Sets up fast

I used this to caulk my cockpit and flybridge. It worked well except when I was maybe 3/4 down the tube it started setting up a little too fast. I would first tape off the area then after applying the caulk remove the tape and use my finger to smooth out the edge. Toward the bottom of the tube it would start to set up even when I rushed removing the tape. I ended up tossing the tube and finished with a new tube. I don't know if the caulk was old or if it just starts setting up after the tube has been open as a nature of the product . Other than that it worked great and took pain well

Poor workability

Product skins over very quickly, but cures very slowly. Not much time to work with it. Probably not a great choice for bedding hardware.

Didn't Work for Me

It didn't stick to the materials I was using for my rain barrel and the bottom of the tube burst open getting the stuff all over my hands. I ended up tossing the whole mess in the trash.

My Go-To Sealant

There are a few really intense sealant uses, like removing and rebedding a keel, which I have never done. And then there's everything else. This is the only sealant I've found that remains usable in the tube between uses. As in, it doesn't cure in the tube or plug the nozzle. You can keep the tube in your toolbox and use it when needed over time. And I value that, because I have the sealant there when I need it. No more wasting a $20 tube to seal a screw hole. Other sealants I have used: 3M 4000 UV, 4200, Pettit UV hybrid, Dow 795, Boatlife polysulfide. Use a specialty sealant when needed, otherwise use this.

Works well, but be mindful of the timing

Rebedded 4 engine room ventilation covers, each approx 4' x 1'. Did all 4 and saved the edge finishing for last, but lost the ""clean edge"" look because the sealant started setting up. Recommend Totalboat provide specific guidance on allowable time to complete the ""finish edge"" work after dispencing. Would certainly help those doing larger projects.

Nope, nope, nope

This stuff starts setting and becomes unworkable in an extremely short time, about 5 seconds out of the nozzle. And that was not even on a hot day for my area, and indoors in a garage. I'll wait and see how it lasts in Southeast Texas heat and sun before I give it a total thumbs-down, but based on application alone, I will not be buying it again nor recommending it.

I used this TotalBoat Seal to afix my cover board on my center board trunk. I had used some sort of silicon previously and had some water splashing through in rough seas.I didn't want to use 5200 as I feared it would be too permanent. In truth, I haven't tried to remove the cover board and hope to not need to anytime soon but it applied nice and neat and somehow I didn't get it all over myself which is pretty much SOP with 5200, Ha!

Q: is this product a polysulfide? Please advise

2 Answers

A: TotalBoat Seal is not a polysulfide sealant. It is an elastomeric (synthetic rubber) adhesive sealant. Polysulfide sealants are more suitable for sealing teak deck joints or seams. TotalBoat Seal is not recommended for this application.

Q: I used TotalBoat Seal Elastomeric Marine Sealant on interior of cedar ribbed boat to seal some gaps between plank and ribs.Let cure for 7 days, then painted with kirby's topside paint. After 3 days paint will not dry where ever the sealant was applied.

1 Answer

A: Did you sand and prime prior to applying paint? That would help with adhesion and the topside paint curing.

Q: Has anyone Total Boat Seal to seal planking seams on a wooden boat after re-caulking with cotton?

A: Total Seal is UV stable and waterproof, making it great to use both above and below the waterline. It will adhere well to wood and should seal planking seams.

Q: I used this to fill cracks in my covered porch floor boards. It got messy and got on the surface of the boards which i didn't clean up fully. I tried sanding but it was too rubbery and would have disturbed the seal so I painted w oil paint and now it remains wet and sticky/tacky. I realize this may have been the wrong choice for this project, but any advice on how to proceed? Will it eventually harden enough to walk on?

1 Answer

A: You'll have to reach out to the paint manufacturer. It's possible the sealant wasn't fully cured and it is preventing the paint from curing. The only option for the sealant is to remove it by sanding. A reefing hook may help you remove it from the seams if they are wide enough.

Q: You mention Starboard as a compatible material. I don't need a structural bond, but it does need to stick to adjacent sheets of Starboard and fill zero"" to 1/4"" gaps. Can it do that without peeling off with light contact and temperature swings from +30F to +120F? Thanks.

1 Answer

A: That could work. Sand the joints with 80 grit and heat treat the surface with an open flame for best adhesion.

Q: i need something to seal 1/8"" between teak gunnels and fiberglass

2 Answers

A: Never used it between teak and fiberglass but works great between glass and glass.  I would think it would work well as it seems to stick to most things.  I would tape off the teak where you do not want the sealant to stick.

1 Answer

A: Yes, TotalBoat Seal is highly UV stable and can be sanded and painted when fully cured. It is not recommended for application on wooden deck seams and should not be used in areas where it may come into contact with gasoline. https://www.totalboat.com/product/seal/

Q: Hi, is this considered an MS polymer (Modified Silane)? Looking at bedding Acrylic windows. thanks

1 Answer

A: I would not use this product.  In the past I used a Dow Corning black silicone that was recommended by the person that sold me my replacement windows. It worked for a while. Being in the auto body business, I would recommend using a polyurethane sealant that is used in windshield replacement. Talk with a local glass shop and ask them. The seal or window may need a primer that is brushed on. . Years from now you may appreciate the free advise.
