VARNISH APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

Preparation

BARE WOOD: Sand with 80 grade (grit) paper. Wipe with Brushing Liquid 333. Apply sealer coat of Schooner reduced 10% with Brushing Liquid 333. PLYWOOD: Apply Inter-Prime Wood Sealer Clear 1026.

PREVIOUSLY VARNISHED WOOD: In Good Condition Sand surface with 120-150 grade (grit) paper and remove all dust. In Poor Condition If varnish is badly checked or peeling, remove finish to bare wood with Interstrip Semi-Paste 299E. Follow directions for varnishing bare wood.

Method Pour the amount you expect to use in a separate container. Strain it through a paint strainer to ensure there is no contamination. Apply at least 5-6 coats on bare wood and a minimum of 3 coats on previously varnished surfaces until a satisfactory finish is obtained. Sand between coats using 220-320 grade (grit) paper. Remove sanding residue with a rag dampened with Brushing Liquid 333.

Hints Mixing Do not shake. Stir gently.

Thinner Brush - Brushing Liquid 333. Spray - Special Thinner 216.

Cleaner Bare Wood - Brushing Liquid 333.

Ventilation and Humidity Control It is best to paint on warm, dry mornings. Cold weather retards the drying and humidity can spoil the gloss. Calm, cool, low humidity days are ideal.

Airless Spray Pressure: 170 bar/2500 psi. Tip Size: 0.33-0.41 mm/13-16 thou.

Conventional Spray Pressure Pot: Pressure: 3.44-4.47 bar/50-65 psi (gun pressure); 8-10 psi (pot pressure). Tip Size: 0.89-1.4 mm/35-50 thou. Siphon Cup: Pressure: 3.44-4.47 bar/50-65 psi - gun pressure. Tip Size: 1.5-1.8 mm/60-70 thou.

Brush Always use a clean brush that is kept specifically for varnishing. Clean brushes before use.

Roller If rolling, use a thin nap roller and "tip-off" with a clean natural bristle brush.

Other Spray pressures listed are recommendations only. The applicator may use any settings which yield the best results for the individual spraying technique and current weather conditions. To enhance appearance of the bare wood and fill porous open grain, apply Interstain according to label directions and allow to dry overnight.

Some Important Points Never leave bare wood exposed for long periods of time as it will absorb moisture. Avoid using Schooner straight from the can as this will cause it to age prematurely and may introduce contamination to the can. Failure to follow proper dry times carefully will cause improper drying, wrinkling and loss of adhesion. Avoid painting in direct sunlight. Product temperature should be minimum 10 deg C/50 deg F and maximum 29 deg C/85 deg F. Ambient temperature should be minimum 10 deg C/50 deg F and maximum 35 deg C/95 deg F. Substrate temperature should be minimum 10 deg C/50 deg F and maximum 29 deg C/85 deg F.

Compatibility/Substrates Apply to clean, dry, properly prepared surfaces only. Schooner can be applied over any varnish as long as it is adhered well and has been cleaned and sanded. Do not apply two part varnishes over Schooner.

Continues fantastic results

Having owned over twenty boats over the course of my life , varnish became a part of it too. Went to Cetol for five years on my 42 with good results but not the beautiful shiny deep luster of Schooner varnish. Couldn't be happier. Just finished a 500 year old redwood tree and outdoor patio furniture with it. Outstanding.

Deceptive practice

I bought 2 cans of the schooner gold varnish. If you enlarge the image of the can in your catalogue, it clearly says it is a quart of varnish. Imagine my dismay when 2 pints showed up at my door! Along with a squatty can of brushing liquid! You need to rectify this deceptive practice so people get what they expect. Very disappointing.

Questions

Q: I've been using Schooner Gold on my Whaler woodwork for years. Have read the numerous negative reviews on the Gold. If I switch to the standard Schooner, would the color be the same as the Gold version? PS: spray application.

1 Answer

A: I've used both on wooden sea kayaks, over epoxied fiberglass.  The Gold took longer to dry and didn't self level nearly as well as the regular Schooner.  Lately I've been putting 6 or 8 coats of Halcyon, water based, fast drying varnish down to build up a base, and then 2 or 3 coats of Schooner for its self leveling and glassy finish.  Schooner AND  Halcyon will give you the classic amber color of the Gold.

A: Yes you could. It might not be quite as durable as some other products but it would definitely show off the natural wood grain. Get Outlook for iOS< https://aka.ms/o0ukef>

Q: Can I thin the very last coat so as to get no bubbles. 5% ?

A: Hi, I used this varnish for a bare/new wood ceiling for my outside porch about 3 years ago. Still looks beautiful like the day it was applied. I used the kit you can get from Jamestown Dist., here is the description: Go for Two! Our new JD Interlux Schooner Kit (SCHOONERKIT) includes (2) Quart cans of varnish, (2) foam brushes, (2) paint strainers, (2) stir sticks, and (2) plastic paint pails. This is a great value. You save on the varnish and receive brushes, strainers, and pails for free! https://www.jamestowndistributors.com/userportal/show_product.do?pid=107&familyName=Interlux+Schooner+Varnish# I basically followed the instructions on the can. I also ordered the website recommended thiner: Interlux 216 Special Thinner Interlux 216 Special Thinner is a fast evaporating solvent which when added to specified paint coatings improves drying in cold climates, and facilitates spray application. 216 Thinner is also recommended for removing sanding residue from hull bottoms, wiping down bare aluminum clean, and for the general clean-up of paint equipment. Available in Pint, Quart, and Gallon sizes. https://www.jamestowndistributors.com/userportal/show_product.do?pid=130 I also used a badger brush to apply, which worked really well for the ceiling I was doing – you can purchase this from Jamestown Dist.: Redtree Badger Hair Brushes https://www.jamestowndistributors.com/userportal/show_product.do?pid=2113&familyName=Redtree+Badger+Hair+Brushes Jamestown Dist. Has an enormous amount of info regarding using this varnish – you should look there for the best info. Regarding your question about bubbles, I did not have any bubbles, but I cannot recall if I thinned the coats as I went or started with a thinned coat initially and added less thinner for each successive coat as I went, but I am sure I read what to do from the can or from the website and followed those instructions. It sounds like you application is a boat so I have no special advice for you. You will need to do some research. Hope this helps somebody. BTW, all of the items in the SCHOONERKIT  turned out to be essential, as well as the badger brush and thinner. Good luck!

Q: Can I thin the last coat by 5% so to get no bubbles? Or should I use it full strength? Is ther a different dilution percent

2 Answers

A: You can thin the first coat or two, but I wouldn't thin the last coats. If you shake and not stir the varnish in the can, you can end up with bubbles, but usually you can tip off the varnish after it is applied to remove those. If the temp. of your substrate is changing while you are applying the first coat of varnish, it can 'outgas' into the wet varnish causing bubbles: varnish and wood substrate should be at the same temp. Cheers.

Q: For years my father used to prime bare wood that was to be used outdoors with marine spar varnish cut 50% with turpentine. The theory was the thin varnish would penetrate the bare wood and seal it very well. He would then apply two finish coats of uncut marine spar varnish. Please comment on whether you think this is a good approach or if there is a better primer sealer. My current thought is to prime as above and use a high quality exterior paint top coat. Thanks.

4 Answers

A: You can thin the varnish, I'm not sure that I would blindly recommend turpentine without checking for compatibility, but thinning the first 2-3 coats helps seal the outer grain and give the varnish a foundation. Then 3-6 coats of unthinned or barely thinned varnish (sometimes you need 2-5% thinner for a little flow and workability). There are products such as Interlux 2016, Pettit 2018, and TB Wood Sealer that are pre-thinned varnishes for the first 2-3 coats, that are designed for quick dry and a hard cure as a strong foundation, and no thinning is required for those products.
