Product Details

TotalBoat Traditional 5:1 Epoxy Resin is suitable for a wide range of boatbuilding and repair projects. This versatile epoxy resin is designed for use with our TotalBoat Fast, Slow, Tropical, and Crystal Clear Hardeners, but is also 100% compatible with all leading traditional marine 5:1 epoxy systems.

Traditional epoxy resin bonds with fiberglass, reinforcing fabrics, wood, and metals. When combined with any additional fillers, TotalBoat resin creates an excellent adhesive, filleting, and fairing compound. It cures to a high-strength, plastic solid with excellent moisture resistance. Once cured, it can be sanded and shaped.

Wets-out and bonds easily with fiberglass & other fabrics. It has excellent thin-film characteristics to easily flow out and self-level, making any laminating job easy.

Includes Resin ONLY. Hardeners must be purchased separately.

Note: TotalBoat 5:1 epoxy is also available in a 55 gallon drum, along with corresponding sizes of Fast and Slow hardeners. Please contact us for pricing.

Info & Guides
TotalBoat Traditional Epoxy Resin can be combined with any of our TotalBoat Hardeners (Fast, Slow, or Tropical Extra Slow) for exceptional results.

TotalBoat epoxy resin and hardeners are packaged and labeled according to group sizes (A, B, C) to ensure you have enough material for your project at the best value.

Clear-coating applications: The Traditional Epoxy Resin itself is clear, but when mixed with Fast, Slow, or Tropical Extra Slow Hardeners, it's amber in color and is not suitable for clear-coating applications.

TotalBoat epoxy resin and hardeners can be measured either by pouring or by using the calibrated TotalBoat pumps. TotalBoat dispensing pumps are specific to the type of TotalBoat Hardener you are using with TotalBoat Traditional Epoxy Resin (see details below).

For your safety, please be sure to wear protective gloves and eye, face, and clothing protection when working with epoxy resin and hardeners. Also, be sure your work area has adequate ventilation.

USING THE TOTALBOAT PUMPS FOR DISPENSING TOTALBOAT RESIN AND HARDENER

The procedure for dispensing TotalBoat Traditional Epoxy Resin and any of the TotalBoat Hardeners properly is ALWAYS ONE full pump of resin to ONE full pump of hardener. TotalBoat pump sets are calibrated to dispense the accurate mix ratio automatically.

IMPORTANT! Proper mix ratios are critical when working with epoxy resin and hardeners in order to achieve a proper cure.

★ TotalBoat Traditional Epoxy Resin used with either TotalBoat Fast Hardener or TotalBoat Slow Hardener are mixed at a ratio of 5 parts resin to 1 part hardener by volume.

★ TotalBoat Traditional Epoxy Resin can be used with TotalBoat Tropical Hardener mixed at a ratio of 3 parts resin to 1 part hardener by volume.

TotalBoat Epoxy Pump Sets are specific to the type of TotalBoat Hardener you are using with TotalBoat Traditional Epoxy Resin. The pumps are calibrated to dispense the proper mix ratio automatically.

  • Use the TotalBoat 5:1 Epoxy Pump Set when using TotalBoat Traditional Epoxy Resin with:
    • TotalBoat 5:1 Fast Hardener
    • TotalBoat 5:1 Slow Hardener
The TotalBoat 5:1 Epoxy Pump Set has a white pump for the resin, and a black pump for the hardener. These colors correspond to the cap colors for the resin and hardener.

Remember, the procedure for dispensing TotalBoat Traditional Epoxy Resin and Hardener properly is always ONE full pump of resin to ONE full pump of hardener.

When using the pump dispensing method for measuring TotalBoat Traditional Epoxy Resin and TotalBoat Fast Hardener or TotalBoat Slow Hardener, use ONLY the TotalBoat 5:1 Epoxy Pump Set. The TotalBoat 5:1 pumps are calibrated to dispense the accurate 5:1 mix ratio automatically. DO NOT use pumps from any other manufacturer; DO NOT use the TotalBoat 3:1 Epoxy Pump Set.

  • Use the TotalBoat 3:1 Epoxy Pump Set when using TotalBoat Traditional Epoxy Resin with:
    • TotalBoat Tropical Extra Slow Hardener
The TotalBoat 3:1 Epoxy Pump Set has a white pump for the resin, and a black cap with a green "3:1" sticker on top of the pump for the hardener. These colors correspond to the cap colors for the resin and hardener.

Remember, the procedure for dispensing TotalBoat Traditional Epoxy Resin and Hardener properly is always ONE full pump of resin to ONE full pump of hardener.

When using the pump dispensing method for measuring TotalBoat Traditional Epoxy Resin and TotalBoat Tropical Hardener, use ONLY the TotalBoat 3:1 Epoxy Pump Set. The TotalBoat 3:1 pumps are calibrated to dispense the accurate 3:1 mix ratio automatically. DO NOT use pumps from any other manufacturer; DO NOT use the TotalBoat 5:1 Epoxy Pump Set.

NOTE: Adding more hardener does not make the epoxy set faster. It throws off the mix ratio and will not cure properly.

PRIME THE RESIN AND HARDENER PUMPS BEFORE DISPENSING

Push down and release the head of each pump several times until you get a steady stream of liquid without any air pockets.

COLD WEATHER OPERATION: Cold temperatures make the viscosity of resin and hardeners increase and may require more force to pump thicker materials. Excessive force on either one of the plunger heads however, may also cause the pumps to break. Dispensing material in 60-70°F is recommended for optimal pump performance.

In cooler temperatures, warming the containers prior to pumping will decrease the epoxy viscosity, making materials pump more easily.

MIXING

After dispensing resin and hardener into a plastic mixing pot, use a wooden stir stick to mix thoroughly.

Tip: Wash cured epoxy with water, scrubbing lightly with a Scotch-Brite pad to remove any amine blush prior to overcoating or painting.

This was a small order of resin only. When I opened the package there were 8 color packages. I went to the JD website but couldn't find any information about how to mix them. JD should add a section about this.

Used on reclaimed wood coffee table

I wanted to use an indoor wood coffee table outside in covered patio area. Had no idea what I was doing but followed instructions and watched a few videos and the table turned out great. Going on a year outside with no problems at all. It did take longer to cure than I thought it should but likely just my lack of experience with epoxy.

I would not buy this product again

I have been using epoxy for 30 years, always West System. I like the TotalBoat line of products, so I thought I would try your epoxy. I bought a gallon last season and had about half a gallon left over. I mixed up a big batch, applied it and after several days found that it was still sticky. This not presented a problem that I never wanted to deal with: removing / sanding / covering a coating of semi-hardened epoxy. I thought, like West System, that the TotalBoat epoxy would stay viable for a number of years but in this case that was not true.

Questions

Q: i've used both total boat epoxy 1:2 mix and 1:5 mix for general contsruction on my wooden boats. I've never liked using the pumps, after a while they clog up etc.- so I've mixed by weight, which has worked fine, but now I read that you have to mix by volume not weight. If that is so, then it's much easier to mix a 1:2 mixture by volume than a 1:5 one. What is the difference between the two epoxies in terms of their use of construction, fairing with various powders, and filling fiberglass cloth? David Posner

1 Answer

A: Hello, you can mix either product by weight or by volume, either way is fine. They are similar products, but the high performance 2:1 has a bit more flex to it, making it a better choice for wooden boat applications. It also has slightly lower viscosity, making it ideal for wetting out fiberglass. Also the 2:1 will blush less and with the slow hardener only, it will cure clear. Both can be mixed with thickening agents such as silica or microballons. Thank you.

Q: What is coverage for 1 qt of trad 5:1 in square feet? I couldn't find it anywhere.

1 Answer

A: One quart will cover 6.4 square feet at a depth of 1/16"". Since it is primarily used as an adhesive for lamination, coverage will vary greatly depending on type of fillers or cloth being used.

Q: If I use this product to do under water line repairs, does it need a barrier coat before bottom paint?

1 Answer

A: I wouldn't think it needed. Be sure to scuff up before applying bottom paint though . ( barrier coat as far as I know is just epoxy which has been formulated to apply in thin coats)

1 Answer

A: This epoxy is not meant for finishing. You need to use boat paint (1 part or 2 parts) or gel coat that are engineered for finishing purpose.

Q: I live in the northeast (NY) and am looking for a product to fill in cracks on my mahogany deck (built in tables and benches). The product needs to hold up to about -10 degrees F to about 105 degrees F. At least 7 hours of sun a day. Would you recommend this product for this type of application?

2 Answers

A: EPOXY IS NOT SOMETHING THAT SHOULD BE EXPOSED TO THE SUN WITHOUT SOME KIND OF OVERCOAT PROTECTION. NOT SURE WHAT WOULD BE BEST.

Q: Can use use TotalBoat epoxy resin to repair dry rot? If so, do you coat it first with the resin and then use a filler mixed with the resin?

A: if you want the best product for rot repair get total boat penetrating epoxy, it's more expensive but is specifically formulated for the purpose of rot repair, if you want to get a cheaper alternative then regular will no doubt work to some degree

Q: I have just used total boat epoxy to bond fiberglass cloth to a fiberglass boat. I am wondering about cure time and what action is necassary between coats

3 Answers

A: Cure time depends on the hardener and the temperature which is listed on our website. You can do more than one lay up at a time if on a horizontal surface. If vertical you would want to wait until it is tacky before adding another.

Q: I have had the Total Boat 5:1 turn ""slushy"" on me two different times now. Just tossed out 1/2 gallon in the middle of a project that is now on hold. I have had some West system on the shelf up to 5 years that did not do this with identical storage conditions. Obvously one tries not to store an epoxy for so long. Is the plastic packaging affecting the shelf life of the Total Boat product? West system comes in a metal container.

1 Answer

A: The plastic container is far better when shipping as it can absorb impacts from shipping companies, and we get a lot of complaints that the metal cans rust, even rusting the lids on after a period of time. The plastic container does not react with the material inside at all. Both brands test for proneness to crystallization, and it can still happen to either brand's product over a duration. Storage conditions can significantly increase the chances of crystallization if not stored properly. The material can be brought back to the original state by creating a hot water bath of 140-150 deg F (DO NOT heat it higher) and place the container in the bath, leave it 1-2 hours, and it will return to its original state with the original working and cured properties. Please call one of our techs at (800) 497-0010 if you have any questions on this.

Q: What is the best top coat option for small table? Water or oil based Poly or Varnish? I want to keep the nice clear finish while providing some additional scratch and UV protection. Is a top coat even necessary?

5 Answers

A: Hi Dave, epoxy will make it more resistant to abrasion, but if you need clear, epoxy will not maintain that clarity in UV at all. A clear urethane system will be the best type of product for your application. Or, you can build up a level, clear surface with something like TotalBoat Tabletop epoxy and use a UV resistant urethane such as TotalBoat Envy or Interlux Perfection Plus as the finish coat.
