Q: What is the best way to remove Sikaflex 296 from the framing of a shattered boat window, prior to a new window install?
4 years ago1 Answer
A: Hi I do this all the time and can advise that you need an oscillating saw with a smooth not too sharp blade. Being careful that it does not break the frame itself, glide the blade under the old Sika and cut it. All the chemicals(acetone, Goof-off, Sik226 or 205 - a specific prepping stripper for Sika 296,etc) available, don't break the cured product down. They are more likely to damage other fittings you have not properly masked off etc. Point is, its a physical, difficult process. I imply a set of very sharp chisels and try not to scratch the surrounding gelcoat as I use a combination of force and technique to cut away small patches. A good ting to remember is that Sika 296 sticks like crazy to itself if you use the 205 activator. So what you absolutely cannot remove physically can stay there and will form part of a very strong ""primer"". Have fun Robin Mohr Afritec Marine Electronics Annapolis MD

Q: ?O'Day 26. The ports are frameless acrylic or plexiglass are seem to be leaking around edges. Do you recommend Sikaflex 295 UV or Sikaflex 296, or some other product?
6 years ago1 Answer
A: Sika 295 should be more than sufficient. It comes in black only. Also the 296 only comes in the larger 20 oz. sausage that may be difficult without the applicator gun.

Q: can sikaflex 296 be used for residential home window interior caulking ?
12 years ago2 Answers
A: We used the caulking for the fixed windows on our boat (trawler) and it has worked beautifully. We used all of the recommended primers for the glass, the teak window frames as well as the fiberglass. After three years, no leaks. I would assume you could use this on any type of window. It is great stuff, with the caveat that it is tough to work with (super sticker and clean up is a chore) and quite expensive. I would say, that if you use it and follow the directions, the project should last a long time. Honch

Q: Hi, which Sikaflex is the best for sealing my sailing boat perspex windows to fiberglass body please?
13 years ago1 Answer
A: Hi Chris, According to my info perspex is an organic glass(plastic) and the recommended is sika 295uv, per page 16 and 17 (of the SikaFlex Marine Handbook - bonding and sealing systems, if you don't have one, you can google it). I'm using Sika 296 on my rebedding project with an activator as I have mineral glass (regular glass). If you need more info you can contact Sika directly, as I did. You will find them very helpful. I left a message and someone called me back within a day - 800.888.0698. Best wishes
