the gentle clicking sound of the balls moving in and out of place. The seem real sturdy...will just to have to drill 4 new off set holes in the scuttles rather than in the transom. Thanks Guy
