Product Details

Interlux Compass Clear Varnish is a one-part polyurethane high-gloss varnish that is highly durable. It contains a unique combination of antioxidants, HALS and ultra-violet additives that provides a long lasting clarity and gloss. The polyurethane resin provides excellent resistance to abrasions, water and chemicals.

Compass Clear Varnish can be used on all internal and external woods and can also be applied directly to oily woods such as teak. The varnish's bright, clear, high-gloss finish allows the natural color of the wood to show through.

Info & Guides
Preparation

Bare Wood:

Sand surface smooth with 80 grit production sandpaper. Wipe clean. To enhance the appearance of the wood and fill porous, open grain, apply Interstain paste wood filler and stain according to label directions. Apply a sealer coat of varnish reduced 10-15% with the appropriate thinner.

Previously Varnished Surfaces:

In Good Condition - Sand old finish thoroughly with 120-150 grit production sandpaper, being sure not to sand through the paste wood filler stain. Wipe clean and finish with at least 2 coats of varnish. Sand between each coat and wipe clean using Brushing Liquid 333.

In Poor Condition - Remove finish to bare wood with Interlux Interstrip 299E. Follow directions for varnishing bare wood.

Bare Plywood:

Seal with one or two coats of Inter-Prime Wood Sealer Clear 1026 or Clear Wood Sealer YVA327/YVA328

Method

After sealer coat - apply 4-6 coats of full bodied varnish until a satisfactory finish is obtained. Sand the surface lightly between each coat with 220-320 grit sandpaper. Remove sanding dust by wiping clean with a rag that has been dampened with Brushing Liquid 333.

Hints

Thinner: Brush - use Brushing Liquid 333. Spray - use Special Thinner 216.

Thinning: Thin 10-15% on first coat and 10% maximum on subsequent coats.

Airless Spray: Pressure: 170 bar/2500 psi. Tip Size: 0.33-0.41 mm/13-16 thou.

overcoating

I called Interlux before using this in my centerboard case. I was able to overcoat it without sanding as long as the finish was tacky. I applied four coats in one day over epoxy resin. I waited for a day when the humidity was below 50 percent. Saved sanding in a difficult location

Extremely slow to dry.

I wish I had seen the other reviews before purchasing this. This varnish takes far too long to dry. It got ""tacky"" after 3-4 hours, and is still ""tacky"" almost 20 hours later! The varnish has to be sanded before another coat is applied, so you have to wait for the varnish to thoroughly dry. This varnish is just too impractical and inconvenient to use: maybe OK if you have an entire week to apply varnish in a protected location. The excessively long drying time also increases the likelihood of dust affecting the finish. Interesting that the can does not indicate drying time. I thought the color of the varnish in the can was darker than I expected for a ""clear"" varnish.

Slowwwww revisited

I wrote earlier this stuff dries slow...it does. So I feared it was going to sand like a rubber ball...I was wrong! It sands (dry 400g) (36 hours) later like a DREAM!! Not even a hint of gumming the paper. The clarity of this finish is amazing. It won't replace Captain's 1015, but it certainly has earned a place on my shelf. For reasons unknown, the second coat dried faster than the first.

Questions

Q: null Can this be applied directly to fiberglasses surfaced?

1 Answer

A: I have used Compass varnish on the Wood trim of my boat. it went on very nicely and built up very quickly. On some vertical surfaces I only used seven coats instead of the customary eight. I can't understand why one would want to varnish fiberglass, but it is a polyurethane product so I don't see why it wouldn't work as well as Brightside. I would be sure to sand first so it will have a __quote__tooth__quote__ to stick to. So far the Compass has held up well through the summer here in Florida, But then I usually varnish at least twice a year to keep from having to wood down. Hope this helps.

Q: null is it completely clear? Can i apply it over a 1 part paint like brightside or Totalboat Wet Edge?

A: It is clear varnish - so the wood grain shows through - but it does have a slight brown tint (at least where a run has gone over my paint ! ) So if this person is trying to get more gloss on paint - he should use clearcoat paint ( not varnish)

Q: null Can I apply Interlux compass clear over latex paint? If no, what kind of barrier do I need to put over the latex before applying compass clear. One thought is a coat of oil base paint. Yes or No? I am an interior designer using this on an interior house application. Regular paint stores do not provide a 95% gloss product so I always resort to marine products when needing a high gloss. Please advise
