Info & Guides

NOTE: Thixo cartridges have a slightly offset nozzle that fits most, but not all, caulk guns. Caulking applicators used with Thixo need to have a hole large enough for the mixing tip; cartridges won't fit applicators with only a small hole for the nozzle. For best results, use a caulk gun with an 8 to 1 thrust ratio or higher.

do not buy

I got halfway through the tube and was out of product! Cut it open to see what was going on and found a spacer or what could be called a slug that cheats you out of epoxy; Also most of the product did not dry after 2 days so I had to dig it out with a wire wheel. It was a mess.

Great product designed for a specific application. A little pricey for amount of usable product. You don't get a full tube of product and are instructed to waste the first squeeze out of the tube. I've used the brown wood color product (currently out of stock) with much success.

Thixo on my land based yatch....

Having used this product on a few sail boats it has always worked as planned. I used this Thixo material to extend a counter top in my kitchen where l needed a good bond along with pocket hole screws. When planning to use this tubed material, remember the tube is not full due to the way it is stored within the tube.

I am using thixo to bond aluminum. It works very well, certainly comparable to mig welding but easier and safer.

Maybe for a small job.

Your only getting by volume a half a tube of product. Works out to about $50 bucks for a tube of mixed epoxy. Too costly for this sailor.

Questions

1 - 10 of 13 Questions

Q: Would this epoxy work well as a filler in a drilled hole of wood? I want to drill stripped out motor mount bolt hole in wood runner and fill it back in with something that will adhere to the wood to bolt back down engine mount .

1 Answer

A: This is good for filling holes, however for something like a motor mound with heat and vibration you may be better off with a mix of 2:1 epoxy and milled fibers for greater strength.

Q: Will Thixo bond to copper?

1 Answer

A: Probably if you ruff up the surface with some 80 grit sandpaper. Would probably good to do a test piece first. Hope this helps.

Q: If using Thixo fast Cure without the mixing tip should there be a 50/50 ratio of what comes out of the cartridge or 2/1? If 2/1 how do you know which is the resin and which is the hardener?

4 Answers

A: I have used it 50/50 without the mixing tip with excellent results. Just make sure you mark the tube cap and return it to the same orientation when sealing it up so you don't activate the material in the tip. Fred

Q: What is the shelf life of Thixo Fast cure after the cartridge has been half used assuming care was taken in replacing the stopper and cap? Is it still good as long as it comes out of the cartridge readily? Thanks

1 Answer

A: Typically epoxy has a 12 month shelf life. As long as it dispenses, it should be good, however if it's really old you should try a test mix first.

Q: I have some Thixo Fast Cure and some Total Boat High Performance Resin with slow hardener. I want to lay some fiberglass mat and wet it out with the High Performance resin with slow hardener and then add a layer of the Thixo fast cure to set in a piece of balsa for a deck repair. Will those two resin products be compatible? Thanks

2 Answers

A: I have used quit a bit of the thixo line, but I have not used the high performance epoxy system. If you let the resin set up on the mat, you will have to make sure that it is blush free and sanded to give some tooth for the thixo to adhere to and there should be no compatibility issue. If you want it to adhere while the mat resin is still wet, I would test the Idea in bench test. My concern would be that if there was incompatibility you might end up with a gooey mess that wouldn't harden.

Q: I am installing new stringers, working off season, at lower temperatures. (1) Which Thixo product do you recommend? (2) What is the recommended application temperature range? (3) What is the cure time at the lowest recommended temperature? (4) How long before I can safety turn off the heat in my boat cabin if the outside temperature goes below freezing?

Q: I'm laying 1/4"" teak strips on a fiberglass deck and am considering THIXO as the adhesive. I would like an adhesive that grabs quickly so I don't have to put screws into the deck and that also is strong enough for holding decking. I'm thinking about either THIXO LV or THIXO Fast Cure. Which is better for this application? Or is another type of adhesive better?

3 Answers

A: Not sure. I will assume the fiberglass surface has not been previous painted, is properly degreased and prepped (sanded). Teak wood has natural oils and may not bond well with only epoxy. Best bet with any unique application is test on mock up first and run it through actual application, foot traffic, weather and water.

Q: why can this product not be used to fill gaps?

1 Answer

A: Because it cannot be applied over 1/2"" thick because it will generate heat as it cures at thicknesses over 1/2"", use the regular Thixo not the Fast Cure.
