I questioned whether the new cable would snake through the existing route. The new cable is very supple compared to the old brittle plastic I was replacing. It made pulling the cable through the under floor space easy.

Q: I have a 2004 Scout 175 Sportfish that my steering has failed, I have not found a serial number on the large cable but on 2 smaller ones I saw Teleflex cc63318 31201. I have repowered the boat with a Yamaha f115 replacing the original Yamaha 90 2stroke. Which steering kit do I need?
11 months ago1 Answer
A: Measure cable routing path in a center console boat as follows: A = Center line of the wheel down to where it enters the rigging tunnel. (inches). B = Dash to transom (inches). C = Gunwale to cable connection at centered tiller (inches). Add A + B + C + 6"", and round up to the next foot. Order that length of cable.

Q: Hi I have a Safe T steering system on a 1998 Key West Boat. It appears the bolt passes through the cable and into the tiller plate without any washers or bushings. It rattles when idling and can be moved up and down easily on the bolt. Should this steering have a bushing kit to take some of the play or slop out of the engine side of the cable, where it attaches to motor? If so, what kit for a 17' boat ?

A: I am not entirely familiar with your issue but this much I know. The teleflex website was very informative about fitting a system. There are id numbers stamped in cable up near helm which will help you identify the correct cable.I followed those numbers and replacement fit perfectly.

Q: I installed the cable in the steering the wrong way. With the pin pulled, the cable does not want to release as I turn the wheel. How do I get it to release?
4 years ago1 Answer
A: I believe that helm is designed to accept the cable from either side. Keep turning the helm until the cable is pushed out of the helm. If it is jamming up there is probably some load being placed on the cable end due to misalignment. The cable should be perfectly parallel to the exit point. If the helm is still in the dash board, you may have to remove it do gain better access and take the load off the cable. If that doesn't work, contact Teleflex Tech support at 610-495-7011
