Product Details

TotalBoat Underdog is a dependable, solvent-based, single-season antifouling bottom paint that provides outstanding protection against barnacles and other antifouling pests, at a very affordable price, and in all water conditions. Ablative technology allows the surface to polish away over time, minimizing paint build-up and releasing fresh layers of biocide as the season progresses. This ablative action works most effectively on boats that are used on a regular basis. Underdog's durable finish also stands up well to scrapes from beaching and trailering.

It has excellent adhesion on fiberglass, wood, steel, iron and most existing bottom paints that are in good condition.

Sold in Gallons, in Black, Red, or Blue.

Each order includes a free roller & metal tray kit, paint suit, abrasive pad, 1 roll of painter's masking tape, & two 10" stir sticks (a $10 value!).

Very hard to beat

I've used a few different brands of antifouling paint. I've had the best results from total boats underdog. Even being a ""single season"" paint I've been able to get multiple seasons from it with minor touch ups. Going to continue using it on my boat!

Very good coating for the price

We needed to barrier coat and bottom paint our forty-year-old 36-foot trawler in one day and we chose TotalProtect two-part and this. NOTE: There was a small issue with shipping - too big of a container and the two cans weren't packed very well - wrapped in a plastic bag with some kraft paper stuff - so there was some leakage and fairly significant denting - but the leakage was minimal and I boxed the two gallons into a single bucket - no harm no foul. It's gotten very hot where we are in southwest FL, so we knew it was going to be a race once we got started. At dawn we were wiping and taping and about an hour and a half later, I boxed the two gallons of ablative and then mixed the first gallon of barrier coat. Let it sit twenty minutes, thinned it 10%, and started applying as soon as the thinner was mixed well. Ultimately, we started at the starboard bow and worked our way back, then up the port side to the port bow and then around again. We ran out of barrier coat about 2/3 of the way up the port side, so we mixed another batch and continued around for two full coats - admittedly a little thinner on the second one. The weather cooperated and the timing was perfect as we started the second coat the first was thumbprint tacky. As luck would have it, the second coat was also thumbprint tacky once we got back around to the port bow and we were able to immediately start the ablative application. I did NOT thin the ablative and it went on much thicker - but also easier. With two of us working - one cutting and one rolling, switching out roles several times, we were able to do the entire bottom in about three hours. And she looks amazing.

Good price, nice accessories

Its my first time with this paint, so we'll see how it wears. It went on well for the most part. Certain areas required a second coat once the first coat tacked up. The foam brushes that come with the paint are useless, but that was anticipated.

Busted delivery paint cans! Twice!!!

We ordered through Amazon initially. The order ended up being returned by the shipper due to badly damaged parcel. We never saw it…they deemed it undeliverable. While we are paying for our boat to be pulled out on a schedule and paying for each day we wait for paint!! So we called Total Boat and tried to expedite two cans. Could not expedite but we did order our two cans We waited 5 days for shipment to arrive…and of course the cans were smashed to the point of having difficulty opening and even stirring the contents prior to painting. It was a horrible experience and of course costly for us. We got the job done but not a great way to start our journey from USA to Mexico. Perhaps it will be a ""haha"" not so funny moment on our YouTube.

Maybe

The paint seemed fine, it went on well and dried faster than I expected. However, the paint comes in a kit that includes a roller, paint tray and masking tape. I used the masking tape included with the kit and when I removed it all the tape adhesive stayed on the project. I spent 3 hours trying to clean it off the project. No solvents got onto the tape, only the paint. In the future, if I order products that includes this tape. it will immediately go into the trash.

If you order it through Amazon, you don't get all of the extras. Very disappointed. Now i have to buy it all separately.

Q: null we were using VC17 interlux anti-foul paint, can we switched to this on top of VC17?

2 Answers

A: You would have to totally remove the VC17 before painting with underdog. JD Select can be applied over VC17 when prepped correctly.

A: Thank you for reaching out. We do not recommend this for Aluminum as they are dissimilar metals with the copper in the paint. We'd recommend Alumipaint AF

Q: null I have been using the Total Boat Underdog ablative on my hull for several years. When I apply a new coat in the spring before I launch my boat.I use a roller to apply the paint. As I'm rolling the paint on the old paint starts to flake off from the hull. What can I do to prevent this from happening again ?

1 Answer

A: It's common for bottom paint to lose adhesion as it ages or when it gets thick with multiple layers. It could be that a previous paint was incompatible or needed more sanding. If you are seeing bare gelcoat there could have been some residual wax on the substrate. If you are seeing barrier coat under the paint it could be the barrier coat cured before applying the bottom paint or it needed more sanding. 80 grit is generally the best grit sandpaper to use for bottom paint. I find the old paint is less likely to lift off if I use a roller with a thin nap.

Q: null if the bottom was painted and the boat never made it to the slip for two years......is the paint still effective in prohibiting salt water growth for a summer season??? thank you mario

2 Answers

A: I would not know the answer to that because I did not leave it out of the water for 2 years. I will say that the paint did not do well docked in the river. We had barnacle growth and was disappointed. This may not be the case where you are looking to more/dock your boat. I happen to be up river about 1 mile but very much still considered open waters, not brackish and we had growth. I am looking for another product. Tony

Q: null Building a 19ft Sharpie. Marine ply covered in xynole. Fresh water and will be trailered after every use. Will this paint work or would another be better

A: I don't see a need for bottom paint if the boat will not be left in the water. Its advantage is in preventing marine growth; just my opinion.

Q: null I just acquired a 19' wooden boat that the owner had to get the bottom wet in the spring so the wood would expand and stop leaking. I am the type of person that does not keep the boat in the water for the season. It is kept in a garage after every use. Is there a product that I can apply to the bottom of the boat that will completely seal it from water getting in? Thanks

1 Answer

A: Not really. You essentially have to strip all the paint off and add layer of fiberglass. If the boat is well caulked and you use it regularly. Swelling should not be an issue.

Q: null 1. Is this suitable for my Snipe (16 ft.) to be kept in a fresh water lake in Connecticut? There is no bottom paint on the boat now, just the gelcoat finish. 2. What is the coverage (square feet or similar) of a 1 gallon can? 3. What is the shelf life of an opened can? If I use 1/2 can this year, can I use the rest next year? Thanks. Michael Luskin

A: I have had great success with that paint. Closed properly,I have used that paint the following year. The gel coat will have to be prepared properly for success with any bottom paint. You would have to look at the van specs for coverage and it will also depend on the temperature you are applying it in. Thank You Mike
