Product Details

TotalBoat Rust Primer converts rust and prepares metals to be primed and painted. Use it on new metal for superior paint adhesion. Its unique, phosphoric acid-based formula is thin for easy application and excellent coverage of over 500 sq ft per gallon. Use it on just about any metal in high moisture, high humidity environments. It's perfect for marine engines and trailers.

TotalBoat Rust Primer is incredibly easy to use: First, use a wire brush to remove accumulated dirt, grease, loose paint and large rust flakes. Then brush the primer on. The metal will turn black to indicate the chemical change. Let dry. Simply brush off any dried residue and the surface will be ready for primer.

Available in Quart and Gallon sizes.

Sorry, this one is a bust

Applied to two different frames side by side. One came out perfect, turned black and is ready for paint. The other one, the rustier of the two, dried with a chalky white powder all over it. The chalky powder will rub off on your hand but will not remove completely, it shows thru primer when I tried a spot. Does not remove with air or acetone. Outside for a pressure wash is next. Really, REALLY unhappy with this product. It made a nightmare of additional work. Never again for me...

Great stuff!

Used this on several tools, but where it really worked great was on my old rusty truck rims. Sprayed it on in the afternoon and let it sit overnight. Then sprayed the rims a second time and they look like new. Bought a small plastic spray bottle from the Dollar store to use as a dispenser.

This stuff makes you wish you had more rust to be treated! (Even if I did use it on the motorcycle that's my boat transportation)

Rust converter

I usually buy OSPHO and thought I would try the JD brand. It seems to work the same and costs less. It's worth having a bottle of this around the house. Treating rust with one of these compounds before painting etc. makes the steel last longer, requiring less maintenance in the future. Wear gloves and eye protection. It's phosphoric acid. I put on two coats a day apart.

Get a few cheap paint brushes and paint on small areas to save money. Spray on larger areas to make it easier.
