Product Details

VC Offshore is a hard, vinyl-based antifouling paint formulated for the serious racer. A unique blend of ingredients help to reduce friction and increase performance in both fresh and saltwater. This racing bottom paint creates a hard, smooth, burnishable, low-friction surface on high-performance or racing boats.

VC Offshore can be applied to fiberglass, wood and primed underwater metals (not recommended for application over aluminum surfaces without proper barrier coats). Polish after application for a low-profile finish with minimal drag. Choose from Red, Blue, or Black in Gallon sizes.

Not for use in California

Info & Guides

VC® Offshore is specially formulated for racing, sailing and performance power boats with a fluoro microadditive for a hard, smooth, low friction surface that can be burnished* to a very low profile. When polished, VC Offshore yields a very hard finish for maximum durability and reduced friction for increased performance. Typically (3) coats of VC Offshore should be applied.

Surface Preparation

BARE FIBERGLASS It is very important that bare fiberglass be properly prepared to prevent delamination of the antifouling paint. Remove mold release wax using one of the following Interlux products, Fiberglass Surface Prep YMA601V or Fiberglass Solvent Wash 202 following the product label instructions. Fill any surface imperfections with Interlux Watertite following the label instructions. Sand with 80 grade (grit) paper. Remove sanding residue.

BARE WOOD Sand with 80 grade (grit) paper. Remove sanding residue. Apply first coat reduced 10% with Special Thinner 216.

BARE METAL Sandblast, grind with a 36 grit grinding disc, or sand with 40-60 grit sandpaper. Bring the surface to a uniform, clean, bright metal surface. Remove sanding residue. Immediately apply one coat of Interprotect 2000E thinned 15-20%. Apply 3-4 additional coats of Interprotect 2000E, unthinned.

EPOXY COATED WOOD Prime with Interprotect 2000E/2001E.

PREVIOUSLY PAINTED SURFACES Remove, unless it is vinyl based. Scrape and sand old vinyl coatings which are not adhering, clean and dry surface. Remove antifouling paint in poor condition with Interstrip Semi-Paste 299E.

*BURNISHING: After the final coat of VC Offshore has cured, wet sand with 400 grade (grit) paper, removing any imperfections in the coat. Burnish with fine bronze wool until a shiny, super smooth finish is obtained. Apply an extra coat of VC Offshore if wet sanding or burnishing.

Q: null Hello, I have VC 17 in fresh water on currently moving the boat to salt water. Can VC offshore go over VC 17? Thanks!

A: I would strongly discourage you from applying even VC offshore over VC 17m. I did this and the paint developed adhesion problems after several seasons. Nothing sticks to 17m. And VC Offshore is a hard paint and is difficult to remove.

Q: null How much paint do I need to paint with a roller or spray paint (I assume the answers are different) 2 coats of VC Offshore on a J133, a 43 foot sailboat?

1 Answer

A: Ron, theoretical coverage is 300 sq feet per gallon of paint. The formula to calculate how much paint you will need is Length x Beam x 0.85 = Approximate Surface Area sq ft. This paint is recommended to be applied in 2-3 coats. This is paint is designed to be applied relatively thick 5mil wet. Here is a link to the tech data sheet where you will see tips for spraying. https://doc.jamestowndistributors.com/userportal/pdfs/Interlux/interlux_vc_offshore_racing_antifouling_tds.pdf

Q: null Can I apply VC offshore over VC 17? Will the Off Shore have better antifouling then the VC 17 for Lake Erie?

A: You can apply VC17 over VC Offshore, but cannot apply offshore over VC17. Offshore has comparable antifouling properties to VC17, but does not have to be applied yearly.
