Brass is surprisingly strong but a very soft metal. Brass screws also demand a carefully sized pilot hole to avoid installation breakage. Brass is the traditional choice for a non-corrosive metal and provides a classic look and feel to any project.
Info & Guides
Brass Wood Screws
Flat Head Phillips Drive
These Brass Wood Screws have cut threads and the full-bodied diameter shank desired by boatbuilders. Unlike rolled thread screws with their reduced shank--these screws have a shank diameter that is the same size as the outside of the threads. This completely fills the clearance hole normally drilled for the shank thus creating a waterproof seal.

I'm refinishing and tricking up an old wooden rowboat. I have used about 200 of these screws in mahogany. They look great with this wood.

The center post of these screw is wider at the tip then the center. This weekness caused multiple screws to sheered off the tip while driving them.

Quality to count on

With fewer resources available, it is reassuring to know Jamestown Distributors is a source of quality products that will service those of us who continue to seek the best tools and supplies to address creating and maintaining traditional boats. The threads remind me of those I used when screws weren't mass produced. Lubricating screw after drilling pilot hole ensures smooth entry into the wood, in my case applying a rub rail to teak.

We particularly like the excellent price because it enables us to sell a high quality product to our clients at a good price whilst at the same time getting a very good profit margin.Because we sell to the building restoration industry, it is important that we have a product that is both of high quality and suitable for the restoration of old buildings.

Q: What does # 4 or # 8 mean -- a way to measure diameter of shank? thanks, D.
12 years ago1 Answer
A: Hello David, I believe the 'screw number' is relative to both diameter and shank. On the JD website you can search the type of screw you need and on the lower left side of page - click __quote__how to's__quote__ (wood screw sizing). It's a very comprehensive list of screw numbers VS actual dimensions.

Q: I am looking for #3-inch wood screws which would fit standard door hinges and strike plates. What would you suggest? Thanks for a reply!

A: Hi- I am a woodworker and an owner of a 1948 wooden boat so I am constantly on the 'prowl' for hardware and fasteners for projects. I find that often times I end up looking first at Jamestown, and finally ordering from them. Their quality is a lot better then most places and customer service is tops. I'm not sure why you are using 4__quote__ screws on a door hings unless it is a replacement and the whole is already enlarged. I would pre-drill and use a product like akempucky (or paraffin or soap) to pre-lubricate. If you are able go for something other then a slot head to get a better set to the screw. I hope this info helps! nate bacon Waynesboro, PA
