Check for scratches!

One of my 5 pieces had a scratch that is not easily rubbed out. I have drilled & countersunk over 100 holes. I had to get the correct size screws from a local hardware store because you don't have them. My experience with you and this rub rail could have been better.

Worked out well.

Used it for a rub rail on a dinghy. Tricky to drill and counter sink for screws. Wish it was pre drilled.

hard to find item

This brass half round is ideal for stem piece on my canoes. It's easy to use and reinforces this area tremendously. Came shipped in a coil that required straightening this time unlike the last when it came flat and strait in a tube...is a great product that is hard to find anywhere else.

Nice Product But Problem With Communication.

The product was acceptable but the shipping department neglected to communicate that the shipping charges were going to be almost as much as the half oval trim. When I placed the order the shipping charges were ""to be determined"". The order was shipped without notifying me how much the shipping was. Would not have bought this had I known the shipping was going to be so expensive.

Exactly what I needed for the skeg on my old dinghy.

I'm restoring a 1962 Dyer Dhow 7'11"" dinghy, and replaced the skeg with a nice piece of white oak. I wanted to protect it further from being dragged up on a beach. This was the perfect size. I only needed about 18"" of it but have plenty left for other projects.

Beautiful and easy to work with

Was thrilled how quickly I got my order. Brass was easy to cut, drill, and polish. Used it as chafe guard on teak toe rail of my Cape Dory 30. Highly recommend the product.

Poorly packaged for shipping.

I spent considerable time trying to straighten a badly bent product. The box it was shipped in folded during shipment and put some nasty kinks in the half oval.

Rolled is OK

Ordered a length of 3/8 for use on canoe stems. Went with rolled shipping to save money. Material is pretty stiff & springy, so it mostly straightened out on unpacking. It will take a little work to bend it to the right curve using some kind of rounded form, but it should work OK. Unless I needed a piece that was dead flat and straight, I wouldn't hesitate to use the rolled shipping method again. It will need a little polishing to to get rid of the tarnish and get a bright shine, but overall looks good.

Perfect

I purchased this brass for a cedar strip canoe I was rehabbing. Originally I orederd a 12 foot piece. A day later I got an email that it was backordered, and I asked if I could swithch it to two 6 foot pieces, which they did immediately. A couple of days later, it was delivered, in time for me to put it on the canoe and go paddling. Excellent customer service and delivery.

Q: How corrosion resistant is the brass, is it ""naval brass"" that can withstand direct contact with saltwater?

3 Answers

A: Brass is not recommended for direct contact with seawater. Bronze does better than brass in that application. Brass is subject to corrosion and weakening by ""dezincification"".

Q: Can you make screw holes in the rub rail? Bronze 1/2 inch by 6ft

1 Answer

A: Yes, I was able to easily drill holes into the stock. I don't have a drill press, and just used a portable drill with a drill guide, but did not have that many holes to drill. If I had long sections and a lot of holes, I would probably invest in a drill press. Hope this helps.

Q: The product description is very clear that it is not pre-drilled. I do not have a machine shop where precise center of round will be easy to (or possible) to drill for use. Is there a pre-drilled version available in 12-14' lengths. I am replacing a brass skeg along keel of a rowing boat that has fractured at the screws holes over the round forward bend. I don't believe it can be braised or mended to use.

A: Take it to a machine shop. Drilling it on a drill press will be more accurate and a lot easier. Also if you must drill it yourself, mark out each whole then centre punch the locations, it should drill fine.

Q: To save on shipping how do I request that the trim is rolled.

1 Answer

A: I believe it will ship the least expensive method possible as the default. There is a comment section where you can make the request when you place the order, or you can call the TotalSupport Center at 800-423-0030 to be sure.

Q: This is my second question regarding the brass rub rail. I have a 23' Menger Catboat with a 10' beam. It has a two inch wide solid teak rub rail approximately 1 1/2 inch thick. I'd like to add a 12 ' long brass rub rail to the teak rail as my slip is narrow (and I'm tired of re-doing the teak). I'm considering the 3/4 inch X 12' brass half oval trim piece. Would #4 or #6 silicone bronze screws be best? Is 3/4 inch long enough? Will you be able to ship 2 x 12' pieces to Lancaster, PA in a way to arrive undamaged? I'm open to any other suggestions. Want to keep traditional look on boat. Thanks, Dave

A: Well, I bought some of the 1/2"" half oval, and I think #6 screws would work better. I still have it, and have never mounted it, so I can't say from field experience, but I can say that I never considered #4 screws. As for length of screws, I guess it all boils down to how much abuse you think it would get. For myself, I would use the longest screws I could use, simply because I would not want them to pull out. Of course, if they did pull out the longer screws would do more damage, but I think they would be less likely to pull out in the first place. Hope that helps!

Q: what size brass/bronze screws should i use with 1/2 inch brass half/round run rail to install on teal rub rail of sailboat

4 Answers

A: First, use silicon bronze screws, not brass. Brass are not strong enough. Size is dependent on the length or depth that you have to go to screw into a solid surface beyond the rub rail. The diameter of the screw is partially related to the finished look or aesthetics. Some people like to use round headed screws and not recess the screw head into the brass half round. Others might like to countersink a flat headed screw so the finished appearance is closer to a flush surface. That's where the diameter of the screw head makes a difference because the 1/2"" brass can be weakened by a big countersink for a big screw head. Probably more than you wanted to hear and I didn't tell you what size screw to buy. Whatever screw style use silicon-bronze.
