Mixing Notes

Gelcoat and Polyester Resins: Mix pigment dispersion into gelcoat or polyester before you add MEKP catalyst, so you can test for the right color before the curing process starts. This is especially important when you're trying to color match the gelcoat on your boat. When you get the color you want, just mix in the catalyst and apply. When color matching gelcoat, know that mixing pigment dispersion into a neutral gelcoat creates a darker, bolder color and white gelcoat produces lighter, pastel colors. Add up to 10% TotalBoat Pigment Dispersion to TotalBoat Gelcoat products (up to 12% for yellow, orange, and red).

Epoxy: For a proper cure, epoxy requires exact mixing ratios, as specified by the manufacturer. When mixing pigment dispersion into epoxy, combine the epoxy resin and hardener first, stir to blend completely, then add pigment dispersion (up to 10%).

Good stuff

These pigments are really vibrant and work well with the gelcoat. Be sure to watch the how to videos about tinting the gelcoat. A little goes a long way.

Disappointed with Pigments

White gel coat plus brown pigment yielded a light brown with pinkish tint. No warnings or instructions to make a light brown / khaki color. Added black to get rid of pinkish tint --- it made a purple-ish tint. Why not provide a few recipes for colors??? I now have a gallon of wax gelcoat that is worthless!

Used this product to color some thickset fathom I used to fill 1"" wide and 1"" deep gaps in a piece of black walnut. Color saturation was excellent with the suggested amount of pigment.

Product was fine but leaked

Three pigment jar purchased none of the lids were tight. Two were just good enough to keep product in but the lid on the white was very lose and about a third leaked into the shipping box. It was, of course the white I needed the most of since I had purchased the fiberglass resin in clear by accident. It's easier to start with the white resin as a base but they don't allow you to return errors.

Products worked great

I was restoring a 14 foot Lavro Lazy drifter. Drift boat. I used the gelcote to cove the fiberglass seats and then recovers the entire boat. I added black pigment in the inside to create a dark grey and voted the bottom in white.

Really good gelcoat tints.

I have tried several brands of gelcoat tints, but find this tint the best. Easy to mix. Doesn't take much either.
