Product Details

TotalBoat Rust Primer converts rust and prepares metals to be primed and painted. Use it on new metal for superior paint adhesion. Its unique, phosphoric acid-based formula is thin for easy application and excellent coverage of over 500 sq ft per gallon. Use it on just about any metal in high moisture, high humidity environments. It's perfect for marine engines and trailers.

TotalBoat Rust Primer is incredibly easy to use: First, use a wire brush to remove accumulated dirt, grease, loose paint and large rust flakes. Then brush the primer on. The metal will turn black to indicate the chemical change. Let dry. Simply brush off any dried residue and the surface will be ready for primer.

Available in Quart and Gallon sizes.

Great product it made my work easy.

In an existing facility structural columns show rust at the base areas, after a structural engineer analysis, he recommended to grind rust and prime columns. We cleaned columns and treat them with rust inhibitor, the next day rust disappeared and was ready for primer.

I am restoring a 1973 Harley Davidson golf cart. The chassis was very rusty, and I was afraid I would be spending days with a wire wheel to prep for paint. My brother recommended cleaning with a pressure washer and spraying Total Boat rust converter. It worked great as you can see in the pictures, and only took a few hours.

Sprayed the entire underneath of my 1977 Jimmy that's being restored, before undercoating. It did wonders on the rust on the frame and everywhere else. I just used a 16.00 insecticide sprayer from Lowes and it worked great.

I sanded all rust with a DA sander on the top of my 24 ft car hauler. Then put rust stop primer in a regular hand spray bottle and applied that way. Soaked it on good in the shade and let it sit all day. All steel is black. Next step is primer then EPDM rubber coating.

I have only just used the product on some rusted items, followed by metal primer and several coats of paint, so won't be for a couple of years to see how this treated materials hold up to some others I painted before getting the rust primer.

Q: So a metal primer is needed after applying this product or does it serve as a primer for final paint coating

A: Hey Rob, Thank you for reaching out. Though it is not required for all paints for best results we do recommend a metal primer like our: https://www.jamestowndistributors.com/product/product-detail/336169

Q: I have a floor standing drill press that has been in storage. The column has been covered in rust. Will the product be a good choice to restore the column?

A: This product is similar to Ospho, it converts the rust to a powder form that can be brushed off. Depending on the condition you may need to reapply and use a wire brush to prepare the substrate.

Q: I see the application temperature range is between 50 -90 degrees F but what about operational temperatures. Can this product be used on a marine gas or diesel engine?

A: It's not so much a primer as it is a treatment for rusty metal. The rust is converted to iron oxide which will hold up to normal engine temperatures, It should be painted over with engine-grade enamel to help inhibit oxidation.

Q: How about using on chromed surfaces that have developed areas of rust?

4 Answers

A: Sure. It will adhere to rust but not the chrome. Be sure to remove as much of the surface rust and punky chrome as possible before applying. If a cleaner/wax won't remove the rust then try the chemical. This is a strong acid so don't get it on your skin, or anything else for that matter. For heavy rust a second coat is useful. Keep this stuff well clear of bleach. Fumes *will* combine to make chlorine gas. Once the application is fully dry it can be painted over (not chrome of course). It is miscible in water so cleanup is easy. Give it a try and be careful.

Q: I applied this product and am left with a sticky surface. do I wait for the sticky to go away before fairing compound? pressure wash?

3 Answers

A: Sounds like something is off. BUT, never having touched the surfaces I've prepared, both because this is an acid, and because, why contaminate a surface you're preparing with oils and acids from your hands? That said, I've used this many many times, and the only unusual thing I've ever had happen, was one time where I was using it on a birdbath I left outside ""covered"" by a rubber mat and it rained overnight, it turned white, never had ""sticky"". Are you using it on some sort of alloy or low iron content metal? Did the surface of the metal turn black like it's supposed to? If the surface didn't turn black and you see ""rust"", apply another coat and keep coating until it's all black, DON'T touch the surface, you're undoing what you just did by contaminating the surface. I've only had one time where only one coat was required, and that was on the Cast Iron CB for my O'day Mariner, usually 2 or 3 coats are required (did 4 plus touch ups on the undercarriage of my truck.). After the surface is ENTIRELY black, apply your primer coat over that THEN you can think about applying fairing compound, another coat of primer over that, THEN you can paint. There's no shortcuts when painting, only ways you can do 80% of the work and end up having to redo it next year; do it 100% once and it'll last years.
