Check out the threading on the ports for machining damage.

I had to purchase this item twice - once from an alternate vendor. The first unit had damaged threads. In examining their stock that supplier found all other units in stock had the same issue. The second unit from Jamestown similarly had bad machining on the threads of one port, but I was able to use it. There seem to be some quality issues on the manufacturing end. Jamestown is always great as a supplier and handled the order, shipping, etc. perfectly.

Poor QC and might freeze

The holes in the sheet metal did not align with the water pipes so I could not connect it to the engine hoses. I checked to see how well it drained the potable water to prevent freezing and found that it still held over a quart of water when ""drained"". I returned it without any hassle.

not functional

Just bought and returned a 6 gallon model. The sheet metal housing has holes just big enough for a socket wrench to put in the pipe fittings but the ports in the tank don't align with the holes in the housing so one cannot assemble it. The instructions seem to say the draining the fresh water tank with the cheap drain valve will protect it from freezing damage. I checked and measured that that still leaves 1.5 gallons of water in the tank. The instructions later recommend that the whole fresh water system be winterized with antifreeze - including the 6 gallons in the water heater. I asked the US distributer for clarification but have not received an answer. When I bought my old boat 15 years ago it had one of this brands water heaters. I drained it with the drain valve but it broke during the second winter. Thought it was just old age but now I know that doesn't really protect it. I bought a different brand that also broke but not until last winter. Just installed a third brand and will do a review of it next year.

great product and it was a smooth purchase

Overall turned out to be a good purchase experience but went into it a little skeptical. I had to purchase without knowing what I was going to be charged for shipping which is a little scary when dealing w a company for the first time. I did put in the comments section that my order was contingent on shipping charges and they sent an email promptly letting me know what that would be. Shipping was fair and fast. Would do business with them again.

It's the same, but not the same :)

Replaced 17 year old water heater with this 11 gal. of what I thought was the same make and model. Looks the same. Screw holes for mounting were not in same locations so had to pilot drill new holes for new screw locations. This unit is also a little bit bigger than last one. All connections are in the same location and fit perfectly. No problem installing and connecting it other than where boat manufacturer decided to put it. Works great, just follow nicely written book of instructions.

I've use this water heater on my 30 feet Yatch, which replaced one identical to the one I purchased, and was been use for 22 years, and it would have lasted another 22 more years if it wasn't that some body turned the switch on with no water in the tank, that's a no, no, big mistake, it heats water very quickly

Q: I have a seaward model S 700 E water heater without a heat exchanger which I do not need due to outboard engines on a grady. Can I get the same unit as a replacement ? All I find on line are 600S units....? and all units seem to have a heat exchange feature....

1 Answer

A: I have had a heat exchanger in my hot water heater start leaking so I bypassed it and used the hot water heater for over two years without a problem. I just coupled the two hoses coming from the engine together with a copper pipe and hose clamps. I don't know why that wouldn't work. Good luck.

A: We don't have drain valves, but if you remove it and go to a plumbing supply store they should have one.

Q: I have just purchased a new Whale (Seaward) hot water heater to replace my existing heater. My new unit has heat exchanger connections. I have never had this feature previously. Do I need to hook up the heat exchanger or can I operate it without?

A: You can just run it on 110/120V AC shore power alone.

Q: After long periods of engine run time, existing model F1100 water heater just started blowing relief valve when fresh water system turned on and hot water run in galley sink. Water is extremely hot (much hotter than it used to be under same circumstances just last week). Does this indicate a particular problem and can it be adjusted?

2 Answers

A: You may want to check your engine and verify it is not running hot. This would make the water in the water heater much hotter than usual, and add pressure to blow your relief valve.

Q: Replacing an original water heater on my 1987 SeaRay. Existing is Atwood Seaward Model #EHM6-SM, 120V, 6 ga capacityl, rear heat exchanger hook up, 1500 W element. Will this product be a suitable replacement?

3 Answers

A: Yes. I did that exact same thing on my 1988 Catalina 30 a couple of months ago. Works perfectly. A few notes. If you want an anode instead of a drain valve, you have to buy it separately. It does NOT come with hose connections. I had to buy ½ inch male pipe thread to ½ inch hose barb connectors for my hoses to connect.

Q: I have pinkish liquid coming from my water heater, I believe. My anti-freeze is pink but the engine is not leaking anywhere, all hoses are new, etc. I believe its coming from the water heater. Does heated water from engine circulate somewhere in the water heater? 2001, Catalina 36. Looks like I have Seaward S600? Even though it looks like S700. 6 gallons. Are there service people in my area of Oceanside California?

1 Answer

A: If the freshwater system was winterized with antifreeze, that would account for it. If not that and you are loosing antifreeze in your engine, then it would be the heat exchanger in the water heater has a leak.
