Product Details

Multi-purpose TotalBoat Special Brushing Thinner 100 improves the flow for solvent-based TotalBoat paints and primers applied by brush or roller. Formulated especially for use with TotalBoat Wet Edge topside paint, TotalGold, TotalTread non-skid paint, and others.

Note: Use Epoxy Primer Thinner 200 with TotalProtect & Aluminum Boat Barrier Coat Primers. Do not use Brushing Thinner 100 with these 2 primers.

Due to its slower drying properties, Thinner 100 improves flow and helps preserve the wet edge, extending the working time in warm weather conditions (over 75°F) when applying TotalBoat Topside Primer or TotalBilge paint by brush or roller.

After painting, use Special Brushing Thinner 100 to clean painting tools and equipment quickly and easily.

Available in Quart and Gallon sizes.

Info & Guides
THINNING NOTES: TotalBoat Spray Thinner 101 can be substituted for Special Brushing Thinner 100 in cool-weather applications, below 60°F, to promote excellent flow, wet edge properties, and faster dry times. In addition, Spray Thinner 101 is the recomended thinner for spray application of most TotalBoat one-part finishes.

Good thinner. Different from standard thinner.

This thinner seems a bit more evaporative then standard thinner. Has a slightly different odor. Does what it is supposed to do. Over painted substrate has a nice heat to help with bonding of the primer.

Brushing thinner contents

Product works well with the Total Tread paint. No chemical content printed on container. By law it should be. Most thinners for one part urethane are kerosene and naphtha. I guess marketing is more important than compliance.

Excellent product with 1 liability

I sprayed 6 coats of TB Gleam on white oak patio furniture. First was thinned 25% with this solvent. Clean up per coat was via the same. Performance in both tasks was without issue. What you need from a thinner. The gallon can was overkill, a two handed whopper, and plenty left over after spraying 2 gallons poly spar varnish. But a lot of spillage. The can CAN'T control the pour. Expensive stuff if 5-10% ends up wasted. I would buy 2 or more quarts if I could, instead.

Are use the brushing thinner recently on a boat project. Our shop would normally not get involved in but it was a 1956 Chris craft needed. Partial restoration are used to center for brushing and thinning. Total boat gloss varnish worked amazingly well allowing more workable time with the finish

Paint thinner.

Product seems ok, but just so blooming expensive. Should be some way to find out whether it is just plain old fashioned, cheap paint thinner from your local paint store.

I thinned each gallon of paint with 4 oz. of thinner - stirring until well blended before rolling on. It made the paint glide effortlessly onto my deck,

Q: null can you use the brushing 100 to thin wet edge paint to Spray with at 10 to 20 % to thin paint for spraying.

A: No, the paint won't cure properly and is likely to sag or wrinkle.. You should use the 101 spraying thinner or Xylene.

Q: null For one gallon of wet edge. How much thinner should I use when using a roller. This is for a fiberglass deck. Also do I have to lightly sand the deck to get wet edge to adhere ? Thanks

A: Hey Chris, Thank you for reaching out. I would only thin what you are using at the time. For Rolling we recommend 5%-10% Depending on conditions

Q: null Can use this to thin 2 part automotive epoxy primer (DTM) so I can roll vs spray?

1 Answer

A: I would not attempt to spray two-part epoxy. I have used total boat 100 thinner for several brands of boat paint with excellent results, but thinning epoxy to the viscosity you can spray is risky business.

Q: null I am buying wed edge and primer for small dinghy.. can I use acetone or paint thinner prior to rolling/tipping? thanks. Dave

1 Answer

A: I recommend TB 100 for thinning the paint. It is a good idea to wipe down the surface with dewaxer, acetone, or denatured alcohol prior to sanding so you don't grind wax or contaminants into the substrate. TB100 or denatured alcohol would be the best choice to clean the surface after sanding to pick up the dust before you paint.

Q: null How does this differ from acetone? Would both of these give me the same results?

1 Answer

A: Thinner 100 is mostly a high flash naphtha, Acetone is different and will not work.
