I will purchase again

Outdrive antifouling paint. I used this over the barrier coat on my prop. The spray can was super easy to use. It allowed for multiple coats. Once dried it was a flat black - which looked great.

We use this annually on our Saildrive lower unit. It works well in fresh water (Great Lakes). Goes on thin and dries fast -- so no build-up problems. It is also compatible with aluminum alloys, which many anti-fouling paints are not.

I have used this on my sailboat propeller. It has kept the barnacles away and after a light sanding and respraying I am good for the next season on Buzzards Bay.

Will Never BUY again. Does Not spray (1 out of 3 cans work)

I purchased this product ( 2 cans) since I could not find the aquagaurd spray as I have good results with other jd products. The first can the nozzle exploded paint all over my hands as I just about got through half the can. JD was quick to send me a replacement received it in less than 24 hrs. Thanks, Tom C. ( as I am local) the 2 nd can work without issue. I went down yesterday to finish the running gear with the replacement can and it stopped spraying halfway through. Needless to say I am frustrated. I followed the directions shook it for 2 minutes. I set a timer.

I purchased two cans of this to try since they no longer carry aqua guard. Being total boat product I was excited to try this. This first can I used the spray nozzle pretty much exploded on my covered my hands and covered them in paint. I quickly called them as my boat is going in soon and need just about 2 cans for my running gear. Tom C was awesome I got the next can in 24hrs.(as I am local) The other can worked fine of my first 2 I purchased no problems. Went down today to finish with the replacement can and it stopped spraying about qtr of the way through the can. I am down with this product, I have about 90 sprayed after 3 cans. And yes I followed the directions set a timer and shook it for 2 minutes. Please get aquardguard back. Thanks Jay

Not a good experience with this paint. I followed all instruction on the can and my outdrive looked great when completed. However it did not cover as described, I needed 2 cans and 4 coats for good coverage. The label said one can could cover a normal out-drive. Very poor coverage. Growth and barnacles were present as well at the end of the season. Not so when I have used Trilux33. Very disappointed in this product. Will not buy this again, will go back to Trilux33.

I have not yet used it as my boat is in storage for the winter. I plan on using the AF Paint on my out drive in the spring.

Q: Can this paint be used on my transducers?

4 Answers

A: Hey Scott. Thanks for reaching out. Most transducers should only be painted with water based paints, as something about the oil or solvent based ones can block the signal. I would not recommend this paint for that reason. If your transducers are not aluminum, you could try JD Select water-based antifouling paint.

Q: Can I apply over Velox on my prop and saildrive?

1 Answer

A: JD has not tested it over Velox. Velox says not to apply over other antifouling paints, so it follows that the reverse is also true. It would be prudent to first remove Velox before repainting.

Q: Can this be applied over a transducer?

A: I never tried it on the transducer. I always buy a special paint for the transducer.  It comes in a small container not much bigger than a fingernail polish bottle and it has a brush like a finger nail brush. This spray paint works great on my outdrive.
