Product Details

TotalBoat Silica Thickener is an extremely fine powder used to create a smooth, non-sagging, high-strength mixture for structural bonding, filleting, and filling. It can be used alone or in conjunction with Milled Glass Fibers or Phenolic or Glass Microballoons.

To prepare, first mix together the amount of resin/hardener that your project requires. Then add any fiber fillers or bulking agents and mix well. Add silica thickener to the mixture last. Remember to ALWAYS stir bottom to top.

Info & Guides
A 5-quart quantity of Silica Thickener when combined with 1 gallon kit of TotalBoat 5:1 epoxy (group size B), will produce about 1.75-gallons of smooth thixotropic epoxy filler

I use it mainly as a thickener for vertical layups and also for ""gluing"" support pieces together. It's very uniform and mixes in easily.

Good product -Did some of what I wanted

I used the product to thicken the epoxy I was putting on so that I could slope it. It got thicker but I did not use enough and it still ran. Apparently, you have to use quite a bit to get it to thicken and become more solid than liquid but still pliable. Instructions would have been helpful. It makes it easier to sand but not by much. The epoxy is so hard, I had to use a grinder disk on my oscillator to lower some high spots.

This product is very fine and being silica I am very careful not to breathe when using, so I use less.

This is the best deal I've found on quart size silica thickeners. Great price plus free shipping because it's a Total Boat product. Everything I've ever ordered from Jamestown/Total Boat comes well packaged so it arrives in good condition. Jamestown has certainly been good to deal with everytime I've orded from them.

Great product, poor packaging

First of all, Jamestown Distributors took care of me and for that I gave 3 stars. I took 2 stars off for having to go through the hassle of dealing with the following: I bought a 5 quart tub and when it was delivered, the lid had come off of the tub resulting in the filler spilling out all over inside of the box. Taping the lid down would have prevented this. In the past, I ordered a single quart and that was taped with strapping tape so why not this time? As for the filler, it mixes well with West Systems and does the job. To Jamestown Distributors: update your packing instructions for the order packers to always tape the tub lids.

Thickener to make it stick

Added in sufficient amounts to thicken the TotalBoat epoxy so it would stay put against the underside of the deck long enough to insert the G10 reinforcement into the repair opening. Blended well once enough was added to get the right consistency.

Q: I just got total boat penetrating epoxy I am applying on bare wood on keel. I have several inches of 1/8 inch gouge, can I mix silica thickener with that to fill the gaps?

2 Answers

A: What I would do would be to apply the penetrating epoxy first to seal the wood then before it fully cures mix another batch with the silica to thicken it to the consistency of peanut butter or mayo and fill the gouge and any needed curves

Q: Mixed micro balloons with 5 to1 resin. When sanded, can I prime over this? Or do I need to topcoat it with resin to seal it first? What is a good primer to use? Thanks, Joe.

3 Answers

A: After sanding smooth with 120 to 220 grit, you can prime over it. A single part topside primer like Totalboat Topside Primer or the Two Part Epoxy primer will work well.
