I would buy it again

I decided to try this as an alternative to Interlux 202 because it is less expensive and is reported not to have as strong of a smell. Indeed it doesn't have the strong smell of Interlux 202, is less expensive, and seems to work. It may flash off a little faster than the Interlux 202, but it's hard to tell here in Florida during a heat wave. I was using this on a 35-year-old sailboat deck, so not sure how much ""stuff"" was there for it to remove, but after using it water sheeted evenly over the area, so there appears there are no contaminants left behind.

Q: Will this product remove tape residue from cured epoxy/fiberglass hand layup?

1 Answer

A: Thanks for reaching out. It would probably help with light residue, but it is formulated to remove grease and wax rather than adhesives. We carry another product called DeBond, which would probably be much more efficient at this process.

Q: Question concerns TB Dewaxer and Surface Prep. Fiberglass sailboat is waxed every year. First year, boat turned out great. Each successive year (5 years), not as good, progressively worse. Tried to rebuff last year. No improvement. Surface appears shiny in some areas, not shiny in others. Very hard to remove wax residue and polish the surface. I generally do no more than 10 sq ft at a time. I wait for 60 degree temp or warmer. I'm thinking about removing all wax build-up and starting fresh. Two questions. Is this the right product to use? How much for a 28ft sailboat if I want to clean sheer line to water line?

A: Very doubtful. You'll probably need some much stronger.  Perhaps rubbing compound.

Q: Can I use this in lieu of Awlgrip Awlprep Wax & Grease Remover, if I only need a quart? (boat has Awlcraft 2000 on it).

1 Answer

A: Usually an epoxy or urethane surface which be sanded is cured enough to be wiped down with Awl-prep surface cleaning solvents, but not de-waxing or degreasing solvents.

Q: I am painting the deck on a 14 x 44' Gibson house boat. What is your estimate on how many gallons and how much of the dewaxer I would need?

1 Answer

A: It depends on the type of paint you plan to use but a good rule of thumb is that one gallon of paint will cover @400 sq ft with one coat. The dewaxer has the consistency of water so mopping your deck with a bucket of water would give you a good idea of how much dewaxer you'll need. My guess is you'll need 1 or two gallons of dewaxer and lots of rags.

Q: Is Totalboat dewaxer effective for removing amine blush from cured epoxy?

1 Answer

A: No. Blush is water soluble. Use warm water and a scotch-brite pad.

Q: Can this be used to remove anime blush when using Total boat epoxy for repairs? I will definitely order this prior to painting with Total Boat Wet Edge, but I am curious if it can be used to remove anime blush as well. Loads of repairs to do before painting.

1 Answer

A: Water and dish soap with a scotch bright pad works well for blush. I haven?t tried this but it?s similar to xylene solvent. Just as a side note, I use 2 to 1 epoxy that doesn?t blush and it?s saved a lot of time. Get Outlook for iOS< https://aka.ms/o0ukef>

Q: Can I use this product {TB dewaxer and surface prep ] to clean bottom of boat instead of sanding. The bottom is smooth and has no chips or bubbles. I am appling anew bottom paint and will use TB Spartan.

1 Answer

A: This product, as the name says, is a de-waxer. If your bottom is THAT clean, then I would still wash it with a heavy duty degreaser and then use this dewaxer. A degreaser will remove things that are stuck to the bottom (oil and fuel residues that all boats navigate over, etc, etc) which a dewaxer cannot remove because of how quickly it evaporates and this how little it penetrates. It truly is a surface treatment, really, really, really surface, like the outermost, thinner layer. However, if your boat is not that big, however clean the bottom is, I would sand it and then, dewax it, then paint. That way you guarantee your new paint will stick for sure.
