Product Details

Airex PXc Board, from Baltek, is a high density, glass-reinforced urethane foam panel. Applications include rotted plywood transom replacement in outboard motor installations. Formerly known as Penske Board and similar to Coosa Board, Airex PXC can be used as a foam or balsa core replacement when thru-bolting deck hardware, plywood replacement for small-boat cockpit soles, under-deck autopilot installations etc.

With the addition of fiberglass mat or fabric on either side, these rigid urethane foam sheets have excellent screw-holding ability. Baltek boards are resistant to water absorption while still providing thermal insulation. Not designed for cosmetic applications, typically used with fiberglass skins added to both sides. Easily cut with standard woodworking tools.

These PXc 385 rigid foam boards are all 24 lb density and available in 12 different sizes.

Info & Guides

Airex PXc boards are all 24lb density and come in 4' x 8' sheets, as well as boards in 4' x 4' and 2' x 4'

Note: The 4' x 8' and 4' x 4' sheets are currently available for store pick-up and truck shipment only. The 2' x 4' sheets can be shipped by standard ground carriers.

I'm using Airex to replace old balsa core in a 30 year-old boat, and it's perfect. Easy to cut, easy to bond, very rigid but workable.

Have used this board for everything from bulkheads to battery boxes. Strong and lightweight, it does well with marine epoxy fiberglass-reinforcement layups.

Replaced an interior cabin wall of old marine plywood. Easy to work with, good strength to weight. I finished one side with epoxy resin before covering with my interior upholstry material. Wall mounted fixtures screwed into place with excellent holding strength.

Q: null Replacing transom on 1966 23-3 formula thunderbird .Conversion to outboard had already been done before I purchased 20 years ago .I have already removed the inside glass and the balsa and plywood core along with 48"" of two center stringers . The transom having a bump out and a radius is my challenge . The thickest area where bump had 1.25 of ply than around I o bump out was 1/2"" balsa core . Will need to go thicker and have some type of knees to stringers I feel to support a bracket with for a 250 or 300 outboard . The old conversion was done with aluminum bracket on interior fastened to stringers than thru bolted to steel gill bracket on outside . This has all been removed since it deteriorated from dissimilar metal corrosion . Will be making transom strong enough some type of board and glass this time .

A: This would work fine provided the glass laminates are thick enough.

Q: null I'm considering this to replace the 3/4 marine ply used in the floor of my runabout. I'm also considering Coosa Board, but I've read it does not hold screws well and I have several hatches that have Paino hinges screwed into the plywood. Does this material hold screws? Also do I have to put resin or a layer of glass on it or can I just cover it with my flooring material?

1 Answer

A: You should cover it with fiberglass and use G10 to reinforce areas where fasteners may be needed.

A: I used this product as part of my deck coring to anchor cleats, etc. Jamestown specifies this material for transom coring. I believe it would be ideal for that application.
