Silicon Bronze Wood Screws
These Silicon Bronze screws have cut threads and the full-bodied diameter shank desired by boatbuilders. Unlike rolled thread screws with their reduced shank--these screws have a shank diameter that is the same size as the outside of the threads. This completely fills the clearance hole normally drilled for the shank thus creating a waterproof seal. These wood screws have a square drive recess to help prevent cam out.

The best I found
These are the best screws I found. They aren't perfect. You need a lot of down force to keep them from stripping out. They are designed for boat building so if your outer boat is thick then you probably need to drill it out to a larger diameter to get it too pull tight.

They are great but!

My recommendation is, these screws like other soft metal screws need to have a steel screw run in first before you install the bronze screw. I had trouble with them stripping out. Also you might want to consider running a larger pilot hole thru the first board to keep the screws from grabbing that section and not pulling joints tight. Yes, I did use counter sinks with the correct drill bit and length but still had issues.

They do what they are supposed to do.

Silicone bronze is what they recommend for boat building. They are quite expensive and the square heads do strip out pretty easily, so pre-drilling is a must. That said. they do what they are supposed to do.

Screws are not sharp

These are the first order for screws from Jamestown and probably my last. These screws are very dull and take a lot of effort to screw in my mahogany.

square drive silicon bronze screws

I've used the square drive SB screws in both boats I've built and find them a great investment. They get pricier as time passes, but always a good investment.

nothing beats a good screw.....

THE SQUARE DRIVE HEAD IS THE ONLY WAY TO GO. Even with square drive these screws won't survive a ham fisted driver. Best to learn some touch on a power driver or get used to throwing away pricey screws. Once mastered, screws are durable and very appropriate for marine environment. I keep an assortment of sizes for a variety of uses.

So much easier to drive these soft screws without stripping the heads as has been my experience with Freerson heads.

Q: Do you sell bronze wood screws in any less quantity than boxes of 100? I could use 1/2 box
3 years ago1 Answer
A: Hey John, Most supply houses these days can't supply less than box size orders of fasteners as it just isn't cost effective. We purchase a fair amount of bronze fasteners for JD and the quality has always been good. Good luck with your project Hank H

Q: Do these screws require a tapered drill bit or straight drill bit?
13 years ago21 Answers
A: I like to use a tapered bit. It provides room for the screw close to the head so you prevent splitting what you are trying to fasten while giving holding surface for the threads. Don't forget to set your countersink on the bit before you drill.
