Product Details

Copper Burrs, also known as copper washers, are often used with Copper Common Nails to create a traditional copper rivet, similar to clinch nailing. Copper rivets are utilized in classic planked wooden boat construction.

See the "Burr Size Selector" chart below for burr and nail assembly suggestions.

Not for riveting witdh 14g copper nails

Description says these burrs can be used with the copper nails to make rivets. I ordered the 14g copper nails and matching 14g hole burrs. However the burr holes are too large and do NOT cinch down on the 14g nails, making it impossible to use a rivet setter to peen the nail end down after it is cut to length for the material thickness. Would not recommend for rivet use as described.

Q: null My boat plans call for a 11 gauge rivet ; which burr size do you recommend for a good fit?

1 Answer

A: The specs are listed under the tech tab. There is no 11 gauge so your best option would be the rivet for a #12 which is slightly smaller or a #10 which will be a loose fit but you may be able to tighten it up by peening the rivet.

Q: null What size copper burr would I use as a backup washer for an 1/8"" pop rivet? Thanks in advance.

1 Answer

A: You should use washers of the same material as the pop rivet, aluminum or stainless most likely. Using different materials will likely set up a galvanic couple and the less noble material will erode to the more noble. The ID of the rivet should snugly fit the rivet.

Q: null At the museum that I volunteer at a 11G, 2__quote__ copper slate nail in conjunction with an in-house container labeled with a #13 burr which I measured to be about 3/8__quote__ diameter is used on a regular basis for boat work. In the charts I cannot put together this combination. The nail I am sure of but I would like the burr to be 3/8 __quote__ or very close with a tight fit. This is for installing a new rub rail on a dinghy project. I would appreciate it if someone could confirm the burr I need so that I can order. Could you please assist? Thank you.

A: A #13 Burr has a hole diameter of .102__quote__ . Copper nails in 12 gauge have a shank diameter of .109 which would be a tight fit on the #13 burr. If the Nail is an 11 gauge that shaft diameter should be about .121__quote__ which means the #13 burr will be real tight. A #12 burr has an ID hole of .124 which will be large on an 11 gauge nail. There isn't a #11 burr unfortunately.

A: NOTE! A NO. #14 NAIL (.083__quote__ SHANK DIA.) WILL GIVE A LOSE FIT OF .010__quote__ WITH A NO. #14 BURR. (.093__quote__ I.D.) I WOULD USE A NO.#12 NAIL (.109__quote__ SHANK DIA.) WITH A NO.#13 (.102__quote__ I.D.) TO GIVE ME A TIGHT FIT (OR FORCE FIT) OF .007__quote__ . ( THE 18'LYMAN )
