My 8 year old son and I are restoring our 1963 Grady White Hatteras and wanted to put on a really solid coating after we stripped the hull below the waterline. I found the product easy to work with and I appreciated the high-build quality of it as well. By the way, my son's favorite shows are the boat building series with Lou Sauzedde. We recently received an order of some varnish and thinner and when he opened the box and found the extra goodies that you packed in (foam brushes, gloves, etc.) he remarked how nice it was of Lou to send us those for free! We had the pleasure of meeting Lou at the tent sale back in April and I guess he thinks that Lou runs the place. Anyway, keep up the good work, you guys are great and I hope to bring our boat to the 2019 Tent Sale for the customer boat show!

So far so good. Mixes easily, applies well, and sands easily. I'm not sure how well it wears, I'm most of the way (hopefully) through a two-year boat restore. Has not been in the water yet. Not able to speak of it's performance yet. Seems good.

Order the quart. Opened it and it was half evaporated (1/2 gone). It was a 1/2 quart of thick white paste. Also had problems with the Total Fair product not getting 100% hard and sandable. Beginning to question ""Total Boat"" products.

Good Stuff

Exactly as advertised. Even pot life, which I usually take with a large grain of salt. For those of you that had trouble mixing it, two words: mud mixer. It made short work of getting the solids off the bottom of the can and fully blended. Works great for stirring bottom paint, too.

Total Boat epoxy primer

The mooring lines were cut on my 1977 Seafarer 23 last fall and the boat ended up about 3 miles away on the rocks causing damage to the keel and rudder. This summer , I stripped all the bottom paint ( 8 layers of Pettit Unipoxy) , sanded with 80 grit paper with an orbital sander , repaired the damage using Total Boat 2 part fairing compound. ( of which I'm very impressed, easily mixed , goes on smooth and easy to sand). After washing , allowing to dry and wiping down with acetone , I mixed and rolled on 3 coats of Total Boat epoxy primer. At about 70 degrees , the port side was dry enough to overcoat by the time the starboard side was done. So I just kept going around the boat until it was done. The primer mixed well , rolled on smooth filling small imperfections. . Waited 3 hours and applied 2 coats of Total Boat Select bottom paint, again very happy with. It covered well and went a long way, only used 1/2 gal. The total paint job took about 10 hours , 2 men and a case of beer. The boat hasn't seen water yet but the select bottom paint gives me 18 months to launch being water activated. So far I'm VERY impressed with all the Total Boat products I've used and with Jamestown Distributers. Free shipping . rollers paint suit ,etc. Its a lot of work , but worth it , My old boat looks new. Thank You. Hopefully the bottom will standup to the elements after a season on the mooring next summer in Lake Champlain. I will write another review.

Mast repaint

I recently used TotalPertect Epoxy Barrier Coat and Interlux Perfection to repaint my mast. The mast was previous powder coated and areas were chipping off near base of mast. I took the recommendation from JD and used TotalPertect Epoxy Barrier Coat as a prime coat in the shop with temp set at 70F (live in Northern MN) to get right humidity level. I applied three barrier coats followed with one-week dry/cure time and then sanded with 220 final coat for a smooth finish (look good). Though, the first barrier coat came out rough in that I applied to much paint with a brush (paint look fractured) at one time. Therefore, I had to aggressively (180 grit) sand first coat to get smooth finish without fracture looking surface before applying the next two coats (less is more). I used a roll & tip method but found just using the roller (keeping a wet edge) was best for the brush left to many brush marks causing me go back over with roller. I found brush was to stiff. I went down to local box store and purchase a longer bristle brush for later topcoat use. Two days later, I applied the first top coat (perfection Snow White) at about 0900. Next day, same time, I applied the second top coat within the recoat window as indicated by instructions (6hrs to 2 days recoat without sanding). Initially, like with barrier coat I tried the roll & tip method and quit right off because I was experiencing the same brush mark/fractured look as with barrier coat. I just used roller and use brushed around cleat areas where needed followed up with roller while keeping a wet edge - work great. If I do this over again I will not use TotalPertect Epoxy Barrier Coat as a primer. I would use another two-part epoxy primer. Not because TotalPertect Epoxy Barrier Coat did not work, because it did, I found it was too thick for mast repaint where I only had small areas of bare aluminum and rest was over existing paint to warrant its use. I think tow part epoxy another primer that is not as th

Excellent Choice

I remain impressed with this product and believe it will perform well. I did mix more than necessary for my small job and would have benefited by knowing a bit more about anticipated coverage. However, the product went on well and dried perfectly. Multiple coats were easily applied using the ""thumb print"" technique that was suggested. If I am in future need of a good barrier coat this will be my choice.

I wouldn't buy this product again

This is very similar to Interlux Primkote. Both components are very thick (high viscosity) prior to mixing which makes measuring small quantities (4 oz) difficult. But once the two components are mixed it becomes much lower in viscosity making it easier to brush or roller. Dries very quickly. Difficult to brush back into after as little as 5 minutes. Instructions are confusing. Nothing is mentioned about stirring the two components before you mix them together but the smaller can (hardener) had a lot of solids at the bottom so I did mix it. Also, the instructions state the product has a 5 hour pot life but later in the instructions it states to only mix what you can use in 20 minutes...confusing? The solvents/odor/fumes are about as strong as the Interlux PrimeKote so be sure to use in a well ventilated area. Bottom line is that I much prefer the System Three epoxy primer that can be thinned with either water or alcohol and doesn't have nearly the solvents contained in the TotalBoat or Interlux products. System Three is the easiest to use, is high build, and sands easily. The only drawback is that the System Three is not available in white, only light grey.

I used this barrier coat to prime the floor of a new trailer (plywood), second coat with barrier coat and spread colored flakes and then coated with a water base clear epoxy in several layers for an outstanding finish. Very durable and will last for quite some time. I believe this system will work well on concrete floors as well.

Fantastic Product

Forget the good price for a moment - the product is fantastic. I've used the others. This stuff is every bit as good, and if you take into consideration the packaging (superior) and customer service / turnaround time at Jamestown Distributors (exceptional), no brainer for me to make this my go-to barrier coat. I've ordered paint and epoxy products from marine distributors throughout the country. To be fair, most of the time I have a good experience. But my experience with Jamestown was better than good. It was fantastic. Solid packaging, shipped immediately (within a few hours of placing my internet order), and as I've said, the product is wonderful. Good consistency, easy to mix and measure, and the color is true. I'm a fairly critical buyer of most things - I can always find room for improvement. Not on this one.

Good Quality Product Fairly Priced Paint

One major option that was omitted from the video-the paint comes in two contrasting colors for a reason. Use a different color for each succeeding coat. That will limit the chance of missing/undercoating areas. Many times it is hard to see where you have been on successive coats and the change in color will go a long way to eliminate that issue. Same works for ablative anti fouling painting. A contrasting color showing through will tell you that the paint is wearing thin and needs to be renewed.

Used for Primer Coat for bottom paint on sailboat

I stripped the bottom of my old sailboat 10 + layers, and then debated what to put on. Ended up using one coat Total Protect as the primer and two coats of Total Select Bottom Paint. Final job looks great but has not been in the water yet. The Total Protect has to be mixed from the two parts in separate cans but they supplied the labelled measuring cups and it was easy that way. The roller and tray that came with it was also perfect for the job, and I appreciated that they included them. This would have been a good as a barrier coat as well if I had wanted to do that, but that takes many more coats. Since the boat has no blisters after all these years I didn't think it needed that.

Great High Build Primer

The mixing ratio is easy but...I always seem to end up with more of one component than the other. The primer covers well and fills small details. It sands easily. It does not apply smoothly because of the viscosity of the primer, so it needs to be sanded smooth before painting. Several coats go a long way to creating a smooth subsurface for paint. The smell is intense, you will need a respirator.

Excellent epoxy primer

This is a great epoxy primer, I used it on the deck of a Bristol 40 I am restoring. It covers very well, after two coats all of the glass and fairing compound spots were covered. A third coat really evened it out. I will put down a fourth to build up the mil thickness. Not having to sand between coats is a huge help. The vapors are not nearly as bad as Interlux epoxy prime coat.

tight timeline

The product has a tight timeline for the bottom paint. There is a finger print test, come away with paint you are too early, leave a print you are on time, no print too late reapply barrier coat. For a small boat I imagine that's not an issue but when painting a 27ft boat with 10' beam, you're time is nearly up. One option is to paint half the boat with barrier wait, then apply the bottom paint at the coorect cure time. Repeat the process for the other half of the boat, or better yet have a painting party with some friends and get it done all at once.

I used TotalProtect Epoxy Primer to barrier coat my recently repaired keel. I ended up stripping all bottom paint off, repairing the area and then barrier coated the entire keel. Area was prepared and the barrier coat was applied as directed. I used a roller for the larger areas with a brush for the details. Easy to apply, dried quickly, and results were as expected. I was very happy with this product. I purchased ""Plastic Paint Pails"" at the time of buying the barrier coat which made mixing 3 to 1 extremely easy.

Q: What is the actual recoat time? I understand there is a fluctuation based on temperature but I'm not comfortable with the time being described some ware between a sticky thumb and 60 days. Understanding that re-sanding is not an option, would you say if the second coat happens within a day or two at 70-80 degree temperatures, sanding would be unnecessary? Please advise,

1 Answer

A: I have recoated without sanding in a similar scenario to yours without any issues. You can sand between coats with 80 grit sandpaper. The tech sheet is correct about recoat times. You have up to 60 days to recoat without sanding. The critical point comes when you paint over the primer. Some bottom paints may be applied without sanding as long as the primer is till tacky. Some water based and specialty bottom paints and virtually all topside paints will require sanding prior to application. Q: I purchased a quart of Total Protect primer, and I have two questions: 1) the application instructions talk about fiberglass, which is usually a polyester resin. I am using the primer on a wooden boat, with a fiberglass sheathing set in epoxy, not polyester. Does that make any difference to the application instructions? And, 2) the instructions printed on the quart container are tiny - are they available to download so I can print them in an easier to read size?

1 Answer

A: Total Protect can be used on polyester resin or epoxy resin. On epoxy be sure it is cured and wash with water to remove any possible amine blush, then sand with 80 grit, clean with acetone or denatured alcohol. Q: I exceeded the pot life by a few hours, but the epoxy primer/barrier coat was still the same viscosity as when originally mixed. This might be to late to ask, but will it adhere properly?

1 Answer

A: Typically TotalProtect has not exceeded it's pot life until it becomes too thick to apply. The pot life for TotalProtect is anywhere from 2.5 hours to 10 hours depending on the temperature and the size of the batch. As long as it was well mixed at a 3:1 ratio it should harden and adhere.
