First time using bottom paint but would recommend alternating white and grey coats even though it cost more than buying the gallon. For some reason I got better coverage with the grey compared to the white

Barrier coat, yes. Primer, not so much

I used Total Protect as a primer / barrier over a deck and bulwarks that had been mostly sanded to bare fiberglass. Applied per instructions with the supplied roller and an equivalent mini roller for the tight spots, I found the product hard to apply smoothly. In dry, 70 degree weather and thinned to maximum recommended, it would only hold a wet edge for 20 or 30 seconds. The resultant finish had a heavy orange peel and lumps where edges lapped. All the areas where a smooth final finish was required needed extensive sanding and two additional coats of a traditional high-build primer. I feel good that the deck is well protected, but it was much more work than I bargained for. Total Protect is good for wide-open areas where orange peel can be tolerated, but a real pain in areas with fine detail that need a smooth, glossy final finish.

Works great on an aluminum pool coping

I spent a couple of weeks sanding off four or five layers of old paint on a 30 year old pool liner coping. I didn't want to waste my time on questionable products that say they work on aluminum and are good for water. I discovered Total Boat on Amazon and bought the paint and called the Total Boat company to purchase the epoxy primer. The salesman knew exactly what I needed and within a couple of days I received the epoxy paint. The primer went on very well somewhat thick, but it flowed great. Looking back, it was near 90° and I should've used a little more of the thinner. I used a JB Weld epoxy kit to fill in where the aluminum head. And actually been eaten through. The primer went on the JB Weld very well also. I then put the epoxy paint on top and it is a smooth as glass. It looks phenomenal. I hope it lasts as good as it looks. So I have marine grade primer, and paint on my pool coping for a saltwater pool. Currently the water just rolls off the paint. Love this product. It is a bit touchy with the fumes and you must wear gloves and some long sleeves but if I never have to touch this for a few years, it will be well worth it!!!!

Perfect base coat for a stripped aluminum deck.

Stirring and mixing was straightforward. Plenty of time to paint the whole deck before the epoxy started to firm up. There was enough paint for three full coats.

Seems very durable

I've only put the boat in the water one time since I put this paint on, so I can't comment on the durability yet, but the leftover paint I left in the can I was painting from got very hard, so I don't see anything going wrong with the paint I put on the hull of my boat. The staff at Total Boat was awesome to work with and guided me to all of the materials I needed for this repair.

Great Product As You Gain Experience

At first, I found this paint to be a little temperamental. I didn't like the result of using the TB epoxy thinner due to the quick evaporation and added fumes. I also had some issues with clumping if I over-rolled the application. I decided to watch a You Tube video of Louis Sauzedde applying the product and cutting it with mineral spirits, and even though I thoroughly wipe down the surface, I also had suspicions of surface contamination causing the clumping issue. I sponged off the surface with water, wiped it twice with TB surface prep, and was still picking up surface dust on my black nitril gloves. I finally used a microfiber dusting cloth and that seemed to do the trick. After mixing and setting for 15 minutes, I thinned with 10% mineral spirits and was able to roll on like acrylic enamel. Smooth as a baby's behind.

use this gray color epoxy primer & barrier coat

I used this gray epoxy primer coat first, followed by a white epoxy primer for the second coat. It worked perfectly. This gray epoxy primer paint was the perfect first coat of bottom paint, below the water line, on a Catalina 22 sailboat. It is a thick paint in a good way. Applied with paint rollers. Highly recommended.

This last order was total boat epoxy primer in gray 3 to 1. We used it as the second coat of primer for the floor of an 18 foot world boat skiff that my grandson and I are building. We already used this product for both the first and second coats of the sides inside and out. It mixes easily and it rolls and brushes on smoothly. Very pleased with this and other total boat products we used on the boat. Scott Anderson

Great base coat for underwater

The only thing I can say negatively is the amount of stirring needed to mix the two parts. The base is so thick and when you add the epoxy, it takes a long time to get it mixed properly.

I couldn't be more impressed with Jamestown Distributing. Product arrived on time and in good condition. To my surprise, it also came with paint brushes, roller, roller tray, painters tape and a Tyvek painters jump suit. I guess only time will tell with how the product holds up but at this point I couldn't be any happier.

The gallon can was bent up all around, and the contents very lumpy. While there was no apparent leak-evidence on the can itself, the contents appeared to have lost some of its carrier fluids. Two facts indicated this to me. One the lumpy condition of the contents and the thickness of the product even after extended mixing with an electric mixer on a power drill. One other fact was in the amount of area this gallon of the product covered. I needed to order and wait for an additional quart of the product to finish the barrier coating of the bottom of a 23 foot O'Day sailboat. I also noticed when mixing and applying the product from the additional quart differences. The new Quart was of the normal viscosity and free of lumps.

Followed all instructions to the letter. Called for tech support. Nevertheless with every application (by small HD foam roller)(thinned as directed) it left a rough surface (very much like Rino spray-on bed liner for pickup truck bed) that had to nearly totally removed to get a semi-smooth surface. If you want a Rino bed liner finish, this is your product. Otherwise, steer clear.

Worked great.

I used this to repair a ""ding"" I put in my rudder after my son had turned the rudder while in its up position into the spinning prop on the outboard. Fortunately the damage didn't penetrate through the fiberglass, but it was fairly deep. As I worked on the repair I found that the fairing was also finding imperfections in the surface of the rudder that I had not realized were there. Next spring I may completely re-fair both sides of the rudder. It did shrink a little so I had to use more than one coat. My only wish is that you could put bottom paint right on the fairing instead of needing to put on a coat of undercoat. Thus 4 stars.

The high performance is perfect for for addressing delamination problems, if they're limited to small areas. The advantage of the slow hardener is that when injected into tight area it will seep into cracks before hardening. The bottles and pumps are made so that the correct ration of epoxy and hardener are dispensed using the same amount of pumps.

Q: What is the actual recoat time? I understand there is a fluctuation based on temperature but I'm not comfortable with the time being described some ware between a sticky thumb and 60 days. Understanding that re-sanding is not an option, would you say if the second coat happens within a day or two at 70-80 degree temperatures, sanding would be unnecessary? Please advise,

1 Answer

A: I have recoated without sanding in a similar scenario to yours without any issues. You can sand between coats with 80 grit sandpaper. The tech sheet is correct about recoat times. You have up to 60 days to recoat without sanding. The critical point comes when you paint over the primer. Some bottom paints may be applied without sanding as long as the primer is till tacky. Some water based and specialty bottom paints and virtually all topside paints will require sanding prior to application. Q: I purchased a quart of Total Protect primer, and I have two questions: 1) the application instructions talk about fiberglass, which is usually a polyester resin. I am using the primer on a wooden boat, with a fiberglass sheathing set in epoxy, not polyester. Does that make any difference to the application instructions? And, 2) the instructions printed on the quart container are tiny - are they available to download so I can print them in an easier to read size?

1 Answer

A: Total Protect can be used on polyester resin or epoxy resin. On epoxy be sure it is cured and wash with water to remove any possible amine blush, then sand with 80 grit, clean with acetone or denatured alcohol. More detailed instructions are available on our webside in the Technical Data sheet, here is the link: https://doc.jamestowndistributors.com/userportal/pdfs/TotalBoat/totalboat-totalprotect-tds-6.30.20.pdf

Q: I exceeded the pot life by a few hours, but the epoxy primer/barrier coat was still the same viscosity as when originally mixed. This might be to late to ask, but will it adhere properly?

1 Answer

A: Typically TotalProtect has not exceeded it's pot life until it becomes too thick to apply. The pot life for TotalProtect is anywhere from 2.5 hours to 10 hours depending on the temperature and the size of the batch. As long as it was well mixed at a 3:1 ratio it should harden and adhere.
